Slammin' Sammy Snead did it as a kid. I think that had a lot to do with the tempo and balance he developed. And, I could get into the discussion about "the best swing ever" but that is already in another thread, so, I'll leave that for now.
But, a story, boys and girls---
A few years ago, I was helping a friend out with his business (not golf related) and I had to go Virginia Beach for a week's worth of seminars. On Friday, one of the other attendees signaled me to meet him out in the hall, and when I met him there, he said he and his buddy were going to play 18, and did I want to join him??? I said sure, but that I didn't have my clubs,,etc. He said no problem, they have clubs to rent at this course.
It was a fair to middlin' public course, but the only rental set they had available was a ladies set. And, the only shoes I had were some leather soled loafers. So...this guy was a high-roller, and he suggested a game. Of course, having to play with women's clubs, I negotiated the bet to give me a little room...and, off we went
After the first tee, I took off those slick soled shoes and played barefoot (I had done it many times when I was much younger). Got to the 7th hole, a par 3 about 155 yards, and as I was on the tee, the ranger pulled up in his cart. Saw me barefoot, and said you need to have shoes on to play. Explained my situation to him, but he wasn't too sympathetic, so I asked him: "If I hit it inside 15', can I play the rest of my round barefoot?"
He gave this a little thought and said "sure" (active brag alert) - so, I soft stroked this ladies 6 iron to about 10'. The ranger just shook his head and said "just put your shoes on when you get to the 9th green and 10th tee and drove off.
For the record, I took my new friend for a couple bucks (and don't you think he wasn't fuming, getting beat by someone using women's clubs). It was all good, as I bought all the drinks, and with the amount of $$$ I won, there were many drinks.
ah....the good old days...........and, there wasn't goose gunk or duck dack anywhere on the course, either
