Bunkered (Scottish Golf magazine) is reporting on Twitter that Jason Day won't have long time caddie and coach Colin Swatton on the bag this week at the BMW Championship.

Getting popular to have a friend on the bag rather than a recognised caddy.

Well, could be more to the story, prior obligations, etc. but seems odd something like that would come up during the playoff stretch.

If it's even possible, will this make him play even slower as he has to do more of the work getting numbers and assessing conditions for himself?

Will be interesting to see.. I imagine Colin just had to be away for one reason or another, given their history and connection kind of hard to see this being a benign mutual split like we see with other player/caddie pairs all the time.

As noted on other posts given the variety of roles Day's caddy fulfills its incredibly impressive that they have remained intact for so long. Minus this season its been hugely successful as well as being on a continuing upward curve. Gotta wait and see otherwise its pure speculation.

This could very well screw with my PGA tour beer/washroom breaks.  Either JD takes longer and I might have time to add a snack to my beer and washroom break or he speeds up and I might have to pick between beer and washoom.

It is a strange one and it's made stranger by the fact that there has been no official announcement or explanation.

If it was a planned thing, I would guess that they (Day and his agents) would have gotten out ahead of it and said it was't just a one off for whatever reason. The fact that they haven't confirmed anything in spite of being asked for their comment makes me think that they have been caught slightly on the back foot which is why we are having to wait for an explanation...

All JD needs are clothes that fit, and to  stop taking naps before each shot. Then maybe he could play like he used to. Don't think his caddie is the problem.

"He's like an estranged father to me" I can imagine him saying. I think I'd rather have a caddy who was more employee and less Siamese twin.

There's a reason not many swing coaches are also caddies. It's very difficult separating the responsibilities, particularly on the course. Having a coach with you on the course can be a crutch, a distraction from focusing on making shots.

I'm sure there are no interpersonal issues here though. Colin probably wanted less time on the road, and understandably, maybe they could have used a little bit of space from each other, seeing as they spend every waking moment together.

That should guarantee some tears at some point this week during any pressers/post round interviews.

Sorta joking aside, good luck to them. He would have more than enough money from being on Day's bag over the years to live comfortably and maybe lugging a tour bag, standing next to that tour bag, taking another club out of that tour bag, moving closer with the tour bag, further away, closer... gets all the more tiring as one enters middle age.

"I don't agree 100% with your analysis.  Yes, it's nice to hole out, which I did twice during last weeks game, but didn't need either to win those holes or the match.   All that was needed was a tap in to win each hole.  Of course, I was aiming from 20yds and 15yds with the intent to put the ball in the hole, but the expectation was tap-ins." IIRC, Day has said in an interview this year that there would be a time probably in the near future when Swatton wouldn't be able to be his caddy any longer due to age/health and other reasons. Looks like they just got a head start on the process.

This might actually be a good move. Preserve their relationship and let Day take more control of his golf...with something new/different?
They definitely were spending a lot of time together....probably too much.

I have read quotes from lots of pros that when they are on course they focus on making shots and do not think about technique or anything technical. Coaches are for the range, not the course.

I think it will likely be very difficult to preserve anything close to the relationship in the future that these two had together.  Whether the change will workout for Day remains to be seen, but I think he made a mistake. I think his golf related problems have come about from the personal issues he has had to deal with (e.g. mother, etc.), rather than from a souring relationship with Colin Swatton as his caddie.  I think Day will look back on this important matter at some point-in-time and see where he (Day) was the problem, not Swatton.  Jason may have made the worse mistake in his adult life...that affects not only his career, but also a loving and caring member of the family. Not good...

Blah, blah ... pretty sure he and his friend/coach/mentor have a better handle on things than this kind of nonsense.

Day admitted on golf channel that Colin was surprised when he took him off the bag.  Sounds like day, his wife, and agent made the decision.

Looks like another Yoko broke up the Beatles. Dames are undefeated
