I play a course that has a 135 slope. I just got my SCGA card and am starting to enter my scores, but I don't have enough entered yet to have an index. I'm wondering if my best score is 82, worst 95, and am normally between 85-87 whaddya think my handicap will be? I'm asking because I want to play my Dad this weekend and he said he'll give me strokes based on what my handicap is(he's a 6), but I don't know yet(he said I could estimate it). BTW last 11 rounds at same course are 95,91,88,88,84,82,86,90,84,85,87...... Also, say my index is 12? and the course handicap for this index is 13 does that mean I should be 13 over par to be shooting at my handicap level? and to improve my index I need to shoot under 13 over par? and vice versa if I keep shooting over 13 over? I've heard a couple guys state before they played "2 strokes or 4 below their handicap" is this what they were talking about?
All confusing to me. I only care about my total scores and if they're getting lower or not. But I guess if I'm going to start playing some competitive outings I should get some info first. Thank you for your help.

Hello dorkwad!
You need the course rating as well as the slope to calculate your handicap. Below is a link that will explain the calculation and also includes a calculator so you can work your own hcp out.
http://golf.about.co...wcalculated.htm
Based on the 11 scores you gave and ASSUMING a course rating of 72.5 your index would be 11.8. Using the best 4 scores (which is what would be used if you handed in those 11 eleven cards) your index would be 9.0, but this kind of punishes you early on before you hcp settles down after 20 rounds.
11.8 corresponds to a score of 86-87 and an index of 9.0 corresponds to a score of 83. I reckon it would be fair to take the average of these and say an 85 would be playing to your hcp.
Oh, and you get cut if your differential from a rouind is less than (1/0.96)*(your index).
But on the other hand it ain't the open championship - just ask for ten strokes!
