Walmart commercials.  Seriously.

The last Walmart commercial I saw featured a song by The Who.  I remember when the song came out and how radical it was.  Now it's being used to sell stuff at Walmart.

This made me feel old. Our club has become the home course to our high school's golf team. I am standing on the practice green chatting with some of the high schoolers and the topic of golf equipment comes up. Long story short, I had to explain to them the difference between a persimmon wood and a laminated wood as well as the terms balata and surlyn. At least a few of them had heard of blades/muscle-backed irons. Niblick? No chance.

I feel old after 18 holes and then sitting down for lunch.  Rigor mortis sets in and I can't feel my legs - have to limp to the car to get home.

The bathroom mirror at any course usually quickly reminds me. Out on the course it is usually knowing some points on the course I used to be able to reach with a drive that are no longer reachable for me.
I'm with you on that issue. I've been at my club for 35 years and I'm playing five irons from where i used to play eight irons.

Broke out Trackman and hit some with my old Tommy Armour persimmon driver. Still feels good but goes about as far as a good three wood. Carry was around 240 + a couple and roll out about 250. Looked really small. Missed shots about 225 total.

I'm guessing you are talking about the real persimmons but I always thought that the TOMMY ARMOUR 845 FORGED PERSIMMON DRIVER had one of the best finishes ever for a driver, kind of deep translucent rootbeer colored crown... still have one in my closet just because I love the look lol.

Speaking of old entertainment....So I am looking at the guide on my television the other day and Private Benjamin and Risky Business are playing back to back.  1980 and 1983. And it struck me that those two movies came out longer ago than the gap between my sophomore year of high school and Gone with the Wind.

Not sure how to say this and I don't know why it affects me but I feel old when nobody stops me from putting a small cooler with six beers into the back of the cart. I used to sneak in a couple of beers in my bag but now I just bring a cooler and flaunt the rules. I think when you're this age nobody is going to bother you about it.

My partner and I enjoy splitting the six pack but I think I enjoyed it more when I had to sneak them in and felt like I had gotten away with something.

That's awesome Shank!  What a blessing.

I though you were going to say something about when the Husker football team was a dominant program.  Oops...too soon?

Truly is a blessing DP. And we are doubly blessed as our daughter had a little boy two weeks ago. He doesn’t wear me out quite the same way! It was a very good Thanksgiving for us as we got to spend time with both the little ones.

As for the Huskers, well, if you remember when they were truly dominant, then it is a given you are old. And I remember!

Thanks again DP, hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving and have a great holiday season.

I can relate to most of the posts in this thread, to say the least. But at age 71 (soon to be 72), the most obvious issue for me is how much distance I've lost. I've always been a pretty good player (and still have a 4.2 index), but I've lost at least 30 to 40 yards off the tee. 30 years ago I could count on drives in the 260-270 range, where now I'm happy if I can hit 230. But I'm not complaining...I've shot my age 16 times so far, and plan on doing it many more. After all, getting old beats the alternative!

This topic made me think of one of my favorite Erk Russell stories. For those of you who don't know, Erk Russell was the long-time defensive coordinator at the University of Georgia who left after the 1980 national championship season to go start the football program at 1-AA Georgia Southern. He won three 1-AA national championships before retiring at the end of the 1989 season. He was a true leader of men in a way you don't normally see outside the military & one of the most beloved sports icons of all time in Georgia.

He was asked why he decided to retire in 1989 & said the following:

"Early in my career, I would be sitting in a recruit's living room and his mother would be real pretty, and I would say to myself...I've got to get this kid, his Mama sure is pretty. Then at the end of my career, I would be sitting in a recruit's living room and his grandma would be looking real pretty and I would say to myself...I got to get this kid, his grandma sure is pretty. That's when I knew I needed to retire!"
