So today we played a 4 club challenge. I chose a hybrid, 5 iron, 8 iron and 56. I putted with my wedge. Anyways, on one par four I ended up in the middle of the fairway 135 out. A 56 wouldn't get there, an 8 iron would hit the tree and a punch 5 iron wouldn't work because there was a valley in front of the Green.  I said maybe I could lay my 8 open way open open and flop it over the tree. I needed to knock 25 yards off the stock distance.   One of my partners said they wanted to see me try.  I figured I was going 50 yards right. Anyways this was the results.

There's a new shot to practise with.  I'd love to here other crazy shots that worked out for people.

All of my stories, shots and stories related to shots are best described as rational at best.   I have nothing to offer forth at this point.

First time for me today.  Par 3 I hit a nice iron right on line coming up just short and expect a kick on the green and hopefully a good look at a birdie....

Damn if it doesn't hit the sprinkler head a foot off the green and bound over the back.

As expected ruined a mint ProV1!!!!!

fair question .  It's a short par 4 with a big mature maple on the right side of the fairway. It blocks out a little more than half the fairway.  Normally you play short and left side,  short enough to go over or try to drive over the tree.

I did try a couple putts with my hybrid and 8 iron.  I found the shorter club put my eyes in a better position.

Here's another one.  My wife had only been playing a couple years.  She had a creek that was 110 and 120 to carry.  She pulled her hybrid which she hits 130 if hit perfect but with roll.  I tried to get her to lay up as there was no way she'd get over.  The couple we were playing with said "come on Scott let her try".  She hit a screaming worm burner that didn"t have a prayer.  Right before it goes swimming it hit a turtle and bounced over.

I guess I was wrong.

A fellow golfer's drive ended up in a row of trees on the right side of the fairway of a par 4. He was having one of those days where everything was going wrong. so of course, he decided to hit a punch up the alley, between the trees, instead of punching out side ways into the fairway. His shot was straight but was too high, hit a limb, and came arcing straight back to him. This is the last straw for him, he rears back and takes a baseball swing at the ball, makes perfect contact just above the hosel and snaps the head off his seven Iron. Glad this happened on 16 I was too busy laughing to hit any decent shots the rest of the round.

About a month ago I was playing 9 with a guy I’ve known my whole life. He’s just bought some new irons that are replacing the other set he’s used for legitimately 20 years and testing them out before a golf trip. On the 5th hole he pulls his drive left of the trees and has about 120 in and asks me if he thinks he can hit his new 9 iron over the tree in front of him and I confirm that I think he can. He pulls back and fires a bladed line drive 9 iron right into the center of the trunk and the ball flies back right at him at 100mph and he sticks his hand out and bare hand catches it on a fly. We were on the ground crying we were laughing so hard.

craziest shot I ever hit was in a college tourney in 2013. I was playing a par 5 that was a slight dog leg right. I managed to push my driver right off the tee and had some tree trouble. My only real option was to hit a punch cut start left over the bunkers down the left rough and try to cut it around. I decided to pull a 3 wood and had a downhill lie but good lie. I played it back in my stance and kept it low enough to avoid the trees. Hit the shot exactly how I envisioned and was able to wind up pin high on the left fringe. Definitely felt like I had a tiger moment. Its always cool to be able to hit shots the way we plan them to turn out! Definitely one of my best recovery shots.

Hahah sounds like one time when me and my brother were playing with my dad! He had pulled his tee shot left and had tree trouble. We were standing fairly close to him because we helped locate his ball. He proceeds to hit a punch shot at a tree and it comes right back at him and he proceeds to catch it. Much like you and your friend we all laughed for at least the next three holes over it and still bring it up to this day! great stuff

Playing with friends, we’re on a slight dogleg left and my bud hit a low rope hook into the shrubs at the curve. Apparently, there was a stray dog in the bushes and he nailed it. The dog comes screaming out of the bushes “AAAAAAROOOOOOOO ARRRRROOOOOOOOOO ARRRRROOOOOOOOOOOOOO” and hauls a** down the fairway towards the green. I haven’t laughed that hard on a golf course since I caught a dude taking a crap in a tree line at 8am.

A bag of left-handed junk

The course where I grew up would have made a great subject for a screenplay, kind of like Caddyshack, with all the things that I saw there growing up.

Friend of mine, who played HS golf about 3 years behind me, was playing there one day, teeing off on #1. I was standing in the pro shop door watching him as he hit the driver on the absolute back of the neck of the club, directly between his legs. It had so much top spin that it rolled across the putting green, up the hill towards the pro shop, hit the asphalt path and skipped up and right in the door of the shop!

Guess you had to be there to understand the total hilariousness of the shot. I think that I would have quit.

He called an unplayable lie (see another recent thread) and hit 3 from the tee.

Personally, I would have tried to play it from the shop. (another thread)

OP, two serious questions for you....

First is the hole a driveable par 4? How short I guess applies? Got to love those risk-reward holes!

Second question - how did you repair that mess you made? Part of the turf is in the hole with your ball! Must have had to either take a bunch of time getting it back into shape or perhaps even call the pro shop and have them recut the hole.

As for my own personal story....
Alternate shot shootout and there was a HUGE crowd watching. I hit the drive - was shaking like a leaf and saying to myself "Please don't shank this and kill someone..."
So I hit a great drive, slightly offline but in play. My pard hits the approach shot short and I have a chip shot out of some thick rough about 20 yards. All I want to do is get it on the green and within 5 feet or so. One team is already facing a probably double so our odds are surviving are really good even if we make a bogey. I hit the chip right to my landing spot, it released, and rolled right in. I ran around the green high fiving everyone watching as they were cheering and screaming - was the coolest and most memorable shot I have ever made.
Let's not talk about how we got eliminated two holes later.....painful.

