I will be spending a week in southern California in mid October. Two of those days will be in the Palm Springs area.

I am trying to pack as much golf in as I can in 2 full days, so I am looking at either 52 or maybe 72 holes in 2 days.

Between public access and overseeding, I have narrow my search down to 5 courses:

One of the JW Desert Springs courses (I can't remember which is open)
Desert Willow - Firecliff
PGA West - Norman Course
La Quinta - Mountain Course
Westin Mission Hills - Player Course

Has anyone spent time out there and played these courses to recommend, or rank the courses? Or are there other options I may have missed?

I will be out there playing by myself, so I will welcome a game or two if anyone here seeing this is located in the Palm Springs area. I'm about a 5 for what it's worth.

Thank!

I've only played the Mission Hills Country Club tournament and Palmer courses as well as PGA West stadium course. Liked them all enough to be going back again in March. Need to double check with the reseeding schedules as many will be closed. Looks like the Norman course won't reseed till the end of October.

I highly recommend checking Golfnow.com Hot Deals and Teeoff.com Deal Times for all of these. I just played up there and found everything for like $20-$40. Check greenskeeper.org for aerification alerts too.

One of the JW Desert Springs courses (I can't remember which is open)
Valley is open, Palms is closed. I like Palms better but Valley is a good course too. Fairly easy, with some water trouble holes.

Desert Willow - Firecliff
Awesome course. Mountain View is really good too but is closed. Very challenging, undulated, almost links style.

PGA West - Norman Course
I would pass on Norman. Too narrow, lots of drives run into desert/waste/bushes trouble areas. Small greens. Blind shots. Nicholas is my favorite of the three, Stadium is second. Nicholas is very wide open, water trouble, good amount of fairway bunkers, not super challenging.

La Quinta - Mountain Course
Haven't played this one yet but heard good things about it.

Westin Mission Hills - Player Course
I liked this one more than Pete Dye course, very wide open, water trouble, very challenging front nine holes more exposed to wind, then the back nine tightens up a little thru the houses on the back nine. Do not buy the food, it's just old/stale sandwiches for $9. The pro shop is a bungalow. They just had LPGA Q School there last month. Great course but no amenities so bring your own food/beers.

I'd also recommend Desert Falls Country Club (cheap $20 Golfnow), Marriott Shadow Ridge ~$40, Escena $20, and if you wanna spring for something really nice go for Classic Club (Troon course $100 or $75 on Golfnow; my favorite course there).

Desert Willow I like a lot.

LaQuinta Mountain is good you will enjoy that.

Norma course I wouldn't play. Play the stadium or Nicklaus course.

Indian Wells resort has two nice courses.

I'll be the naysayer on Firecliff.  Not a bad course but in general overpriced IMO.  But of course if you're playing desert golf in the fall everything is overpriced.  Escena is great fun but not the most difficult challenge  you will find out there.

One of the JW Desert Springs courses (I can't remember which is open)  Haven't played
Desert Willow - Firecliff  I wasn't at my best so I kinda hacked it.  Seems to be a fan favorite.
PGA West - Norman Course  Haven't played
La Quinta - Mountain Course  Had a good time.  Some (a number of) holes you need local knowledge and would play very differently knowing what I know now.
Westin Mission Hills - Player Course  Has some holes really tight to the houses.  You need to pay attention to what tees you use and driver isn't always the right club on a couple of Par 5's and 4's.  Don't expect to eat here before or after.

If you haven't been there before, make sure you have the GPS loaded.  LaQinta Mtn, I still wasn't sure I was in the right place when I got there.

BIg Horn is great.  We played it and I didnt even see another group on the golf course the whole time we were there.  Also has one of the best mens locker rooms I have ever been in.

All the courses you mentioned are good tracks minus the JW Marriot course.  I played it as second 18 of a day and remember being bored by the course and wondering when it would be over.  That never happens to me when playing golf.  So I'd skip that one.

Big Horn looks great. If anyone can get me on, let me know. I'm a bit hamstrung by the time of year with overseeding. I'm staying at JW, so I'll play there once most likely. Right now I'm booked at Mountain course and Firecliff.

I would recommend shadow ridge over the desert springs courses.....played there some years ago and it's solid....i wasn't very impressed by the courses at Desert Springs.

The Palm Springs area is awesome in the Fall.  It's a completely different feeling in the air than most other places in the country, because instead of prime golf season slowing down,...it's just starting there.  Makes it feel like April/May in most other places

Just came back from Palm Springs. Greens at the Mission Hills Gary Player were a little rough and brown in spots, but the rest of the course was in great shape. Everything at Classic club was in awesome shape and can't wait to get back there again.

Your list is solid.   I would modify a little. MAKE SURE YOU UNDERSTAND THE OVERSEED SCHEDULE

I'll give you an 'out of 10' rating- related to layout/design vs. shape.

Desert Willow - Firecliff (8.5/10)
PGA West - Norman Course (8.5/10)
La Quinta - Mountain Course (7.5/10)
Westin Mission Hills - Player Course (8/10)

Add:

Indian Wells - Celebrity (9/10)-
Indian Wells - Player (9/10)
Marriott Shadowridge (8.9/10)
Classic Club (9/10)

Was there this past weekend.

Stadium course shut down Monday to overseed for the next 3-4 weeks.

Nicklaus is still in overseed condition for a while
