http://www.golfchann...havior-prez-cup

While I enjoy these teams events I've personally felt that the Ryder Cup (its the one I pay most attention to) is getting a little out of hand in some aspects. The golf is great and for the most part the sportsmanship is good but the fan (all sides) behaviour is depreciating significantly - its been noticeable in recent times.

For me its not a golf issue but I'm a little disappointed its found its way into golf. Sadly its being encouraged at events like the Phoenix Open - https://www.golfdige...-that-to-others - they embraced a booze fuelled mess at the 16th and it now appears to be out of control.

One of the reasons I enjoy golf more than other sports is its values.

Unfortunately at the Ryder cup and presidents cup (a bit surprised at the presidents cup as i didnt think anyone cared) you get a lot of non golf fans, who are also pretty wasted

most of this is stupid, wasted, Americans who think they bought a ticket to a war.

So many alcohol infuse blow hards, who think others think they are cool for treating people like dogsh!t.

I was f'ing embarrassed watching the Ryder Cup.  Is that how you treat people?  That is not patriotic.

The sense of entitlement some people have these days is disturbing.

I agree. Those misbehaving miscreants should be tossed off the course. Of course, that will happen when slow play penalties begin to be levied.

Super IDIOT fans have made it to pro golf but it pales in comparison to what's heard at NFL games and pro soccer in Europe.  Just tune it out and ignore it.  That stuff is not going away.

I acknowledge being out of place, rooting for Europe at Medinah, but people are just vile.

I was treated terribly, was pushed several times in the back, in a crowd, cussed at.  Looking back, wish I would have been there on Sunday, to laugh at all of those jackasses, but that would make me like them.

I don;t understand why fans can't show sportsmanship also.  We all want who we want to win, but that does not always happen, and does not give a person the right to be a *****.

Live and let live man, help a brotha out when he is down, we are all in the thing together anyway....

I am all for golf being a gentlemens sport and I really feel that the organizers need to do a better job of policing the "arena" so to speak.  The alcohol being served at 7am needs to be curbed as does some of the other things BUT The Ryder Cup and Pres Cup are literally formulated and designed with a gladiator sport in mind.  This behavior in this environment is not something new and it isn't going to stop.  These event's are the closest thing to a gladiator arena as it gets and the crowd responds accordingly.  I am NOT justifying this at all but saying if you don't like hearing people scream and cheer and boo and jeer then don't go or don't play.   No offense to Marc's wife but the behavior at the President's cup was nowhere near the level of the Ryder Cup.  It's human nature that when things become lopsided and people smell blood in the water ( possible close out / win for US) it will bring out the cutthroat mentality. Again, I'm not saying it was right but the circumstances tilted it toward that.  I am not saying there wasn't anything bad going on but to the level of the Ryder cup at Hazeltine I doubt.  Organizers have a responsibility to keep the players and players families safe from physical harm.  I know this isn't a populist opinion but if she doesn't like hearing people "cheer" against her husband then maybe she shouldn't attend.  This is mano y mano and you literally are playing agains a person not the course or score so THIS isnt' the golf she knows, she is correct. This is gladiator golf.

edit: please don't think I am justifying the actions of some idiots or people who went over the line. I think we are all on the same page that the "idiots" need to go. period.  But just because someone chears for bad shot or boos for a good one doesn't mean they shouldn't be allowed to watch golf on site.  Alcohol before Noon should be a no no  also.

They're just TV shows. We're not forced to watch them, nor compelled to attend the "events."
Knowledge of the Rules is part of the applied skill set which a player must use to play a round of competitive golf.

ill just never understand people who have to be drunk to enjoy themselves...  not talking about folks with legitimate addiction... talking about those that have to drink till there stupid to watch sports....  makes no sense to me... same thing at concerts...... my wife and i used to love to see live music..  but after we paid handsomely for box seats , and discovered a couple of 50 something drunks were already sloshed before the music started....  my wife had to change seats with me to get away from the guy as he couldnt stay in his lane...  half way through he spills a full beer into his wifes purse and all over the floor, so now we are sitting with feet up to get away from the pond underneath...  then he starts dancing in the puddle splashing etc all over us....  all the while smiling and trying to engage with us...   i could have thrown him off the balcony and felt good about it i was so pissed off....i coild understand this behavior if we were in "the pit" or the general admission standng area,... but this was a balcony box that had 6 seats.... these 2 a******* were taking up 4 of them and they flooded all 6...... wasnt an isolated incident either.... we were surrounded below and above by the same type thing.... so we left before the final curtain... stopped at waffle house , and chalked it up to a life lesson...  lesson is ..dotn waste money on live events,  only way to be around drunks is to be drunk...   so we watch on TV ...sad but true..

