I couldn't hit a ball 300+ yards unless I teed up a Pinnacle on a downhill, downwind hole with a baked-dry fairway and a large fan blowing behind me.

I'd like for the OP to point to the multitude of posts he is referring to. To me this is the same as the threads that bash Johnny Miller for talking about his 63 all the time. Neither actually happens often, if at all.

Totally! Nice reference to the Johnny Miller thing. I've actually never heard him mention it while covering an event. But he gets accused of doing it in every thread about him

Tournaments are delayed by a few seconds in Canada when Miller is announcing...in case he mentions his 63.

I have heard him mention it about 10-15 times.

From browsing the forums here and Facebook comment sections I can conclude that most golfers drive the ball far in excess of 300 yards and can easily carry mid irons 200 yards under normal conditions.  My question is this:  How does one who hits it such distances avoid leaving themselves half wedges into most of the par 4's?  Take a "normal" length par 4 of 400 or so yards.  If you hit it 330 off the tee (which seems well within the capacity of lots of posters here) you are left with approximately 70 yards.  Now for a guy who hits it 330 off the tee it seems highly unlikely that will be anywhere near a full swing with even the highest lofted wedge.  I'm guessing that if you drive it 330 with a swing speed in the 120ish range your 150 club is some sort of wedge.  Even if it's the lowest lofted wedge in your bag, let's say a PW at 46ish degrees, that means your next wedge is in the 50-52 degree range at 140ish, sand wedge at 130ish, lob wedge at 120ish.  Do you play on courses much longer than most?  Do you hit an iron off the tee on par 4's shorter than 450?  Do you just swing harder and drive the green so you don't have to hit a half wedge?

I'd gladly take a half wedge into every green... bet you would to.

Unlike the op and others I never have seen the posts on wrx where guys say they hit it 350.

I do however see a ton of posts that imply they could if they played the tours hard fairways. :)

Saturday I walked 18 alone and had some time so I noted all drives and 3W with GPS that I find pretty accurate on that course.   Flat course not much wind, didn't seem to get much roll out, almost none. Not hitting it particularly well.  I averaged about 230 with the driver.  That includes two low heel strikes that went about 190 total.

3W averaged about 210 and one I really caught rolled out to 240.

I know I should be playing the "forward" tees but I enjoy courses up to about 6500 yds.

Here's the funny thing.  I have played with guys that legitimately fly it 300.  Very impressive.  But most I play with I'm as long or longer.  They claim much longer averages than I just documented.  Human nature.

I'm tempted to do a speed stick training program.  It's fun to hit it long.

It was a great round regardless of score.  This was looking west from the 17th tee box.  Good times.

Edited:  To fix picture.  Thanks PhotoBucket!  Moved to imgur.com.

I occasionally play with a gentleman (member on this forum), who could play 6800 with 4-iron on down and shoot in the 70s. I play a lot of golf and never seen anyone hit a ball as far as he does. I've seen him hit a 5 wood 300+ and a weakened MB 8-iron 185 (all his iron lofts are "weak"). On one 350 yard hole, slightly up hill, into the wind he hit his tee shot 10 yards in front of the green...on the fly. If there wasn't a hill in front of the green he would have bounced on. He hits it so far and so high his shafts are made out of rebar. If he could play more than 9 holes a week he would be a very accomplished golfer indeed. It's fun watching him hit a golf ball...and he is in his 40s and told me he has lost club head speed. lol

So yeah, there are guys out there who can really smoke the ball.

Back in the 70's and 80's a good number of men with mustaches wearing Jovan Musk said they could bench press 350.

Same idea, basically.

I drive on average 260-270.

A couple weeks ago on a short 510 yard par 5 I drove the down hill for 135 yards in.  Bomb of a drive, longest I've ever had.  The members I was playing with had never seen anyone there before.

I proceeded to chunk the heck out of my 9i leaving a short 35 yard pitch in the rough next to a bunker.

So to answer your question, yes, I did end up leaving a 1/2 wedge into the green.

Only time I get 300+ is when the course gets really firm and actually rolls 30 yards or so.

This isnt only a forum problem, i have actually played tournaments and had players boast how far they hit it, but hit it no where near as far

i genuinely think some people dont have a clue about distances.

Case in point being a fellow player in a tournament saying he hits his 5 wood all the time because it goes about 240 yds, he was about 70 yds out, the ones he flushed went about 180 - 190

Yeah, the speed to hit it 325+ is not something common by any stretch of the imagination. It takes very good mechanics and sort of a freak of nature physically.

A lot of posers on here for sure.

I'm almost 60. I now drive it about 200 - 220. I should probably be kicked off of WRX.

Driving it 350 is cool and all but how bout that 5 footer he misses for par?

I've seen a bunch of people pound the ball, all were terrible putters.

Guy I played with once, took him 2 shots to go 600 yards, another 4 to go 20 feet.

Short game > Long drives

I'll never understand the fascination with Driver numbers.

Nah long drives are just as important. I played with two randoms this weekend that suffered due to their lack of distance. Sure they could get up and down pretty well but not nearly enough to anywhere make up for their lack of distance.

What kind of courses are you playing that you have never seen a player that can hit the ball far and putt well? It's a fun thing to witness.

I hit it 350 plenty. First, I hit it about 235 and then I hit it 115.

My theory is you're drawing the wrong conclusion, based on wrong or insufficient data. That's my theory and I'm sticking to it. :-)

Unrelated to the thread... but nice shoes.
