Hi everybody,

I'm a 9.2hcp golfer looking to upgrade my clubs now that I'm playing more regularly. Currently in using Nike T40 driver and woods, Watson wedges and an old set of Knight cavity backs.

I live in a semi rural area of Ontario, so I don't have many opportunities to go to a large golf retailer to demo, though I've been fitted by a local pro with a monitor so I have an idea of  options, lie and bounce angles, etc.

If anybody could suggest some preowned club lines to consider going for, it would definitely help my search as far as using online sources are concerned.

I'm willing to go around $400 for the irons, $120 ish each for the woods and about $50 per wedge.

Thanks, and good luck on the links!

Edit: I should mention I'm looking for a players cavity or bladed iron (mine aren't oversized and traditionally lofted, and I learned in a set of Spalding butter knives from the 50's), no hybrids, and Driver, 3w, 5w around 9.5*, 14.5*, 19*. Adjustability isn't a factor, couldn't care less.

I also don't need an enormous driver - mine is about 300cc, I think.

Cutoff year would probably be 2010 at the oldest, unless there's some real gems in very good condition that are worth picking up.

Thanks for the reply!

I've tried globalgolf and golfavenue but there seems to be a ridiculous amount of selection and I'm not sure which clubs were considered good in their respective years.

Does anything stand out from through 2015 loo at?

The best thing to do is if you find a set you like that have the specs you want, then google them for reviews!

I think it would help if you said how far back you were willing to go, and what sort of irons you were after.
For example, smaller cavity backs, hollow irons, GI, SGI, or GI Joe.
OK, that last one isn't really an option.

Your question is too open ended.  There are dozens if not a hundred different iron sets that would be better than what you are now using.  The question is one of preferences.

@NoCatchyNickname and Nessism, fair enough. I did get thinking after the last post that I probably should have mentioned a cutoff date, club type, etc.

I'll amend the original post to include it.

Thanks, both of you.

Reading through these 2014 user reviews on here as well. Good tip to whoever mentioned looking for those.

If you're in Ontario then Buffalo, N.Y. isn't that far away. We have a local Golf Galaxy that has a decent amount of used clubs on hand. Definitely worth the drive.

You'd think so except I'm north of North Bay, which is already three hours from the Hamilton crossing. Might as well go to Toronto and Golf Town at that point.

Look at mizuno, 825 and 850 pros are good irons for under 400. Their bladed options from that time frame are good too. As for a driver, I just ordered a Ping Anser with a Diamana in it for 70 off the bay. Good low spin combo. After you figure what you’re looking for definitely check there for a steal. Good luck!

This looks solid. I haven't hit a hybrid at all yet but the nearest Golf Town has all of your top of bag options so I can test them.

I am a bit concerned that the Aero TP seems longer than standard length for their club sizes though. Had anybody found them more difficult to control?

I agree with the Mizuno jpx 825 pro. I was playing a set earlier this summer and they were fantastic. I still kind of miss them.

Titleist 714 AP2's are fantastic irons and they can be had fairly cheap on the second hand market.  The 714 AP2's are so good that Jordan Spieth delayed his switch to the 716's for far longer then the brass at Titleist would have preferred.    :-)

As far as eBay goes, has anybody had problems with counterfeits? I got really good at spotting fake Les Pauls when I was guitar shopping years ago and I've heard fake clubs are a thing.

I get clubs off eBay almost exclusively, and I find most of the time I deal with golfers moving gear to make way for new purchases.  Or I deal with golf stores with eBay accounts.  I've never run into anything that looked suspicious.  I think if you stick to strictly purchasing second hand gear, you'll be fine.  And you can find a lot of stuff that is in nearly new condition that someone wants to move so they can keep up with the jones.

Same Hcp as OP, if I had to start over I could probably build most of my bag back at his budget with 2014-16 gear.  Cobra F6 woods, Srixon Z 745 irons, Mizuno S5 wedges.
Checking out the 20% off sale at GlobalGolf, the iron sets are getting kinda picked over.  -someone bought the 588 CB/MB set I'd been eying-  Still found VG Ping S55 3i-PW for under $400, Cobra LTD open box 1W $200 & 3W $135.  Plenty of RTX-3 wedges to choose from.  Jump on it!
Btw, I've bought woods, wedges, putters, & components on eBay, no trouble with fakes.  Deal with high volume/high feedback sellers.

Cobra King F6+ 1W 11.5° Diamana D+ 63 S
Cobra King F6 3-4W 14.5° LTD Rogue Black 70 S

Mizuno JPX-850 Forged 5i-GW C-Taper Lite 110 S

If look at some of their sets of mizunos, lots of options in your price range depending on your tastes. I played a set of mx300 for several years and really liked the feel of them.

Although the 712 ap2 for around 300 with the discount would be pretty tempting if I was currently looking, they are all standard specs and might be a good place to start.

Irons - MP-54s or MP-33s

Woods - For $120 you can get something fairly recently produced. If Callaway CPO ships to canada i'd check around there. Tons of options really. I'd actually spend less on the woods, and more on wedges. See below.

Wedges - SM4's, but with wedges I'd be leary of buying very old/used, particularly with sand wedges. It's been shown a lot of use in sand will wear the grooves down much faster than just using off the fairway, etc. I'd consider buying these new, or barely used (like off the rack demo's or something).
