Three distinct classifications are presenting themselves:
1. "The Finder"...can't resist pocketing them whether or not they're actually searching for their ball in the woods or hazards. Wind up with a garage full of balls you'd never play unless threatened.
2. "The Bulker"....AAAA or AAAAA or even New but not in sleeve stash. 5 or 20 gallon paint buckets everywhere. When this transitions to using contractor grade trash bags, intervention is required.
3. "The NIB"...."new in box". Neatly stacked dozen or bonus sleeve dozen manufacturer boxes usually stacked by color/brand. Is usually accompanied by a serious GG/DSG coupon habit or has an extensive Watch List on eBay.

Further study recommended if someone can blend in multiple categories. I personally think that once someone has got to NIB, there's no turning back. I'm saying this based on a friend of mine. Not me.

I belong to all 3 categories.  I don't lose many golf balls but see plenty as I walk the course most of the time.  Even though I spend plenty of time on the course range, I have my own private range (hay field/cow pasture) that adjoins my property.  Always need hit and forget balls as I don't often retrieve them from the field of patties.

When I score a great deal of new/bulk, I must display in clear tupperware style containers....it just brightens my day seeing them there.

As to NIB, when you see a great deal, you've got to go for it.  I still have 3 dozen of the Woot Lethals among my considerable new in box stash.

I will admit that I often give away many of my stash to people learning to play....saves them money and frees up room to....you guessed it, bring in more golf balls.  LOL.

I thought I kicked the habit but I just counted 21 dozen on my shelf.

4 dozen Zstar, 4 dozen Prov1x, 4 dozen Ksig, 2 dozen Chrome soft x, 3 dozen B330S, 2 dozen U6, 1 dozen SR5, 1 dozen TPX.

I need to settle on a single ball. The worst part is trying to guess which ball will be the best one for the conditions of the day [as if I would know that] lol.
just curious SR5?  I am familiar with SR1/2/3 but not 5

Oops. I meant SR3.
Darn was hoping for SR2 and a potential trade. :)

I did a ball count the other day:

ProV1x: 43 dozen

ProV1: 19.5 dozen

Chrome Soft: 2.5 dozen

Mid-Price: 9 dozen

Winter: 6 dozen

Range: 8 dozen

I didn't pay for any of them. A lotta golf balls lost on my home course, and none of these were retrieved from the water. :-)

But my days of looking for golf balls is over. I think I have enough for a while.

I am poised at a crossroads, currently I have 7 doz. Pro V1x and 7 doz. AVX (yellow). Not sure which direction I will choose as 2018 unfolds but that’s about an eight month supply of each.
Everything has its drawbacks, as the man said when his mother-in-law died, and they came down upon him for the funeral expenses.

I suppose that to determine if an individual is truly a "hoarder" - the pace at which they lose golf balls is a factor.  If a single digit h/c that loses one ball or less per round has a stash of scores of dozens of balls, then perhaps yes, a hoarder.  The guy who is practically teeing up a new ball every hole needs a deep stash.

There's a part of me that wonders if I'd lose fewer balls if I kept fewer on hand.
It works the opposite for me. When I only had 2 dozen balls at home, I would lose a few every round. Now that I have 8 dozen, I only lose a ball every few rounds. Not a lot water where I play.
