Saw a set of ping eye 2 for sale and want to pick them up. They will be my first set of half way decent clubs. Want to make sure they're the real deal. What do you guys think?

Look alright to me. If you can get their serial numbers, I believe that you can e-mail PING and they will confirm for you.
I noticed that the irons are green dot, which means they are upright lies (2*, I think). However, one club, which appears to be the Pitching Wedge, is a black dot, which means standard lie.

The Ping Eye 2 irons are nearly 35 years old. Do you really think they were being counterfeited in the early 1980's?

He's right make sure you pay attention to the dot color on pings. I made that mistake and I bought green dot (2.25 degrees upright at the time now its only 2 degrees on their new chart). Me being short at 5'7 with long arms I got fitted after and turns out I'm about a degree below standard. I pulled everything left because of this. If you are tall and don't hunch to much over the ball you might be ok. Just do a static wrist to floor measurement and see where you fall in the ping chart that's online as a starting point.

They were not only counterfeited, there were also a lot of looks like in assorted brands and partial copies. Ping was selling for what was then an extra high price so a counterfeit made sense.

By the way, the picture seems to be missing a sand wedge. Back then, sets were sold 3 to S with the 1 and 2 extra.

Some of the "clone" sets weren't half bad if they had a decent shaft back then.
Get the serial numbers and contact Ping if you have any doubts.
How much are they asking?

They're probably real, but you might check.

Under $100 is a good deal.  I bought a set of Karsten 2's around 15 years ago, at a 2nd Swing, for $80+ tax.  They date from 1975, but I thought they were much newer.

Good clubs.

They look genuine but the specs could be all over the place. Also, I'd try to find out if the shafts are all the same and the correct length. If they're a good deal, get them bent to suit you, maybe re-grip, and you're ready to go.

It actually is 4-sw.
Ping pal 2 putter
Ping eye 2 woods 1, 4, 6 (don't care so much about those)

All for $110. Sounds like a deal to me?

And better safe than sorry. Thanks everyone.

Also I'm a green dot according to the ping guide so works out well. I actually wanted ping zing 2's but this came up near me.

So the black dot is the SW?
I can't comment on the price because I'm not local to you, but the woods sound interesting. Ping Eye2 woods were really popular back when I were a lad, and the 6 wood sounds like a winner! You may not want to put them into play, but you should give them a try with decent balls. Also, the PAL2 putter is great, but it might need a bit of lead tape on it.

Yep SW is black dot. Everything else is green.

If I get them I sure will.

Pretty decent deal IMO- that's a solid putter, there's demand for the woods if you don't end up playing them and, most importantly,  green dot irons (assuming they fit you) don't seem to be nearly as common as black or the flatter lies like red or orange.  Good sticks that have a faithful following to this day!

Since there is no dot or + in the cavity they are probably original square grooves which are fine for banging around with buddies but not allowed anymore in tournaments. Not sure how those old square grooves get along with today's balls spin wise

I just sold a set of cavity dot (conforming grooves) 1-L BeCu virtually mint condition for $250.. hard to believe clubs with that much offset were that popular for years..

I've seen my share of Eye 2 clones (My first ever ever set was a PW-4 of Ping Eye 2 clones) but I've never seen a blatant counterfeit Eye 2.

It was a new time for me. Whereas I was used to the same olds and limited choices, seemingly suddenly we were confronted with a plethora of choices. I do recall many " other " brands that were look alikes to Ping putters and clubs. We used to funningly introduce them as close cousins. They seemed to play well enough but if you could afford it, buy the real thing because the difference in cost pays for itself in the long run.

I myself also did not witness and actual identifiable counterfeits but the rumors were rampant and there were some unproven claims. Youth caused me to believe much and be oblivious to contradictory facts. Fun times, as I remember them.

Be prepared to have the lies adjusted. At a minimum have them checked. No telling
how many times these irons have changed hands and the dot color code on them
now may not be what they actually are.

When buying old Ping irons you need to go through the specs, the shafts, shaft
lengths, etc.

I bought a set of S58s a few years ago and the lies and lofts were way off on some
and they had been reshafted a few times and the hosel bored. Had to have all the
shafts pulled and reinstalled correctly.

Thanks for the input everyone. Looks like a fake is unlikely but there are clones.

Yeah I like how well these hold their value. If I ever decide to sell I'll get my money back. More likely they will be a guest set of irons. They might still be if I don't like then more than the single ping zing 2 iron I have. We will see.

As for the lie they have the original grips on them almost in playable condition and very little wear to the club heads. I'm guessing they aren't shifted but I'll have to figure how to check to make sure.

And my buddy picked them up for me today. Excited to go out and hit them.

Oh yes, sure wish I could go back, no doubt.  I especially wish I could take my current golf game back to then, and put it in my teenage body.

It's hard to convey to someone who wasn't around then just how revolutionary and crazy-popular the Ping Eye 2 was back then.  There were all kinds of off-brand clones, and then some of the manufacturers came out with their own versions.  I remember Ram even made sets in BeCu, just like Ping.  I remember when the ULTIMATE golf status symbol was a bag full of Ping BeCu irons.

Back then BeCu did not attract me. I thought they were just simply more expense for the same result and frankly, seeing them work and trying more than a few shots, I thought I was plenty right with stainless. Regardless, it was truly a fact that every man and his brother had a set of eye 2's on the fairways, including the pros. Ping was not sponsoring any pros back then. If they played Pings, they had to buy them and more than a few did. There were a ton of looks likes but you felt a bit sorry for the guys silly enough to buy them. It was a good time to be a golfer because fairways were filling but not yet full.

I love the eye 2's I picked up and re gripped. I don't hit them far but they always go straight. I came across a set of BECU 3-PW yesterday on craigslist and picked them up today. Came with a spare BECU wedge and a Tourselect Beryllium putter for $150. Going to regrip them today and hit the tomorrow. Looking like they will be my main clubs and the stainless as the backup bag.

I think they look way cool compared to the typical stainless.

Check out Goodwill's website, if you are looking for more vintage Ping irons.  I've seen decent sets go for $20 -$30.  The only negative is whoever does the listings, has no clue about golf, so you better hope the photos provide the info you need.  :)

They also describe golf bags as 'carry cases'.  Interesting the person in charge of listing sporting goods, has never heard of the term 'golf bag'.
