Two times so far. I've been working hard on my game and have taken my index down from an 8 a little over two years ago to a 1.5 at the latest revision.

The first time I shot under par I was -3 on the 17th tee, an easy par three. Thinking I had a round in the 60s in my future I proceeded to one-arm finish a 6-iron, barely get on the green, and three-jack from 50 feet away. Then I three-putt bogeyed the final hole to shoot 71. A few weeks later I was a little more composed and shot a -2 70.

Great ballstriking has been the path to the low rounds. Each time I was really in control of my distances and was putting well enough to take advantage of hole-high approach shots and reaching the par fives in two.

9 hcp right now.  Best score 76 +5.  I lack birdies as well - best rounds have a couple birdies and no "doubles".   As stated before - seems like when the up and down game is on/putting.. the scores follow.

I have shot even a couple of times, short game is key for me.  Fairway, around the green and get up and down. Hit some greens and make some putts......hope I make as many birdies as bogeys.  Generally shoot 75-80.

I've shot even or better for nine hole lots of times. I've only been able to keep it going for all 18 once, shot -1 71 from the regular men's tees, to date it's my best round ever by 4 shots.

PS, after I shot 71 I failed to break 90 the next 3 rounds.

Sorry, I didn't say what I think it takes.

Passable long game, nothing special, limit mistakes, and you need to be pretty sharp within 25 yards.

Almost had an even par round on Saturday until I three-putted the last hole from ~45 feet when I left my first putt about 8 feet short.

I'd like to blame the inconsistent green speeds and my playing partners all blasting their putts way past the hole, but I'll admit to some nerves. Shooting par or under is still new to me since my lowest score before this year was a 75 (July 2016).

One thing that really encouraged me was that I didn't really have my best swing that day. On the range before the round I was hitting a sweeping 5-7 yard draw, so I just accepted it and aimed accordingly. I hit fairways and greens, took advantage of a few birdie opportunities, and scrambled when I had to.

My best was a +3 (73).

It was in a team match play comp, where I essentially had to make every putt (partner struggled). I probably could have shot 72, but i was on a Par 3, trying to make a bird, to win a hole. Blew it 5 feet past and missed the par. If I was playing stroke play, I play it a little more conservatively.

I had a 74 and a couple 77's. That 74 had 3 birdies in the round, and 2 double bogeys. That 73 had 15 pars and 3 bogeys. All kinds of way to shoot a low score I guess.

I have been able to crack the Par barrier about 8 times. Those are usually the rounds that you feel like you cant do anything wrong and a couple where you were the up and down king with a couple of lucky breaks. That is the peaks and valleys of this game.

I've finished +4 a handful of times, as soon as I realize I've got a good shot at beating my Personal Best I screw it up lol. Mentally weak would be generous.

Never shot even par.  Best score prior to this past weekend was a 74.  Shot a 4 under 68 on Sunday.  All of the stars were aligned that day.  Started with a birdie from 76 yards on the first hole after a terrible fairway bunker shot.  That was the only fairway I missed all day, and only missed 2 greens in regulation.  Putts were falling, chips were tight.  Might just end my golf career on that note.

Par 72 too many times to recall, but not weekly, and 68 is my lowest.  Even par and sub par on front 9 or back 9, lots.  I keep score, but don't pay attention to score till walking off 18, unless $$$ is on the line, then I know exactly where I am at.  Never shot par when gambling.

Golf advice sounds so obvious most of the times.....you wanna clean up your game.

How great of a shot can you make?....this will show your potential to go low by hitting scoring beauties    BUT also...

Can you stay away from ugly shots?....this will keep you from shooting bogeys and make pars easily

Its obvious to say get better at both these....be able to hit beauties but stay away from uglies too!

Does par over 9 holes count or does it have to be 18? I've done par over 9 holes twice but 76 is my best over 18.

I shot my first round under par this past Sunday in singles match play at my clubs Ryder Cup Tournament. I've only been playing golf since last May, so I'm pretty pumped. I hover between a 2.5 and a 5 depending on how I'm putting.

After I closed out my match on hole 15, we all decided to keep playing the last 3 holes since everyone was playing pretty well and we were putting everything out all day anyways. I birdied 16 to get back to even par, par on 17, and had a chance on 18 to get under par.

Par 4 around 400 yards, elevated tee, with a slight dogleg right. Setup to hit a cut and pulled it left instead. I was behind the first tee box and the pro shop was right in front of me. We could t see the green at all but knew it was directly behind the pro shop from that angle. Me and my partner I was riding with estimated 135 to the center of the green. I said screw it and decided to go over the pro shop, 10 yards in front of me, instead of chipping out. There were about 12-15 guys sitting around the green waiting for the matches to be done. I hit the shot just thinking to myself not to catch it thin and hit the glass windows at the pro shop. We heard everyone cheering after I hit. I walk up to see my ball in the center of the green 15 ft below the hole! I couldn't believe it. The guys were all freaking out saying they didn't know where I was but just saw a ball coming over the building haha I stepped up and drained the 15 footer for a 1 under 70. My adrenaline was pumping.

