I got paired up on the second day of a town tourney with a guy that is always trying to break through on the long drive tour. He plays to about a 4.

On this course, the first 9 we play is incredibly tight, so he's hitting 3-iron off the tee most of the time 250-270. We make the turn to the much more open backside. He finally takes the driver out. 500 yard par 5 up the hill. Pretty open.

He crushes one and says "get down". There is woods past the dog leg. But nobody ever gets there so we don't even look at it. I watch his ball carry about 15 feet in the air still into the woods. Uphill. Break out the laser, 320 yards. Uphill and carried the whole way.

I've never seen anyone in that woods off their drive before or since.

Why on earth would you brag about driving distance? even if you're long or WRX long, just let your drives do the talking! I would never brag about my golf, as it always tends to go south at some point, no one is immune to a bad day.
Having said that, I played with a cricketer who could hit it a mile without having an hcp reflective of his swing speed. He drove alongside the green on a 300m par 4, breeze against. So yeah...they're out there!

I got play with TJ Oshie in Grand Forks ND once. One of the nicest people I have ever met btw, but I wasn't a big hockey fan at the time so I didn't know this was guy was a stud. Anyways we're playing kings walk, and he keeps hooking it blaming his shoes...he was wearing flip flops. Finally on 6 or 7 he broke them and played barefoot the rest of the day. It was like he was a completely different guy, stupid long just a bullet. The amazing part to me was how fast the ball got down range and the sizzle it made for the first 40 yards or so. Incredible how much speed some people can create

And the sound of impact is impressive. I play with a young guy with a legit 300+ carry, and the sound his shot makes is crazy, especially when we are inside during the winter playing sim golf.

Here's my personal favourite.  This happened to me a few weeks ago during a fitting and I shared it another thread, but it is very applicable here:

More icing on the cake today.  Fitting a guy out of his Amp driver, set to 10.5*.  Ask him his typical driver distance after he claimed our CG2s were woefully short.  "Typically 260-290 total on average."  I raised my eyebrow and said "No you don't.  That is a massive difference in distance.  Your ball speed is around 141...260 I could see once and a while, but 290, sorry, it's physically impossible for you to hit it that far with your swing and ball speed."  He responds: "Well then I'm obviously swinging faster outside then aren't it.  I hit it 260 uphill all the time." "Okay then...moving on.  Your ball speed is 141 and you should be carrying it about 238, you're carrying it 208 because your launch and spin are out.  And you're wearing flip flops, that can do it."  He responds with "I always golf in flip flops.  Seriously, I do, and I hit it 290 doing it."  "Okay then, let's see if we can get your launch and spin better...."

As for actually on the course, not really.  Working in a golf store with a bunch of younger guys they tend to be longer than average and have the data to back it up.  We all hit off the sim almost every day during our breaks, so we know our carry numbers down to basically the yard.  So nothing really in recent memory.  If anything it's usually similar stories of really short hitters (sub-220 total) thinking I am some sort of long drive god when I carry it 250 and it rolls out to somewhere 265-270.

Oh I guess I have one more pseudo-long story and one legit long story.  Many years ago there was a guy looking at the Big Bertha 2004 irons we had on sale at the time (probably 2005, very early 2006).  He is an older guy, visibly in his mid-60s to early 70s or he had a very rough life and was only in his 50s.  Anyway, he tells me he is a long hitter and "drives the guys I play with wild when I hit my PW 150 yards" but admitted he was looking for something a little more forgiving now as time was catching up with him.  I tape up a 7i (which is customary) and leave him to this thing for a bit.  I poke my head in and almost get steam rollered over by the guy angrily leaving the sim with steam coming out of his ears.  "Your simulator is wrong!  It's saying I am only hitting the 7i 135 yards.  This is ridiculous, how do you expect to sell any clubs with a lying simulator?" [Or something to that effect, it is always a similar script].  I just told him that while the simulator is not perfect (I think we used Vector at that time), we have noticed that it is about 5% shorter on irons due to the extra spin but it is not massively out.  It is usually a pretty good indicator of total distance, I explained that at the time I hit a 7i about 155 total and that's exactly what I got in the room.  He got a glazed over look in his eye and said he had to go and I never saw him again.

My actual long story happened a few years later, coincidentally with another sale Callaway iron set, the Razr X Black.  These were on massive sale, something like $400 for the iron set when they were around $900 new.  So combined with the weight of Callaway's name and the sale price these were flying off the shelf.  I taped up a 6i for a guy in his mid-20s and left him to it for a minute.  Popped my head in and he was HAMMERING it 245 carry.  I was like uhhhh, I think my machine is set up wrong, hold on.  Checked it and everything was a go.  He was just killing it.  He asked me if these would be a good fit for him as he wanted something easy to hit.  I leveled with him and told him that with his 105-110mph swing speed with an iron there was going to be nothing stiff enough for him in the price point he was looking at.  I told him to just buy these because they were such a good sale price and they were going straight, and then look at investing in some shafts like X7 or Ozik Program 130 XX later on.

Played with a guy that said he hits it 280-290. We get to a 180yrd par 3 and he hits #2 hybrid. Ummm OK.

