On the hunt for some new irons...had a fitting at golftec and we tried a variety of shaft and head combinations. I think I have nailed down the Nippon gh950 regular  as my next shaft. I Had the strongest performance with the jpx hotmetal head, though I had hoped a forged jpx model would be the right fit. I may end up going for the hotmetal head as it felt good...not like true forged irons do, but the numbers were good for my profile.

Before I commit to purchasing or building a new set I thought I would try to fully exhaust my non-Mizuno options. I wondered if anyone had experience with a game improvement iron which was forged yet forgiving. JDM irons are generally beautiful so I'm seeking suggestions from this genre.

Thanks

Mark

I know this will sound bias because I own these Irons but the OnOff Kuro 2015 version are fantastic and you can probably grab a set on Ebay or Rakuten.  That said the Mizuno Hot Metal and Forged 900 are nice. The other option you need to check out is the Srixon Z565 .

Do you have a budget in mind?

Got a set of Epon AF-302 a few weeks back and they're an absolute joy.  I've never felt anything come off the face as nicely as these irons and have played MP4s, 690.CB, 2013 X-Forged, to name a few.  They're not GI, but aren't really tough to hit.  They have a wider sole than most Player CBs, and you only really lose 10 yards on terrible strikes in my limited experience.

The Epon AF-502s are supposed to be really nice as well, and a bit more forgiving.

The new Mizuno MP18 SCs are supposed to be out soon, and also feature a wider sole.

If you are looking JDM - something like ONOFF (probably the nicest looking), XXIO make a really GI looking forged club that is played by half the country - http://www.golfwrx.c...w-forged-irons/ If I weren't set on playing blades, I might get a set of these.

The look of the 302s combined with the fact that I couldn't find one bad thing written about them is what sold me. There's a set w/ Modus 120s on The bay right now. There also a set that looks fake (comes with a wedge)

Been reading up on the 302's for a few years, as you  said no bad reviews.  Just about bid on those 302's on the bay.  They look a little tired, but the price was in my range.

Picked up some used Stenson Legacy Blacks and haven't looked back.

Stenson's have a pocket cavity in the lower irons for added forgiveness. Fairly wide sole and some offset, lots of meat out on the toe. More forgiving than one would think. Cheap now as well.

XXIO Forged are easy to hit and feel great. I like the 2015 version, it hides it's forgiveness in a very appealing package, with not much visual offset.

Gotta pay attention what you are getting these days because the term "forged" is sprinkled liberally around various different types of iron construction methods.

The traditional forged irons are one piece.  These are the clubs that have the most solid feel and sound.

A newer type of iron came into existence a while back which employs a forged body with a welded in place spring steel face.  These irons vary in feel and sound.  Some are pretty good, Callaway Apex for example, but some others sound pretty tinny and lack that "forged club feel".

Lastly there are clubs with a cast body and "forged" face welded in place.  Calling these clubs forged is a misnomer in my view, but some people do it none the less.  Cleveland 588TT for example.  I love those clubs but the feel and sound don't compare to a one piece true forged clubs though.

It seems that most of the JDM true GI "forged" clubs use the forged body and welded face methodology.  The one piece forged clubs tend to be a little smaller and less forgiving.  This is particularly true these days since the welded face clubs are becoming more and more common.  The devil's in the details.

Good points.  For example srixon 565 irons are forged body with steel face insert.  The 7 & 9 series are single piece forged.
But another good JDM GI  to consider would be the Honma "Be Zeal" series.

Which model of the NSPro 950 GH are you considering, there are 4 different models in this series depending on the model some have an SR flex, no not senior flex but stiff/regular.

I've never found a better combination of looks, feel, and forgiveness as the 2013 ONOFF Forged.

I bought some Kuro's and sold them off before putting them in play because there were too small.  Smaller than Mizuno MX23/25 for example.  I thought they would be larger (bought sight unseen).

Thanks

Mark

Which model of the NSPro 950 GH are you considering, there are 4 different models in this series depending on the model some have an SR flex, no not senior flex but stiff/regular.

I tested out at regular flex with an 81 mph swing with a 6 iron on the little blue mizuno thingy. Other shafts like xp95 reg and a kbs tour 90 reg flex were close but I like the feel of the nippons.

I'm coming from a set of kzg evolutions with rp rifle flighted 5.5 5- gap. Love the look and feel of those forged irons. Performance would likely be stronger with the Nippon shafts and the game improvement jpx hotmetal heads.  I had to acknowledge my drop in iron speed since last analyzed more than five years ago. Still, I am going to have to wait on a brand new set for a couple of months...til then I just bought some used mp53's and some ns 950 gh reg pulls which I will put together and play around with...always wanted to try mizuno forged and now I have some shafts which should match up well. The mp53 had one of the highest maltby mpf ratings in the mp line and, while I don't expect with my swing to always be on the sweet spot, I am willing to sacrifice a bit of forgiveness and distance for feel and aesthetics with THIS set. It will be a stark contrast to my eye2+!

Btw..this JDM stuff is sure to be a difficult rabbit hole to extract oneself from. The miura, epon, grindworks, etc all are stunning. I need to get a 50 degree gap and a sand wedge and I'm afraid....very afraid of where this might take me!

Cheers

Mark

I would suggest a research on GRINDWORKS "dual pocket" :

http://en.grindworks...al-pocket-iron/

and also VEGA VC02, VC03, VC04 and the new VC05 ... you can do a "mixed" set with these (example : 4 and 5 iron in VC03, then 6 to PW in VC02.)

In any case, whatever you chose, check the specs ( loft and lie angles, head weights ...) as for GI irons, there can be some differences from one model to the next.

I agree good call on the Grindworks dual pocket great irons.  In terms of checking specs this is vital, remember Japanese irons specs are geared for smaller statued players.
