... at a member/guest tournament at the Olympic Club no less!

The round - 5 birdies, 3 bogies, 1 bad shot (topped hybrid on a par 5), 13 FIRs, 14 GIRs, guessing 26 putts, 34/35 (par 71). The setup was with shorter tees (blue) at the Olympic Club Ocean course, tournament conditions for the member guest so I had to putt everything out. As you'd expect, all aspects were on - driver, irons, putter, wedges, relaxed mentally. I missed 1 FIR, but got it on the green from a fw bunker and 2 putted for a par. No real missed opportunities other than that topped par 5 shot. My last putt was a downhill, slightly hooking 4' putt which I knew was for 69 and I put it center cup. Such an awesome feeling!

Some background - I've been hovering around 4.2-5.3 the last 2 yrs, normally have no problems with driver (~10-11 FIRs), confident with putter/wedges, but my scoring usually depends on my irons and GIRs that day. Typically I'll hit between 9-10, which seems too low. I took a series of lessons earlier this year to rebuild my swing, with the goal of improving ball striking and hopefully be able to produce a draw/fade on command. It was brutal as my coach and I were essentially looking to do the opposite on most of the major fundamentals and movements. My swing is homegrown when I started playing around my mid-20's, built for consistency and a fade back (after a traumatic "Year of Snaphooks"). I'm built like KJ Choi, so it's not like I have tons of options for long, syrupy, wide arc'd PGA swings.

I actually stated breaking 70 as a goal this year, which is funny as I don't think I've really set targets until the last 2 years, just played and looked to improve. It's a work in progress, still building the muscle memory, but my ball striking is steadily improving. It was amazing how I was able to play the entire day "in the moment", just point and shoot really with a song stuck in my head. Just don't ask what I shot the next round. hahaha

PS* - had to buy a new bag from O-club to mark the occasion! When in doubt, buy new stuff. ;)

I've been running the Atomic Blonde soundtrack on Spotify: https://open.spotify...IohkarnV1HcHY0P

I putt the best when I'm making a read and just in my routine (line up, 2 practice strokes, look at hole and fire) with a song in my head. No mechanics whatsoever. On the other hand, my irons get more methodical and I'm thinking of something mechanical (release or takeaway). That day, I was just pointing and shooting, with the song stuck in my head. Basically, just getting out of my own way.

I'll have to check them out when I get home. This past weekend I was singing rave on in my head. And sometimes out loud haha. It does make you a little more relaxed I found.

Yah, it was fantastic. Definitely had a toast with my friend who is the member there to celebrate. We have had good battles but unfortunately, he had a slightly injured knee that day.

The ball and card are saved and going with my hole in 1 ball!
