From browsing the forums here and Facebook comment sections I can conclude that most golfers drive the ball far in excess of 300 yards and can easily carry mid irons 200 yards under normal conditions.  My question is this:  How does one who hits it such distances avoid leaving themselves half wedges into most of the par 4's?  Take a "normal" length par 4 of 400 or so yards.  If you hit it 330 off the tee (which seems well within the capacity of lots of posters here) you are left with approximately 70 yards.  Now for a guy who hits it 330 off the tee it seems highly unlikely that will be anywhere near a full swing with even the highest lofted wedge.  I'm guessing that if you drive it 330 with a swing speed in the 120ish range your 150 club is some sort of wedge.  Even if it's the lowest lofted wedge in your bag, let's say a PW at 46ish degrees, that means your next wedge is in the 50-52 degree range at 140ish, sand wedge at 130ish, lob wedge at 120ish.  Do you play on courses much longer than most?  Do you hit an iron off the tee on par 4's shorter than 450?  Do you just swing harder and drive the green so you don't have to hit a half wedge?

350 against the wind, 425 with. The is wrx after all. Just kidding.

My best drives carry about 240-250 and sometimes rollout to about 280. I play a 7 iron to about 160-165.

As long as we have this forum this thread will keep popping up, I only have a few things to say:

1. Most people on this site aren't claiming prodigious distances.

2. We do have some members who really pound it and who have proven it time and time again through swing videos and trackman data.

3. Yes, we have some dolts saying stupid stuff sometimes too, but they're hardly the majority.

Really not entertaining at all........These kind of threads are really getting boring.......Try coming up with something either accurate or at least a tiny bit clever.

It's a legitimate question... I didn't realize that it had been discussed in great detail.  As you can see I don't post much in the forums.  It just seems like the average driving distance of an internet-user is far beyond what I see from day to day.  I understand there are people that can hit it that far, but they are extremely rare.  If this topic doesn't interest you then why read it and reply?  Do I just play at a course where the shortest hitters on the planet play?

The median drive for the average golfer is 219.55 yards. Yes, there are a few "how far do you hit it threads" and yes it seems a disproportionate number of members hit it a long way. Some are legit, some are not. I am not quite sure what those who exaggerate get out of that. Approval from a bunch of people they don't know? Kinda pathetic really.

My theory is you're drawing the wrong conclusion, based on wrong or insufficient data. That's my theory and I'm sticking to it. :-)

I think it's a couple of things.

1. Through the anonymity of the internet, you can claim anything you want to.

2. A lot of people don't have a realistic idea of how far they hit it. I have a buddy who consistently guesses his drives at 280 and my drives at 340. In reality I'm 300 and he's 240 lol.

3. Folks claim their all time longest drive as their new yardage. It's like shooting 71 once and claiming you're a +1.

4. Some people aren't lying and really do hit it as far as they say they do.

Hitting the ball 300 w/ accuracy and consistency is the real kicker though. It isn't impossible, but realistically - for an amateur to consistently hit it past 300 and in the short grass isn't the norm. At my club, I'd say there's a 8-10 golfers out of hundreds who have that ability.

That being said, "how far do you hit it?" in golf is the same as "how much do you bench?" at the gym. It's the long dick measuring formula.

They actually aren't that rare. I knew plenty of high school kids that regularly go 300+.

Something else to keep in mind is that golfwrx isn't populated by the average golfer, golfwrx is populated by the golf obsessed who prioritize the game and play it reasonably well. I'd say our regularly posting membership has far more people who regularly shoot under 90 than over, where what, maybe 25% of the general golfing public shoots under 90? For this reason, as a whole, golfwrx is going to have more higher swing speed players than the general public.

Again, this isn't to say that "everyone here hits it 350", but most of the regular posting members hit it further than the 220 average stated above.

To answer your question, we carry 4 wedges for a reason. Also we have learned to hit a finesse shot or as you so crudely put it a half wedge.

Get a wedge chart bro. Also using talc powder adds to your drives as well as deadlifts.

;)

P.s. ; serious about the wedge chart though they are helpful, the rest not so much.

Yes, 99% of them slept at a Holiday Inn Express last night.  Most of it is just that, internet blah, blah, blah.  I have played with some of these characters at Table Rock and 300 yard drives?  Not a chance!

I'd like for the OP to point to the multitude of posts he is referring to. To me this is the same as the threads that bash Johnny Miller for talking about his 63 all the time. Neither actually happens often, if at all.

I have a friend who carries his drives 340 and gets no rollout whatsoever. Anyway, I've played a lot of golf with a lot of people and I've never seen a human being hit a golf ball like he does. Not even close.

It's not so much on the forums, although there are some.  I'm referring mostly to replies on the GolfWRX facebook page posts.  The one in particular that sparked this thread was a video of Justin Thomas hitting a 190 yard 9 iron at the PGA.  This post in particular was from PGA.com, but the same happens everywhere.  My question is are there that many people out there that legitimately hit it that far, because I hit it no where near that and yet at my local club I hit it past the majority of people.  I have, in the past, driven it in the neighborhood of 350ish par 4's but I was only responsible for, at most, 275 of that with the rest coming from elevation, rock hard fairways, hurricane force winds, etc.  If you legit hit it that far how do you manage that length?  There's no way you can pull driver on all the 4's and 5's and swing away... or do you, I don't know... that's why I'm asking.

LeftDaddy...  That's who my question is directed at... does he hit lots of hybrids and irons off the tee or does he just bomb it every time and just hit half wedges all day?

350 against the wind, 425 with. The is wrx after all. Just kidding.

My best drives carry about 240-250 and sometimes rollout to about 280. I play a 7 iron to about 160-165.

This is me as well.  I can roll in out to 300 if I lay on a really good swing with low spin.  I do hit up on the driver a good bit.  7 iron is 162 carry, 34 degree loft.
