Ok so I do not want to get into an argument on jacked up lofts. Just have a basic question. I currently have a set of Ping G15 irons. 4 iron is 23* and 5 iron is 26*. Looking to upgrade to G30's. My question is I hit my 4 iron now average. The G30 5 iron is 24* so basically similar to my 4 now. So Am I right thinking that I should not buy a the G30 set with the 21* 4 iron and just go with a 5-PW? My thinking is if my G15 4 iron is iffy then a G30 4 iron at 21* is going to be even harder to hit than my current 4 iron.

I do not want to pay for a club that I am not really gonna be able to use.

I don't think we can really answer that. It sounds like you have your reservations about the 4i anyway. Why not just get a 22* hybrid that you know you can hit and be happy with it.

The person to ask the question is, yourself.
I understand the reasoning of not spending extra money if you don't have to.  I'm like that myself but, you should also consider the resale value of a short set vs. a traditional set.
Normally the short set is fine with softer shafts because the targeted market is of golfers whom do not have a high swing speed.

To make sense and satisfied your question is to try out the G-30 to see if you like the 4 iron or not and also to confirm on the distance from each of the golf club in the two sets.  Same loft may or may not equal to the same distance and oftentimes same loft does not produce same distance from different sets.

You might hit the 4 iron longer with the same
Loft because it plays a half inch longer.

Save your money, not a lot of diff. from 15s to 30s. G400s are a bit more of an upgrade. ;)

I guess my questions is - I realize in theory the 4 iron should go longer with stronger loft and longer shaft. But I guess what I am asking has anyone had trouble hitting a 20-21 degree iron in one set (whether that is a 3/4 does not matter) then all of a sudden being able to hit a similar lofted club well in the newer set?  I am asking that the Pings are similar clubs. If I cannot hit a G15 3 iron well at 20* and the 4 iron at 23* is hit or miss is there a reason to think that I would be able to hit the G30 4 iron at 21* really well?  I do not see it but wanted to see if anyone had similar experiences and were able to hit the newer, stronger lofted club well.

Same type of shaft and same fit ?   If yes then the answer to your question is obviously "yes".
I had found out the major cause for most of the golfers having difficulty using the low lofted iron is, swing speed.  Without adequate swing speed to elevate the golf shot and producing meaningful distance gap from the shorter golf clubs.
