Mods- I know this may not be tour talk but it IS a national championship being hosted by the USGA.

Guys- I have my second round on Monday in Atlanta. I will be playing Atlanta National and tee off at 7:45am.  I had a caddy arranged by the club and communicated with the guy for a week. He even came out and mapped the greens at the main course ( Capital City Club-Crabapple course) last Friday.  I got to town after having talked with him and He never showed up for either practice round and I didn't have a caddy.  The club scrambled and found me a kid for the first round and he did great but with Hurricane Nate turning this way they took the steps of moving round two from Sunday ( today October 8th) to Monday. Is there ANYONE that may know Atlanta National or at lease lives in the area and knows bent grass greens. Message me and we can talk financials. Really appreciate it guys. Oh, this is the USGA Mid Am championship and we are in the stroke play portion.  It's not required that you are able to continue on to the match play portion but that would be helpful.

Thanks guys

Kirk

Hey guys thanks!!! I got someone.  He is professional caddy from the area and knows this course backwards and forwards. He was a member for 25 years there.

My caddy situation has been somewhat comical and worrisome to say the least.  I called the club and said I will need a caddy for the entire tournament. They said no problem and assigned me to a guy ( he will remain nameless).  They gave me his cell number and I reached out to him and we texted for 4 days about the event and got to know one another.  I messaged him when I landed on Thursday and said Hey I am headed to the course. he didn't respond.  I got to the course and registered. texted him that I was heading to hit balls. He didn't respond. I texted him and said hey I'm headed to the 10th tee to start my practice round. he didn't respond.  I never looked at my phone the whole practice round. Got done and had no texts from him.  At this point I was starting to get worried something had happened to him and he was hurt or sick.  I called the club and they said they would try to reach out to him and they have been unable to make contact with him either.  To this moment I have still not made contact with him and am really worried something happened.  Even if his schedule changed I never got the feeling he wouldn't reach out to me and say "Hey man I hate to do this but I can't make it, you will need to find another caddy".  He is a REALLY nice guy (short of him being a Notre Dame fan ;-) ) and he even texted me a little over a week ago to say Hey i'm headed out to play the course to get familiar with it. I said oh man can you start mapping the greens? and he said I'm way ahead of you as I brought a small notebook to do just that. Anyway, I sincerely hope he is ok and nothing bad has happened to him.  this is just a golf tournament and finding someone else, while may be inconvenient, is not going to be the end of the world.  The club was able to get me a young kid for yesterday at the Crabapple course who did a good job but since they moved todays round to Monday he couldn't caddy because he has school, Anyway, Thanks to anyone and everyone that reached out via text or messages but I am set for tomorrow on my quest to win a National Championship, now if anyone can control the weather for the next day or so Thaaaaaat would be great...

Thanks! I have been an alternate for the US Am and Us Mid Am too many times to count and this year I finally broke thru! Unbelievable experience to say the least.  They treat it like a PGA tour event in every way shape and form.  Badges with our names engraved that we have to wear, parking for players only by the clubhouse, everywhere is roped off (except the holes) and players and caddies are the only ones inside the ropes. Walking scorers with every group, Igloo full of bottled water on every hole and the famous Wooden USGA hole signs on each hole, couple different types of range balls to warm up with, caddy bibs with your name on the back, etc.  I've played in some really big tournaments before with some of the same amenities as this but not all of them combined.  For as much crap that the USGA gets about how they govern the game and make decisions they sure as hell know HOW to put a tourney on.  Really makes you want to qualify for more :-).  The main course Capital City Club - Crabapple course is PHENOMENAL and is in tour quality shape. the cohost course is great but not quite on the same level as the main course.  It's really hard to try and capture all the stuff you get to be a part of and how they treat you but I will for sure always keep in mind how I was treated from the moment I got to the gate and the tourney director was there to greet you and congratulate you for making it to how the volunteers go out of their way to do stuff the next time I am griping about the USGA.

Wow, having worked as a part-time club caddie for 24 years, I know there are some shady characters out there, but this is one of the strangest stories I've come across.  I don't wish the guy you were paired up with any ill fortune, but I almost hope he got sick and just hasn't been able to respond to you.  Otherwise, he's gotta be one of the biggest d-bags in the history of caddying, and that's saying a lot.

I've got two buddies playing in the Mid-Am, and they're saying the same things about the USGA and the tournament set-up, it's an experience they're never going to forget.  Play well and good luck!

I needed a par on my last hole of the qualifier to get in this year and made bogey, makes me sick to think about it. Went to a playoff and three holes later got beat by a birdie.

Hey guys thanks for all the encouragement and believe me I am as sportsmanlike as many others and wish all players good fortune as good energy out is good energy in but I really hope a Mutha$ucking rainstorm and wind storm strike up now hahaha.  I caught a couple of really really unfortunate breaks in my first two holes. Second hole of the day I roast a drive straight down the middle and for those you not aware we received about 4 inches of rain yesterday and my ball hit and popped forward about 1 inch. leaving a massive 3 inch tear/divot behind my ball. I would have been better off backing it up. Anyway I was struggling to figure out a way to make a decent strike at the ball and had death left and super death right.  I tried to come down on the ball to make a super steep hit and hope it shot straight. well that always goes well and the ball shot off my hosel like a pro and that led to wonderful back and forth between bunkers hahaha. played ok from there on out and just didn't get the putts to drop.  Sometimes you are the hammer sometimes you are the nail and most days (especially USGA events) you are the nail.  I had an absolute blast and will work to get back.  Thanks again guys for all the encouragement. it really REALLY is appreciated and doesn't go unnoticed.  Made some new friends and memories for life.