Things like that remind me why I play this frustrating game! Hope to ride this momentum as I have qualifying for the PA Mid-Am at the beginning of next month.

Well, I shot a 4 over 74 on Thursday.....with 3 3-putt bogeys.  I have the skills..  I just need some luck on my side and to fix my putting.

Anyone else have an awkward tee shot they can't seem to figure out?  There is a hole on my home course that I just haven't figured out how to play.

Posted Image

This hole gets me all the time.  There are large pines blocking the tee shot, then if you lay it back to the wide open area....you have to contend with a tree in the fairway from 180-200 to a very long but narrow green.

Posted Image

I've tried it all and generally resort to hitting my drive at the tree in the fwy and hoping I get lucky and don't get a bad kick off a tree.

I encountered a similar type 390yd dog-leg right hole with a huge tree in the middle.  Player could hit driver left of the tree, but that leaves a really long shot in as you're hitting away from the hole and bounces can be ugly.  So, I hit 2i at the right side of tree with a cut, bounce and some run leaves long to mid iron in depending on wind.

At my best, was probably around a 4 or so, shot under par quite a few times at my home course when I was young. Best round a 66 (-4).

I was remarkably inconsistent with no middle ground, could manage a 73/74 or an 86/87 in equal measures. I needed constant practice/play in order to keep my game grooved, it could go sideways quickly.

Had trouble bringing it on the road, best round away were E's and +1's.

My best the past few years has been a 76. All-around game is not sharp enough to make it thru the whole 18 without a few hiccups.

I got as low as a 4.3 index but never shot par or better.  My home course is very difficult and even scratch golfers don't often shoot par or better on it.  The scratch guys are usually one or two over.   1.7 is my lowest differential on a round.

I shot under par for 9 holes today for the first time ever! It was also my second best score ever of 35/42 for 77 for 18 holes. One off my personal best :)

If we're only talking for 9 holes I've done that plenty.  Never for 18 though.

Best round I ever played was -2 through 15 playing a scratch player in matchplay and lost 4 down 3 to play so didnt get to finish.

I have shot +1 once and +2 a couple of other times. Was +1 on 18 2 saturdays ago -2 for the back 9 and trippled the last. My handicap is sitting at 6.7.

Did have a nett 60 a couple of years ago after shooting 78 off an 18 handicap but thats probably a whole other discussion.

I was staying around a 3 HC and it was established from the tips and playing it down at my tough home course.  Three of the below par rounds came playing with friends outside of my normal group who played from closer tees.  Even then I did not make a lot of birdies so going really low was not going to happen.  I have never shot more than 2 under.

when i had my career low 3 hdcp i shot numerous under par scores for 9 holes but seldom could convert it to under par for 18..

my typical scores would be 35-39,33-40.33-39. 40-35......

i did have a personal best of 69 but that was with 7 birdies..

being only a weekend golfer i could never achieve the consistency needed to have many 18-hole under par scores but that's ok..

My best playing days were from 2002-2005. Probably broke par 50 times during that span. Lots of -1 and -2 rounds. Shot my personal best (66) in round 2 of a 2 round tourney, made 9 birdies that day. Ive5had several rounds at 67 and 68 and a bunch of 69. My favorite round ever was in 2005. Shot -3 in local qualifying for the U.S. Open to make sectionals. My least favorite round was probably round 2 of U.S. Am qualifying in 2005. Shot 67 in round 1 and backed it up with 75 to miss out by a shot.

I basically gave up the game after the summer of 2005 to pursue better career options. Son was born 3 years ago and I want to teach him the game so I got back to playing. Haven't broken par in a while but I'm always around 75/76 now. Lowest round of the year is 73 and bogeyed 2 easy par 5s in that round. Best 9 of the year is 34. I just don't have the time to practice like I did in early 2000s.

The secret to breaking par is to be extremely consistent, not take many risks, and get up and down nearly every time you miss a green or are greenside in 2 on a par 5 - but more importantly it's practice. In my better playing days I would spend hours chipping and putting. I had a shag bag with about 50 pro v1x balls and I'd go to a certain course that had a chipping green on the end of the driving range tee. I was able to hit 80 yd and under shots into that green a ton so my wedge game was stellar. I'd hit bunker shots for a couple of hours a weekend. I played a bunch. I hit balls for about 10 hours per week. I took lessons about once every 6 weeks. I played tournaments. Anything I could do to practice and play, I'd do it. If I was a better course manager back then I would have put a 63 or 64 on the board. I took too many risks back then. I had a lot of Phil in my game...if I thought I could.pull off the shot then I'd try it rather than playing safer or relying on my wedge game.

I shot par (72) for my first time this year. (8th year of playing golf)

Had a chance to shot -1 but missed the eagle. :)

I think it's more mental. Between the ears will screw a round up in a hurry.

You know how to swing, chip, putt, etc. but believing and not being afraid to shoot low is where it matters.

The thing is "knowing how to swing, chip, etc" isn't an easy thing to do. Guys who make contact know how to swing. Being aware of the clubface is a better way to state "how to do it". A lot of guys can hit it and chase it. Not many guys know exactly what the clubface is doing through the golfswing.