Btw. He couldn't sniff 250 let alone 280-290. Good times.

I told you I hurt my back that day and didn't you see me choke up like 5 inches?  I was trying to hit my baby, control fade to that tucked pin on the opposite side of the green so I had an easier putt.  Of course I missed the green, but I thought I heard someone hit the accelerator on the cart 5 holes away....

I have a semi embarrassing confession for this thread.

Current 2 cap tournament golfer...and up until this year I thought I was a 300 hitter. I was longer than most I played with, distance not an issue anywhere on a course.

I got a game golf GPS tagging system...turns out I average 281 with a driver. Sure I get some 300 and the odd bomb 320 but I also hit the majority in the 270-285 range.

I stopped telling people I was a 300 hitter this year lol! Turns out I'm not WRX long.

I say the same thing when I stripe one! Only problem is people think I'm from a foreign country and try to teach me American curse words to say to the cart girl.

About 13 years ago I was playing with some guys from work for the first time.  I had length at the time and would often get it out past 300.  Heck I was often recruited for scrambles and won at least 4 two ball putters from long drives.  Anyway, one of them asked if I wanted to wager who would have the most longest drives at the end of the day.  It was an open trac so I said sure.   I go first an pipe one down the middle.   He walked up and said hell of a drive.  He then takes his 3w and out drives me.   The few times he hit driver it was insane.

Of course He was later sponsored, won a few real long drive competitions and even came in second at the big event.

I never bragged about my length but if asked was always happy to tell people I was.   However, I never said I was long again.

Play in a lot of scrambles and usually go as a single and get paired with whoever.  Couldn't tell you how many times I've played with guys who would hit it off the planet trying to keep up with me or would ask what iron I'm hitting and then try to hit the same thing only to come up 20 yards short and right of the green.

Ah the proverbial length measuring contest. In both regards, I enjoy the fact that the worlds average is so short. Just say that I am longer than average and be happy about that. Don't want to hype it up too much, then you may not live up to expectations, lol.
I felt really good about that shot....

They all teed off, and as a result of the ribbing, the girl hit a drive to show them what they were missing. She bombed it about 30 yards past the longest hitter....

Good for her. There are few things I life that I absolutely can't stand, the "your a girl so I must be better" attitude is absolutely one of them.

I must have some good luck in my walk ons. Everyone I get pairs with wants to play 1 box back from the senior/forward box. If I were being true to my off the tee distance I should play back 1 more, and I've had multiple people tell me to, including two people who didn't speak English very well who just pointed at the other box every time... but my mid-long iron play is so suspect that those boxes give me grief over 18.

I guess i am what you would call a "ringer" based on my handicap. I've been a pretty good player for 30 years. I'm just a competitor by trade, I guess. I'm NOT super long, in MY opinion. I have TWO groups of guys I play with, the low handicap guys that can shoot around par, with one guy that can drop a 63 on me anytime, anywhere. The OTHER group I call the "105 club". They think I'm GOD. Yes, I can hit it 300 a few times a round, maybe hammer one 320, but I'm a 270-280 "keep it in play" type of guy. The 105 guys always seem to bring a guy that they says "bombs it" He does, ONCE a round, the only time they use his ball.....Sure, he has great club head speed, and flushes it, once or twice a round. He wants to be like me, and I don't want to be like him, not even once a round.....The last guy did hit one around 360, and it was pretty, shot mid 90's......Got another one coming on a few weeks, it'll be fun, again!.....Guys ask me all the time what i did to get my handicap down.  I learned to keep it in play and eliminate the "BIG'' miss. I have a 240 "go to shot, a faded choke down 3-wood). Let the bombers bomb it.........260 is the new 300, according to Bushnell.......lol

The one generic story I can tell you is that I have gone on vacation to Vegas many times and always bring the clubs. I cannot tell you how many times on the first tee the guys I get paired up with announce they are going to play from the back tees. Then I say I am going to play from the next tees up and all of a sudden they change their minds and join me. For whatever reason that happens a lot to me in Vegas and it never stops being funny.

Vegas is full of people who think they can beat the house, so it doesn't surprise me!

I'll usually play the tips if I'm by myself. But if I get paired up I'll normally just play wherever the others are hitting from. It's just a matter of convenience for me that we're all on the same box. And although I'm pretty introverted, to me, it's a lot easier if you're going to have any kind of conversation.

I am by no means a long hitter but i play at a small club and there aren't that many younger guys who are that long.  I want to take the time to complain about every old timer at my club who will spend all 18 holes commenting on how long I am and asking me "180 par 3 what did you hit a 9 iron?" dude it wasn't funny the first time and then to follow up on every drive i get in the fairway with "I remember when i was as long as you".

sigh...

The day will come for you. When it does you may not say anything because obviously it bothers you when people say it now but..... you will be thinking it. "I remember when i was as long as you".

No it isn't funny.  After scanning it three times and then they have to enter it in manually, it should be free.  It happens way too often.  All this technology is sometimes worthless.

My favorite is a bar has all these beers lined up in their menu.  A lot that you have never had...you finally have to settle for your fourth selection because they didn't have the first three.
