I am not talking about a blade that when struck purely feels like butter.  But something more along the lines of AP2 type of club with some forgiveness.

Thinking of buying a single 6 or 7 iron in a couple options off eBay and playing with them at the range to help me decide which set to go with.

I am getting much better as of late and ready to dump the AP1 irons, but at same time I don't want to completely give up on help from the club just for the ego. I have had AP1 irons now 2 sets in a row and before that was another cast set... wanting that forged buttery feel everyone always talks about.

Right now, I am kinda leaning towards the AP2... but looking for other suggestions.

along this same note.... I have never hit a CB, but have always heard about how amazing the 716 CB irons are.... but my question is... how much different are they from the AP2 in terms of forgiveness?  In my mind, they are still a cavity back, and not a blade, so they should be similar. But then again, Jordan Spieth plays AP2 and not CB... so that must tell me something too haha.

CBs will be less forgiving than the AP2s. CBs will probably have a better "feel" but subjectivity governs that.

Seems like you prefer Titleist?

I dont have to go Titleist, it is just what I am used to. I do like their brand. But I am open to anything.  I also like Mizuno quite alot. They have a reputation of making great clubs with great feel as well.  Those are probably my 2 favorite iron brands, but like I said, I am open to suggestions.

I would hit the AP2s, maybe the Mizuno MP18SC or even the JPX900 Tour, and something from the TM P700 line (probably the P790 but don't rule out the P770). There are so many great clubs right now - the one that's most forgiving is for sure the one you feel most confident swinging.

Agree with Zurb. CBs over 18 holes will  be more demanding than AP2s.

Play a combo set.  Use the forgiveness and ease of launch of the AP1's in the longer irons, and enjoy the forged feel of the AP2's in the shorter irons.  That will cost you less $$$ as well, since you will only be purchasing half a set of the AP2's.
On Sundays, I used to play hickory

Srixon Z565's are hard to beat.

A friend of mine uses the AP2's and although I prefer the Srixons look and they are mine, I'd also say they felt much better.

I would try either of the last 2 JPX Forged irons. I would say though that the AP2 is quite a forgiving club in its own right.

Call me biased but the 845s would fit the bill for you.  Excellent feel, more forgiving than any AP2 variant and dirt cheap too!  The drawback in those clubs are the very conservative lofts (PW is 48 Deg.) and the offset.  If you can handle that then give them a whirl.

Easy choice then.  All you have to do is pick up AP2's in 7-iron to PW.  Maybe the 6-iron.

That way you can try the more unforgiving forged club and see how it works for your game.

+1 to this.
Just hit some AP2 demo clubs in the shorter irons at the range.
If you like them.  Just buy a lightly used set of 7-PW in the 714-716 AP2.

You would save money and have a perfectly blended set.

------- but, if you want that Forged feel.......

I have hit the 716 CB, and AP2s back to back.

In terms of feel, it's no comparison, the CB wins in that department.  More muted, solid sound.  AP2s seemed a bit more clicky.

what about my 716 AP1 in the 5/6 irons and the 716 CB in 7 - PW?  Guess the main thing would be the lofts and distance gap in the 2 sets

Okay, curiosity got the best of me so I went up to the local golf store on my lunch and asked to hit the 718 CB with stiff shaft.  I also hit the Mizuno MP18 SC in stiff.  I hit the MP18 in a 6 iron and then the CB in a 7 iron (all they had).  I will say they both looked alot better at address than my AP1 by far. And when hit in the middle, they both felt great.  but no lie, the CB was noticeably better feeling than the MP18.  When i struck the CB good, it almost felt like I didnt even hit a ball it was so smooth. and this was hitting crappy Maxfli balls... I couldnt imagine what hitting a chrome soft or prov1 would be like.

this was my first time to ever hit a CB but it was darn near love at first sight.  I have always liked them by the looks, but now I like them by the feel as well.  Of course, before I drop that kind of money, i would like to do some more testing and hitting. I took a quick photo of the launch monitor numbers. I wasnt hitting them perfect, but i was hitting pretty decent.  They are a good 10+ yards shorter than my AP1 but noticeably more accurate, which i would take all day long.  even the "bad" ones didnt feel awful like I was expecting them to.

Here's a vote for the Wilson Staff V6's. Excellent feel. I wouldn't call it "buttery" (nothing compares to Mizuno) but they are soft and satisfying when struck well. When not struck so well these are about (+/-) as forgiving as any forged cavity back I've hit. Overall, you would be hard pressed to find a better looking club. They don't get much pub but they are every bit the club the CB is, the 770, etcetera.

If looking at Mizuno I would disagree with those who said 18 SC's or 900 Tours. Neither of those clubs are going to offer all that much in terms of forgiveness. I think the 900 Forged would be a much better bet.
