...and I played the best 4 consecutive rounds of golf in my life.

I was pretty upset when I got to the range for round 1 of 4 of our annual MB golf tournament and found my driver had been broken on the flight down.  I tried to get it fixed but none of the pro shops at the courses we played could fix it.  I considered a quick trip to a local golf store to buy a new one but it was unlikely they would have a lefty JPX 900 driver sitting on the rack so I just resigned myself to playing without it.

I considered teeing off with my 3W but that introduces some uncertainty with only about a 20 yard gain over my 3 hybrid so I decided to play the 3 hybrid off the tee in place of my driver.  Fortunately we were not playing from the tips so the distance loss between my driver and 3 hybrid wasn't to penal.

We were playing match play and what I discovered is that teeing off with the hybrid gave me a number of advantages.
  • I hit over 90% of my drives into the fairway which placed a lot of pressure on my opponents who were not very consistent with their driver and hit a number of tee shots OB, into thick rough and into the woods.
  • I was usually hitting first on the 2nd shot which is the strongest part of my game and it allowed me to make up for any distance loss off the tee and keep pressure on my opponents.  They often over swung on their 2nd shot to match my distance and ended up making bad shots.
The other 11 guys were 10 - 24 handicaps (I'm a 16) so obviously this wouldn't have worked out as well for me if they were all single digit or if we were playing from the tips but it did give me insight to a different way to play golf that I wouldn't have tried had my driver not been broken.  On my home course I'd miss the 40 - 50 yard advantage my driver offers (when hit well) over my 3 hybrid but I'm thinking tomorrow I may just leave the driver in the bag and see how my round goes.

What I found interesting is that not one opponent decided to club down off the tee to ensure they kept their ball in the fairway despite it being obvious that it was a major advantage for me over them to have a good lie on my 2nd shot.  I wondered if the roles were reversed if I'd have the discipline to club down or if I'd just keep gripping and ripping my driver.

So, what new driver will the airline be buying for you?

None, I placed a claim but since I didn't notice the damage until the next day they are pushing back.  I had a spare shaft for it at home, so it's ready for play.

That sucks. Sorry that happened to you.

Depending on what Credit Card you used to pay for the airline ticket, they may offer to pay for a new Driver for you.

How did you pack it?

I always say in travel threads that hard shell cases, while cumbersome, are the way to go. I'm convinced airlines purposely try to destroy golf clubs. My datrek case looked like someone had attacked it with a machete after 2-3 trips

It's hard to say given I don't know if I would have hit driver well or not but given I can sometimes be inconsistent with driver it definitely reduced the number of penalty strokes I usually have in a round.

Curious as to what issues you would have had with the 3W over the hybrid?  It still has significant loft over the driver.

Courses we player had narrow fairways with a lot of OB and water, so the added distance along with greater potential to pull or slice my 3w over my 3h could have likely resulted in penalty strokes with a minimal increase in average distance.

Sorry to hear about that. I have read that some people take their driver heads off of their shafts and carry the head in their luggage or place the detached club head in their golf bag.

This in my luggage for all woods/hybrids heads that detach. I also get around it by shipping my clubs via USPS a couple days before down to FL. Might or might not cost a bit more who knows, but it's a hell of alot less stress for me at the airports.

Glad that it worked out for you OP. Seems like you were playing courses where being forced to the hybrid actually worked out in your favor. A big, open and really long course it probably would have been a detriment.

You may hear soon though that studies show that you really were disadvanting yourself by giving up distance.

Most airlines (Delta and Southwest) will not cover damage to golf clubs unless they are in a hard shell case. Glad you had an extra shaft!

Ditto, my driver and fairways are headless before the airline touches my bag. I also pack my irons and putter upside down in my travel bag. Makes it less top-heavy for rolling/standing, keeps the clubs from getting bent or dinged, and the baggage handler only sees the grips if they open my bag.

Would you have played driver on most of these holes, had it not been broken?  Or was this typical course management decision making for you?

Thats awful! A club that works well with you can often mean more than the $$$. Try using a stiff arm next time and wrap your clubs with towels. Also, NEVER leave the airport without checking all of your clubs. They can have a harder time denying fault when you are still at the airport.

I had it in a BagBoy T2000 travel case with a stiff arm and towels wrapped around the clubs in an Ogio Silencer golf bag.  They must have dropped it or slammed it from the side with significant force to snap the shaft.

Those luggage handlers are gorillas, they'll trash anything. When I was looking at a travelling case for my clubs, I pondered whether to go with a soft or hard case and after doing my research, the SKB Deluxe case was it. I heard too many horrid stories about drivers/fairways necks getting snapped, damaged in the softcases.

With the SKB, I have not had any issues with its protections - at the cost of the case itself.

Here is the latest example of the bruising those gorillas can do...yes, the whole wheel assembly went missing after it was collected at the terminal...

Posted Image

Even then the SKB remained wheelable and I had no problems moving the thing around LAX airport.

Told ya the handlers were gorillas. Before this, I had another incident where I had a luggage tag attached to the top handle. The whole handle and tag was ripped off - pooooof, just gone....go figure how they did that?!?!

Now the beauty about SKB is their life time warranty so I drove down to Orange, CA, showed the guy they even checked that the case was penetrated and completely replace the entire case as versus giving me an wheel assembly. No questions asked. Before that I was communicating with them via their customer service - absolutely fantastic.

Now I am totally FOR SKB cases, made here in California and with awesome support. They are HUGE, they make a ton of other hard cases for all sorts of stuff. I was amazed by the size of the place.

Most airlines (Delta and Southwest) will not cover damage to golf clubs unless they are in a hard shell case. Glad you had an extra shaft!

I flew SouthWest when this happened, I should have put in a claim but I was too tired. In any event, SKB has this covered for its case, I doubt any damage to the clubs itself inside the hard case...or I have never heard of any damage to the club inside a SKB.
