I am currently looking for the 2-3 year old iron for budget reasons. I am an 10 handicapper and have always preferred a cavity back iron as ball striking is not my strength so seeking forgiveness with some workability. 7 iron goes 165. Likely seeking game improvement vs players. Currently playing Taylor Made burner 2.0 from 2010. Budget is up to $500.

Tons of tweener irons out there these days.  Depends what suits your eye, what sole you can work best, and shaft fits your swing (that you can find in 2-3 year old lightly used sets). $500 should get you into Mizuno JPX-850 Forged or MP-15, Titleist 712/714 AP2s, Srixon Z 745/765, Callaway Apex Pro or '13 X Forged, Wilson Staff FG Tour v4, TaylorMade Tour Preferred MC/CB, Cobra Forged Tec, Ping i25 or even S55.  Probably forgetting a few.  I'm partial to Srixon & Mizuno.  Hope you find something that helps you become a better ball striker!

WITB Winter 2017-18
Cobra BioCell+ 5W 17.5 Rogue Max 75
Mizuno MP-15 6i 31 DG S300
Mizuno MP-15 PW 46 KBS Tour 120
Mizuno T7 SW 56.10 DG Wedgeflex
Odyssey White Hot Pro 7CS

Ping i25's are pretty cheap these days and offer a lot of forgiveness. I had them for a while and the were great, but I discovered the Mizuno mp69 and fell in love but I always will like the Pings. I also second the Wilsons mentioned in the above post. haven't owned them, but have hit them a few times and was impressed with the feel and forgiveness.
Callaway Big Bertha Alpha DBD 9*
Cobra Bio Cell Fairway 14.5
Cobra Bio Cell hybrid 17*
Mizuno MP 69 3-P DS300 Gold Stiff
Taylormade Tour Preferred EF52*
Taylormade Tour Preferred EF 58*
Putter: Scotty Futura X5 38" or Bobby Jones Milled Blade

If I were you I'd consult the Maltby Playability Factor ratings which rates clubs on their suitability for certain types of players. One set I'd recommend from personal experience are the Cleveland TA5 or TA7s which are rated by Maltby as a 'Super Game Improvement Club'. They sit behind the ball beautifully, are very easy to hit and, if you can find them in black gunmetal, look fabulous. I had my TA5s for ten years and played some of my best golf with them. These days you can pick up a set on eBay for under $200.

Probably the Burner 2.0's your playing now. lol

Second highest Moi ever recorded on a Taylormade iron as per the Maltby site. Non of the newest TM's have a higher MOI.

Ping G's are about the most forgiving iron around if u can handle the offset.

Been playing some original Burners as of late and one wouldn't know there 8 years old by the way they hit. I just sent them in to have my favourite shafts installed in them.  Do yours have shafts suited to your swing or are they just the ones that came with the clubs?

Also have some Stenson Legacy Blacks that are a more forgiving player style. Soft and fun to hit.

I am waiting for some Japan spec [lower offset] Ping  Rapture V2 irons to be delivered.

Also waiting on a  set of Epon  AF-502's.

My handicap is similar to yours and i am looking forward to hitting my new to me  hopefully forgiving irons.

Best of luck in your search.

Keep your eyes open for Srixon 545s, think they're ~$600 right now.  Or you could wait for Srixon to release the new product line and grab 565s.

Where are you finding a set of OnOff irons for ~$500?  Aren't they priced in the premium JDM bracket with Miura and Epon?

Great post

What stood out to me are the 714AP2.  You should be able to find these for ~$400 all day with a bazillion shaft choices. I'm a Mizzy guy but after much research put my son into these. He said it felt like cheating.
I can Break Rocks
Krank F-5.. UST Tour and or the Cobra F7+ > no winner yet.
Adams Speedline 15* Wasabi stiff

Wilson 2 iron from the 1980s, teaspoon shaft unknown.
Mizuno MP-52 3-PW (48*), DG X100, may soon get recoils.
Mizuno MP R-12 at 54* and 60* DG spinners.
Bettinardi C-01
THE Kirkland Signature 4 piece urethane cover golf ball.