I’ve played two Dan Maples courses that each featured a huge willow leaf oak blocking the green on one hole.

Elmwood golf club, Pueblo, CO. The namesake elm dominates the dogleg smack in the middle of the fairway of the par four tenth. Already a long hole, this aged deciduous monolith leaves you three options, play left of the tree, cutting the dogleg and shortening the hole. You have a sliver of fairway to work with, overhanging branches require spot on ball flight, a miss right is stymied by the elm, left is literally in traffic. Two, lay up. This will leave you roughly 250 yards for your second shot on a par four, and you still have to get over treebeard. Three, hit a standard WRX tee shot, 325 yards and just right of the tree. This will leave you a perfect shot to the green with about 170 to the middle. Miss left and you're 20 feet away from a 60 ft tree that in order to get around you'd have to give physics the day off. Miss Right, see option two. I have seen one birdie on this hole, ever. Par less than ten times.

Sometimes it's all about the trees in the fairway

Well I saw a guy hit a tee shot about 3 feet backwards without hitting any trees paths walls or objects of any kind. He hit down on the driver so much it went into the ground and spun backwards.

When I was a neophyte to the sport, I was on a hole that was bordered by railroad tracks that went the entire length of the hole.

A train was coming down the tracks, I sliced my tee shot, it bounced off a freight car and into the fairway. The engineer yelled out to me, "I will be back same time tomorrow!"

I was out of town this weekend with the family and managed to play 18 on Saturday. Paired up with a nice fellow on #1 and away we went. Play backed up and another single paired up with us on #11. Both good players and really fun to play with. We get to # 13, a par 4,  and Morgan hits a drive in the right rough and is blocked out by trees 150 out. He opts to go low and try to run the ball onto the green. He keeps it low and his ball disappears in a valley and reappears rolling onto the green and is headed towards the pin. It looks like it either ran off the back or in the hole. We get up there and it is in the hole! We all go crazy when Morgan says that is his first eagle! What a cool way to make your first eagle! I was almost as pumped as Morgan was!

In my club championship a couple years ago, the pin on a par 3 was tucked on the right edge of the green. I hit a draw that landed perfectly pin high, 8 feet to the right in the fringe.... directly on a sprinkler head. So instead of a bounce and backspin towards the hole (was only hitting a wedge), it kicked forward twenty yards, down a hill, and rolled along a maintenance path through the woods that lead to another hole. I ended up with a double bogey and could have easily done worse.

This is my favorite hole on the course.  The tree is about 240 out so you need a carry of about 270 to get over the tree and the valley.  A perfect drive of about 300 will roll up to the front of the green.

The smart play is a simple 4 iron that will roll down to the bottom of the valley where you'll have about 90 yards in but not be able to see the pin or green.  I agree about the risk reward.  If the tree ever dies, it's ruin the hole.  As for the damage, I had to pick so of the sand out of the cup and place it back in.  There were only a couple other groups still on the course and the pins were being moved in the morning. The hole is easier for cutters of the ball.

Here's a pic.  The line line is correct but the shot was taken from much closer to the tree.

Playing with one of my usual partners, quarter a point, automatic presses, all the garbage and the snake bet too. We sometimes have to go A second scorecard

Hole 12, 5 skins up for grabs.
It’s a short dogleg right, not really driveable for short hitters due to trees.
The green is an upside down bowl, severely tilted back to front, and the greens on this course are fast.
A friend of mine drove it above the hole with a 3W and ended up with a 12 during the club championship when greens were rolling 11plus I’d guess.

I lay up with hybrid to the corner, pull the wedge left to the wrong side of bunker, pin is short sided on my side. Downhill lie to boot.

Villain is below pin in 2, the correct spot if you’re not on the green.
Open the 60 up an hit it 20 ft above pin, landed on the fringe. It pops on the green, turns dead right and rolls for like 5 seconds before it finds the bottom of the cup for birdie. He was not amused.

I made a 120 foot putt at Pacific Dunes. For triple bogey.

Maybe not the craziest but a buddy hits a 7 iron on a par 3 and pushes it right. It was pretty far right and hits the tree square bounces 30 ft left. Hits a rock in the creek and bounces over the green. On the fly it hits a 2nd tree this time on the left of the green and kicks right to about 7 ft. Jerk made the put and still complained about how unlucky he gets for the rest of the day.

For me it was a drive that I pulled left. The cart path was the kind that have the rounded curve not a 90* angle. Hit the curve perfectly and kicked about 60 yards in the air right. Ended up dead center of the fairway any like 80 yards out. I proceeded to chunk the crud out of my Wedge.

Par 5 #2 at Red Wing Lake in Virginia Beach.  I'm playing with my girlfriend.  We both hit good drives, hers a draw around the dogleg, mine a squeeze fade over the corner.  She has 220 to the front, lays up to wedge distance.  I have 210, decide to try a cut 5 wood into the wind.  My shot balloons and gets pushed right toward the water.  I'm looking for my second when she finds it about an inch into the hazard 40 yards short of he green.  The ball is half submerged along a steep bank standing about ten inches proud of the the water surface.  I lay the 52 wide open and blast into the bank as hard as I can.  Ball gets up and lands about a yard short of the front of the green. I need to clean off my sunglasses I get up and down for par, my girlfriend  has a comfortable two putt for par.

This is a great game.