USGA considers it "lift, clean, and cheat".  Still, gotta wonder how they'd have handled it at a US Open where all the pros would have whined, cried, and tweeted about it, had they been required to play the ball down.

Exactly. Had a USGA Fourball qualifier 2 years ago that was similar. I know most of the state golf association guys from playing tournament golf and they actually apologized to me and my partner on the first tee about the fact that they couldn't do anything for us because the USGA would DQ the entire field. Proceeded to have crap lies and mud balls for the day and just had to accept it. It's a bad break, but they stand pretty firm on not letting it happen unless absolutely necessary.

He's not kidding about how much rain we got.  My course closed because the greens were under water all afternoon , and I would tell you that course drains welll . Something like 4-5 inches in. 2 -3hours.

Good going anyway Kirk.   You now know the way , next year will be easier for sure !

Seems like you weren't getting any breaks from the very beginning!!!  Unfortunate string of events but sounds like you battled hard... Very cool experience overall I bet!!  Maybe next time things will go a little smoother for ya...  Congrats on getting as far as you did, though!

Wow, thanks guys appreciate it!!! You know it's funny because there was a couple of other little things that happened the day I arrived that added to the absurdity but they were small but as I told my buddy " Maybe this is all happening just so I can have a great story when I win"...He laughed and said "my a$$, you gotta go thru me first". haha.  As for lift, clean and place I played in the 2016 US Open qualifier and it was right during the Memorial day floods Houston was having. When I got to the course they said you will each be given 25 balls to warm up with and that is all. I took my balls and walked over to the range which was NO LIE 1" under water completely. I was hitting chip shots off of tee's. I just shook my head. It was still cloudy and rainy as well.  I get to the first tee and think "Surely it will be lift clean and place' and the USGA official says "Its not lift, clean and place and don't call me shirley"...hahaha just kidding. They didn't say that. But sure enough it was play the ball down so I was under NO illusion that in the actual National Championship we would be playing the ball up.  honestly I only had that one issue and maybe two more that my pitch mark effected a shot and they were on chip shots.  33/36 holes I played to where I would have been the 20th seed. Unfortunately the other 3 holes got me. I had a blast and made some great new friends  and saw some great shot making.  Hell I almost had a hole in one on my third hole of the tournament. lipped out a 5 iron from 215.  The guy who finished as the Medalist beat a great friend of mine Draegen Majors in the round of 64 and the guy ( not my buddy ) was throwing up from the second hole of the day and When I saw Draegen after they were done he told me about it and said he felt so bad for the guy and almost as if on cue the guy came around the corner of a car and bent over and started hurling right there.  True warrior spirit to gut out ( pun intended) a 3&2 victory against one of the best amateur golfers in the world. Golf is a wicked mistress at this level. Scott Hagestad shot 64 in round 2 of stroke play and got beat the very next day 3&1 by a guy who had a hole in one in round 2 on a par 4. The Crabapple course is just AWESOME and the staff was beyond wonderful. Cobie Lunsford, one of the assistants, was the MAN this week and busted his rear to help players.  The whole staff and membership did. I will be back, that I can promise and I now know what to focus more on and what to not get caught up in.  Charlotte next year is the place for me.

Thanks again guys for all the support and well wishes.

Hey Bro, thanks so much for taking us along for the ride!!

Itís been a long week and your posts made my day!!

Thank You 😊

As you so accurately stated, this game can be the absolutely cruelest mistress, and though it was ingrained in us early on that the only thing that counts is the number on card or the numbers on the score board, looking back, while we are on the course, on the field and in the competition, this is true. However, when the game is over, when the scores have been tallied, the cards signed and the final gun has sounded, there is so much more.

The amazing people that we are Blessed to have encountered, the unbelievable events that we were privileged to have been a part of and the Remarkable memories that we will carry with us for the rest of our lives. Yes, even in defeat, You are Blessed to have even been able to have been a participant.

You are Truly Blessed my Brother!!

Haha, ďBe The Hammer,Ē lol

Itís been some since Iíve heard that as Pete used to say that to a few of us prior to Tourneys. I used to put that in pink on the outside upper heel of my shoes, lol. This was from the IC MP Championship.

But Bro, Iíve gotta disagree with ya on one thing~

Youíre not a nail-

Youíve never ever been a nail~

Always the Hammer~

Win, lose or draw, Always the fackin Hammer!!

Itís just that sometimes, just as we miss that short slider, we miss the nail.

But ALWAYS the Hammer!!

ALWAYS!!

Keep Hammering Brother!!

Please donít ever stop :)

Much Love,
Richard

Thanks for sharing! Love hearing personal stories like this.

I'm in Canada but I've been to the Woodlands countless times visiting my sister, so when I read your first post I was pulling for you a little bit extra.

I'm sure this wont be the last time you make it this far!! Congrats

Congrats on getting this far this year, and from this experience, you'll be even further along next year.

I live in NC - not near Charlotte - but, if you want to stay in touch for next year, I would gladly consider caddying for you!

Did pretty well as a kid (earned a Chick Evans Scholarship from it....not even a passive brag)....so, I might be able to help you out.

Stay the course, and be the hammer! (Thanks, Richard)
