I am from the states and do find it a bit ironic that some take the time to surf and post on a golf forum but complain about a team match play event featuring some of the best players in the world.  Say what you will about money, selections, and pageantry but once the tee is pegged I assure you every player wants to win every match for themselves and their team.  You don't get to the level these players have reached without a competitive drive.  I look forward to seeing some good and spirited matches regardless of total outcome.  Lots of talent on the world side and maybe I'm naive but I would think that the US dominance has them chomping at the bit to show what they can do.  I definitely don't mind watching a few hours of matches before hitting the course!

You can't be serious.  This is the time of the year when pageantry is all that matters. These guys are on parade......look at our wives, girlfriends, custom bags, shoes, clothes and other sundries  None of these guys have a burning desire to win the President's Cup. They lose nothing personally for losing.   Sure there is a thrill, and sure it's fun, but if you offered 1M to any of them to give up their spot, they would take it in a NY minute.

Will the world ever overcome the US dominance at this event?

Only if they change to smaller teams.  That would reduce the depth advantage the US has.

Yes, three sports including golf.

But not dissimilar to you, never as a PGA tour player worth millions of dollars playing in a President's Cup event.

I guess it's just odd to me that you are so confident that the size of their bank accounts somehow eliminates their competitive drive.  I've heard a lot of these guys say things along the lines of 'who cares what the stakes are, I don't want to lose a match/competition to anyone'.   And personally, as a former athlete myself, I'd agree with that sentiment.  I'm can't think of any athletes I personally know, current or former, who aren't very competitive regardless of their financial situation.

Look at the event.  It was created to fill the void between the Ryder Cups and give "other world players" a chance at center stage.

Okay - they want to win, I get it.  But on a quantifiable scale not nearly as much as a regular tour event or major.

This is one of the things that sours me a bit on the President's Cup.  We're constantly messing with the set up trying to make the Internationals more competitive.  Change the umber of available points, change the team size, figure out ways to hide the International's lack of depth.  Maybe we just give them two a side and call it good.

I'm not sure why you say that.  The size of the teams and number of matches is totally arbitrary.  They could have 1000 man teams and the US would win in a landslide due to our advantage in numbers.  The Ryder cup is the same way.

There is nothing magic about a 12 man team.  A two man team would make a dozen countries very competitive but the event would not be entertaining.  A 1000 man team would only make the USA competitive.  If reducing the team size to 10 would make it more competitive, I'm for it.

BTW, I love watching the Presidents Cup.

to promote the game in the potential emerging markets maybe?

Seemed the obvious selection when Robert Allenby declared himself unavailable.

OzMax, Lahiri can play and is based in the US (afaik), if you were looking for an "emerging market" selection, I would have gone with Li Haotong.

I'm not sure it's as easily "quantifiable" as you say it is, but yeah I'll definitely give you that they don't hold it in the same regard as a major!  If you asked DJ / Jordan etc if they'd rather win the Barracuda or go undefeated in PC matches, you might be surprised at the answer.

I think the American Squad dominates because no one cares if they win.

I'm not buying that.

They might care to win on the day, but will they put the necessary time and preparation before the event? It's just an exhibition match at the end of the day, they want to win, but a loss isn't a disaster.

too many Aussies in the international team, we are all renowned chokers, they can't win.

It'll be a great event with a lot of top players.   But no fierce rivalry and passion like the Ryder Cup.

I love watching the President's cup.  The format is better than the Ryder Cup.

I'll be watching almost all of it.

Maybe that passion and fierce rivalry will come about some day.  It took the Ryder cup a few decades before it developed that passion.

The International team have one tie and one win from 11 matches. At the moment, it's a bit like the Ryder Cup when it was US vs GB&I, the International team need to start winning to make it more interesting for the neutral.

Let's just cut through the muck!

Both Squads need motivation.

If they attached a money prize to the event you would see passion, energy and a drive to win by all players.  This playing for country in a "global economy" has no substance.