My office gave me 4 tickets to the Virginia Tech-Ohio State football game in Blacksburg in 2015.  My wife and I took our then 10 and 7 year old daughters to the game not thinking a thing in the world about it.  We left pretty early on in the 1st quarter given the vile, disgusting behavior our girls were being exposed to.  Mostly by drunken, middle aged men.  I have politely declined tickets as a result ever since.

I don't understand the behavior or the desire.  I also feel like most people forget young eyes are watching this behavior.  It's become a vicious cycle being repeated generation after generation.

But, in a sense, I guess we are all complicit to a certain degree.  As long as we keep supporting the things that put strain on the fabrics of society with our dollars, they are going to keep selling it to us.

When I lived in SoCal I went to a lot of San Diego Chargers games. Never when they played the Raiders though. Watching those “fans” sucked all the enjoyment out of the game.

Trying to negotiate the parking lot made me feel like en embedded reporter in Iraq. It’s the same reason I stopped going to Dodgers games. Drunken idiots ruined a fun experience.

Humans are a bizarre species that will make itself extinct, never realizing the potential it had.

Modern western society thinks its so clever, but it's not really much better than a herd of 15 year old boys.

I like the rowdy atmosphere.  But you have to draw the line at distracting the other side while they are at play, and saying anything offensive such as personal insults or racist, homophobic, xenophobic, etcetera type statements.  I think we all know that these fans aren't on their best behavior as a group.  Did this group behave excessively bad in comparison to other crowds? It didn't seem like it to me but who knows.

And let's not forget how embarrassing this was for their side.  There has to be a lot of frustration and sour grapes coming out here as well.  That's just human nature.

I'm all for having a good time and enjoying a cocktail at a sporting event....but some of the stuff that's been going on in the last few team events has been an embarrassment.

I get that heckling is an accepted part of a lot of sports (I was kind of amazed at the first few hockey games I attended in Nashville) but when "other sport" fans start attending golf events they seem to have a hard time turning it off.

There's something to be said about being graceful in victory -- especially when it's a rout like last weekend.

And let's not forget how embarrassing this was for their side.  There has to be a lot of frustration and sour grapes coming out here as well.  That's just human nature.

As to the question aboot these fans vs other Ryder cup etc fans.  I don't know the answer. But look at where it was and I bet you can guess that they were pretty " outspoken".  And I'll leave it at that

most of this is stupid, wasted, Americans who think they bought a ticket to a war.

So many alcohol infuse blow hards, who think others think they are cool for treating people like dogsh!t.

I was f'ing embarrassed watching the Ryder Cup.  Is that how you treat people?  That is not patriotic.

The sense of entitlement some people have these days is disturbing.

Yes sir !   100% agree

I agree. Those misbehaving miscreants should be tossed off the course. Of course, that will happen when slow play penalties begin to be levied.

Here's how to fix both: reverse the penalties.  Take the glacially slow PGA Tour players and instead of fining them toss them off the property; stamp their cards DNF and tell them to play faster next week or else they'll get tossed again.  Take the misbehaving miscreants and instead of tossing them off the course fine them the $25k that the multimillionaire slow pros would just shrug off.  Boom!  Both problems solved.

A man can dream, can't he......

Eliminate the sale of alcohol at these events.........but, it will never happen

I'm inclined to agree.

One thing they could do is have specific viewing areas that are "kid/family friendly" where there is no tolerance for drunks.

Please Dude, Cupcakes is not the preferred nomenclature.  It's Snowflake-Americans, Dude.
