I guess the turbulators didn't really do much for Rick except til he got to the G400 with slightly smaller head size may have may the biggest difference. Also shows you that the Ping G20 was a really solid driver. I guess newer isn't always better.

Used to have a G20 years ago. Got it for a song, put my favorite shaft in it and let it fly. Was a great driver but guess it had a bit of a closed face because my misses went well left.

But...

Turned around and sold it for more than I paid for it.

No one can argue that Ping drivers hold their value. And in the day and age of a new release coming out every 6 months and causing a drop in value it's sort of refreshing to know that there is a brand that doesn't feel it necessary to constantly come out with "newer/better".

Wow.  Ping G20 with a shaft that would be frowned upon by many WRXers a measly 3 yards behind the latest and greatest.  #maxedout
I'm off to Ebay to look for a Ping G20.  :D

My post from Sept 6!!
Posted 06 September 2017 - 08:44 PM

Maybe was tired of looking at my G20. Played M2 and Nike Vapor pro 2016 this year, big mistake. Ping's 20's more forgiving, longer and more accurate
then these two. it's back in my bag. Don't think all these hyped driver improvements have really happened, all product selling gimmicks.

As far as I'm concerned, I've never hit a driver longer than the TiSiTec.  But it wasn't very forgiving and was very sensitive to getting the best JX hosel for your particular swing.  That JX hosel also made it a bite to try different shafts.  But if you could get it dialed in and could hit the sweet spot with decent swing it would really go.

I've just gone from a G20 to a G400. I had the stock tour stiff in the G20, though I did flirt with an exotic shaft for a while (Quadra Fire Express 6SX).
The G20 was a solid driver, and I hit some memorable shots with it, but I don't regret splashing out on the G400 one bit. I would say the newer driver is longer on average by quite a bit because it is so much more forgiving. In a recent round, I got away with a couple of pretty horrible strikes that I feel sure would not have ended so well if I had still be using the G20.
For me, the G20 was a great driver--I stuck with it for 5 years--but the G400 is even better.

The thing I love about golfwrx is looking up old threads when a new model has come out - G10 vs G15 etc.  Some people will say they gained yards, some will say they lost yards and some will say there was no difference.  You can see threads for each new model comparing to the last and get pretty much the same answers.

Yet when someone posts a thread along the lines of 'will a modern driver go further than my G10' the replies will say that they will pick up something in the region of 25 yards...

I think tests like this are great and show that if your numbers are reasonably good and you have the forgiveness you need there is no need to upgrade.

Re; Bolded text:  I don't see a lot of those to be honest (I mostly read Titleist and Ping equipment threads).  What I do read a lot of as it pertains to jumping up multiple driver models is that your good for good will be about the same distance wise, but manufacturers have made progress on getting ballspeed up on off-center strikes.  Drivers have become more forgiving in the past 12 years, but not a lot longer on center strikes.

True.  But that never stops people around here from proclaiming the 2nd coming of Christ each time a new driver is released.  Maybe we should tell the guy that says "(brand XYZ driver) is XX yards longer" with something to the effect of "congratulations on the extra distance, too bad your old driver was so poorly fit to you."

He's performed the same test with TM and Callaway, only to find similar results. There wasn't much difference between the clubs.

This test does not surprise me atvall. I apply this to all clubs. If you have a well fit driver and shaft, to me, nothing "new" is going to be much better. My driver is only 3 years old and I have demo'd probably 15 drivers the last 3 years and none gave me 10+ yards gained or anything crazy. Most were within +\- 5 yards. I find this with my irons too. Take away jacket up lofts and I have not found any irons better than what I play. To me I usually switch out when I get an itch or just want something different to look down at.
