Not long ago I was a 12.8 trending down with most rounds mid-low 80's. Handicap trending up and currently 14.6. Now, my last four rounds are 104, 85, 103 and 105 and I haven't got a clue. No part of my game is good.

I developed and hook and now trying to correct it ---- game isn't fun when putting up those scores. I wanted to break clubs today. I didn't do it but .........

/or relax, stop keeping score, or stop playing to practice your chipping putting, and smooth easy swings at the range for a bit........

I find a couple weeks off during the season can help me out. You want to look forward to getting out and playing rather then just something you always do.

Do you have a coach?  If so, maybe a tune up is in order?  If not, drink heavily.  Works for me anyway. :drinks:

I am in the same boat. Went out and shot two best rounds ever last week hitting the ball great. go to the range hitting the ball even better. driver was perfect irons crisp went to play yesterday at a VERY tough course in wet conditions struggled and shot 101 and feel like I lost all confidence in one round. I felt lost out there I went in as confident as I could get and just went down hill so quick. Living in Western NY I am unable to take a couple weeks off because .... well thats about how long our golf season lasts but sometimes it feels like im grabbing at nothing.... I have played sports my whole life but by far this game is the most difficult and mental trip ever created.

Had the same issue as you for about a month. I took a week off and someone suggested I change my interlocking grip to an overlapping grip. I tried it and it helped right away.

Another idea...get some blades.  They are reputed to cure cancer and all ills that can befall a golfer.

Went to the range with a friend. It was spur of the moment so used his clubs. Some type of 40 year old titles blades with extra stiff steel shafts.

Best thing about them was,,,stopping. My arms were numb for a day.

Really helped to enjoy my own clubs.

You might try going back to basics.  Check your grip.  Check your setup.  Check your alignment.  Etc... .  It is possible that something very non-standard has crept into your game.  Starting back with the basics should help you find it.  Good luck.

Agree with this 100%.

OP:  Look, I'm someone who actually SHOULD give this game up (my swing cycles from good to horrible from hole-to-hole, sometimes even shot-to-shot, and the geese on the course cover their eyes with their wings when I address the ball), so take my advice with that in mind. But ask yourself:  Are you doing EXACTLY the same thing, in your mind, when you swing well as when you don't? Reason I ask is that I find, when I'm going well (e.g. that third shot on the 7th hole) I tend to think:  "OK, remember what you did on that shot? Now do MORE of it". Better is the enemy of good. Whether it's trying to emphasize what you think caused you to swing well or trying to adopt a video tip to make that good swing great, we fail to recognize how fragile and complicated a golf swing is. Just because, say for example, "pushing away from the ball" works for some people doesn't mean it will make your swing even better. As ThinkPlus implied:  Stick to basics. Ingrain them. Don't try to get even better.

Again, I apologize if you've already thought of this or if it doesn't apply to you, it's just that I've found the temptation to incorporate yet another thought to improve on a good swing (at least before I'm ready) to be a death blow.

Don't break clubs. It's you.

You either need to figure it out, or find a teacher who can help you. Sometimes it's not practicing enough or practicing the wrong things, or maybe unawaringly slipping into a weird habit, but for most of us, most of the time, I think it's a flawed methodology.

I find when I am struggling to just slow everything down. Including and especially my preshot. Double check everything, grip , posture etc.  then try to slow the swing.  doesn't really take that much more time, but I usually find what I have been doing wrong with this. Most time I find what I am doing wrong is in my set up.  Aimed the wrong way, bad grip or posture. Something along those lines.

Agreed. I added one other thing to my pre shot routine: I take a practice swing or two to determine if I know where the bottom is. The ground isn't flat so I'll choke up or down to make sure I am hitting down on the ball. Previously I was often hitting behind the ball and chunking on the way back up. Previously my practice swing was just to swing and hit air. The last 8 games have between 85-93. Way better consistency for me.
