This past Saturday the course was packed and it was hot. Along comes the cart girl and we are chatting away when something occurs to me. I have known her since she was knee high to a grasshopper.

Now before any of you clowns start going down the "Med was hitting on the cart drink gal" pathway, let me assure you:

1. It was too hot to be flirting around.

2. When I am at least old enough to be the gal's father older brother, there is no way it is anything but a professional transaction.

But man did I feel old.

I had her tell the folks I said hey and each time throughout the round she came by I purchased another drink and gave her a nice tip; was really proud of her - going to nursing school! Funny thing - been a few years since I had seen her and, with her glasses on, no way did I recognize her.

Like I said, the whole running into the fully grown kid you knew long ago - humbling.

What else has made you feel old at the course? This should be both interesting and entertaining.

When I was chatting with the 70-year-old playing partner about the joys of hitting persimmon and balata, and neither of the other two people with us had a clue what we were talking about.

Going back years later to the club I played at as a junior and seeing all the saplings they planted back then now grown into mature trees.

OK, that second one is a bit of an exaggeration as I'm not that old, but I was surprised to see how much they had grown in 20+ years.

My son bought me a beer for the first time recently. That made me feel old for some reason. Now if I could get him to pay for our golf when we play together then I wouldn't mind as much feeling old.

Same for myself.  Wasn't long ago that I was having the same conversation with a fellow member my age and the lads in the shop were dumbfounded.

My wife and i were paired with a younger couple....never thought much about it. On the 10th tee,she says..in wonderment..." Your truck is older then she is"
I started to tell her it wasn't in as good a shape as the young lady was,but thought better !

When I'm paying for something and people keep'asking if I'm over 60.

Damn, I must look as old as I feel since I've got at least a few years till then.

But I think I'll just start saying yes.

Brought in my long irons for reshafting a few weeks ago. The fitter is a super nice guy, friendly and professional.
He commented that he hadn't seen a nice set of 845's for a long time Asked me when they came out.
Didn't take long to realize both he and the irons were about the same age.

I felt sooooo vintage.

I'm still shy of 40, but... getting called 'sir' by a younger woman... it gets to me.  Cart girls?  Bartenders?  My daughter's teachers?

They call me 'sir' and it's like I'm being punched in the gut.

On the course, if I get paired with some of the young kids out at the club and they start talking about how they were born in 1997... I automatically want to go jump in the pond.  That's the year I graduated high school... which, to me, was just last year.  Then I have that realization that 20 years has passed and, well...

jeez, what's the point of the question?  getting out of bed in the morning makes me feel old.   in fact, going to pee all night long makes me feel old.  limping down the stairs and my kid asking me why i'm walking down the stairs like that.  what doesn't make me feel old?  i lost my train of thought.  what were we talking about again?

The bathroom mirror at any course usually quickly reminds me. Out on the course it is usually knowing some points on the course I used to be able to reach with a drive that are no longer reachable for me.

Not having to get up and go to work anymore sometimes makes me feel old.

Although most of the time it just makes me feel damn lucky!

An then there's the pee thing.............

When you realize watching the news at night, that you are tuned into the channel that has news on at 9:00 pm.

The pee thing isn't an issue at midnight, or at 3:30, or again at 5:00 when I finally give up trying to sleep, or 30 seconds after the first cup of coffee, ect........

Seeing a hot young lady and immediately wondering if she goes to the same college as my oldest son.

Planning my workouts and weekend around the the number of days of soreness I'll feel after.

I'm having too many work discussions about retirement plans.

Haven't played enough for anything on-course to make me feel old.  What does it for me is seeing the golfers I watched when I first started playing getting older.  Sergio and Geoff Ogilvy with the gray beards, Tiger, etc.  I see those guys, and I'm like "Geez, when did that happen?"

When I hook up with a couple of flat bellies and then one of them says, "it's my birthday todays" and i say, "how old" and he says "24" and I say "I got under ware older than that" - I think I'm wearing them now".........Get some real funny looks from the young guns, but the older playing partner just smiles and nods........... :swoon:

when you are on the course with your kid and you go to pee and his sounds like a fire hydrant and you are still waiting to dribble start.
and then the wind blows your dribble onto your shoes to rub it in.

This! In the mid 90's a bunch of courses were built around Vancouver, that had wee little saplings tied to stakes. Go back 20-25 years later and they've turned some courses into these rubbish manufactured, park like settings you'd expect to find in the green space of a housing estate or business park.

Ha! Were they talking about the music, or your 1996 Honda Civic? JK. JK. High Schoolers have that way don't they, at least those kid's parents introduced them to your music so they even knew it was OLD SCHOOL!
