99% of the time the PGA Tour guys hit a 460cc driver off the deck, it's a dumb choice. That means everyone that hits driver off the deck that isn't a tour pro is making a dumb choice 99.999999999999999999% of the time.

That's just 100% wrong.

It's a good shot to use if you can hit it.  Good on you OP for experimenting, challenging yourself and expanding your golf game.

Can't for the life of me figure out how you guys are getting those kind of carry numbers with a modern driver off the deck. I carry my driver about 270-275 off a tee on a solid strike, but think I would be lucky to get 220 carry off the deck with it. Unless the ground is rock hard that won't help too much.

It's definitely not a shot for everyone.  I'm guessing your club head speed is a bit slower than what is really needed.  I'm 115-118 depending on how stiff I'm feeling.  Also note I am using TM R7 TP, not exactly modern.

This is exactly the point I was trying to make.  Thank you for the kind words of encouragement.  I posted this to hopefully inspire others to push the boundaries of their games.

Based on the multiple times I have snapped a head off at the hosel trying to hit driver off a tee, I won't be trying it off the deck.

i did it once

i'm convinced it was damaged on the ride over in the truck bed... 3rd swing i smashed the ball and the f****** club head went with it.
i couldn't believe it. neither could my buddy. nor the guy at the shop when i asked him for a new shaft.

Love driver off the deck and anytime I pull out driver from the fairway everyone in the group stops dead in their tracks because very few ppl are willing to risk the shot.

For me it’s all about a very smooth swing and just aiming about 10 yards left and I can pull the shot off about 80% of the time and worse case, it’s still very straight, just short so basically a layup.

So much fun for me to hit that shot

One Callaway Hyper X. Probably my fault, it was when I had literally just started and was as over the top as you could get and banged it off the range mat I guess.

One Taylormade Superfast 2.0. This one was odd, clean swing and the head just followed the ball.

My brother-in-law lost the head on  R7 Superquad earlier this year, though that club was old and possibly worn out.

Yep, even if you cold a** top it, it still runs down the fairway. Usually leaves at least a shot.

It's just not a high percentage shot, and I've never seen anyone hit it farther than their 3 wood. Almost guaranteed to fade though.

Exactly. The only time I see it useful is for a player who can't hit a low-fading 3 wood. Modern equipment has made the driver off the deck shot essentially obsolete.

Just wrong. I’ve seen guys do it including myself and with consistency. It’s truly one of the best shots in golf

I've tried this shot a few times, usually when my league has the "3 club day" and if I'm on the south course I'll take driver since I can hit it on all the non par 3s on that side. The thing that's thrown me is I'll play for a fade but then hit it pretty straight instead. Not a shot I'd probably try too often during a normal round.

Unless I'm on a par 5 with no hazards in front and it's wide open, I will take my chances laying up and pitching it.....I hit my 3 wood around 265-270 on a normal solid strike off the deck...if i'm 300 out, that only leaves me a little pitch....and I like my chances of landing my 3 wood on a certain side of the green to leave an easier pitch.  Another case of just because the pros do it, doesn't mean you should.  10 years ago, a different story with the shallower faced drivers it was easier to pull off.

It's not the player I don't respect, it's the shot I don't respect. 99% of pros don't ever hit the shot because they can hit that same shot with a 3 wood, 5 wood, 2 iron. It's just not a very versatile or high percentage shot. It used to be a very common shot, but technology has almost made it obsolete.

I've been a professional myself my entire adult life. Handicap is well into the plus range. I can hit driver off the deck, but choose not to, like most other pros, because the shot is a much lower percentage shot than using a different club. The modern 3 wood is built practically the same as an early 1990's driver, and therefore is much better at hitting the shot. The modern driver is designed to be hit in the middle or higher portion of an enormous face, not the very bottom. It's why even the most well-struck driver off the deck with a 460cc head is low, spinny, usually cuts, and goes nowhere.

I find it hard to believe that those of you who have the ability to hit this shot don't just use your 3 wood off the deck. You should be magic with a 3 wood off the deck if you can hit a morbidly obese driver off the deck. Those of you who like the shot, do yourselves a favor and buy a deep faced 3 wood or mini driver. You'll kiss the driver off the deck goodbye forever.

Sure is fun to watch Rickie Fowler and Bubba hit driver off the deck though. It even works out for them sometimes, almost as well as if they just hit 3 wood ;)

I used to play with a guy who had this crazy Yonex bat and he would clobber it, high tight fades off the deck, every damn time. Not me man, I couldn't even hit my old 10.5 Burner off the deck. Hell I couldn't hit that piece of crap off a tee, who am I kidding? I still have it if anybodies in the market as hey say. The club is beat to hell but the center of the face still looks like new.

The only time I hit driver off the deck is when I have trees in front of me and I have to keep the ball low when I punch out. It's a difficult Club to use and you really have to concentrate when you use it out of the rough or Fairway. Sometimes the 3-wood is just too much loft to advance the ball under some tree limbs.

I got a buddy that can do it, + handicap and very shallow through the ball.  It comes out low/mid and hot, great 2nd shot into the wind on a long par 5.

cant see more than 1 player per Pro 4 day tournament using it so I think powedertoastman is spot on.

Do you watch every single shot that is hit during that four day tournament?
do you?

Nope. But I'm also not claiming to see only one player in a four day tournament using that shot. That was you.
