At ~208gr is the Ping G400 head heavy enough to validate a counterbalanced shaft?

I play more on feel than on a particular swing weight - but I don't like the head to feel noticeably heavy.

The counterbalanced design isn't anything new as Ping has been using this technology for several generations of drivers, etc.  It works really well and the driver feels better throughout the swing too. Just my experience but I really like it even in my old G20 driver.

I can't speak specifically about the counterbalanced design and how much that is helping or not helping.  What I can tell you is that historically I have tried Ping driver and wood shafts in the past and hated them.  I can also tell you I tried a Graphite Design AD-DI6X that was in my G in the G400.

However, the new CB Alta is, in my opinion, incredible!  Head-to-head both on the range and on the course for me personally I love the Alta.  I got the CB Alta X and I can't hit it any better than I have with the G400.  Best I have hit driver in quite some time.  I would suggest to anybody to try it before spending boat loads on a premium or upgraded shaft.

Probably. I think my M2 with a non CB'ed shaft (201g head) came in around D2.5-D3. At 208 that's in the D4 range which for ME personally is too much for driver. Not sure how many points each respective shaft will reduce the SW, but that D2 range is generally where I like driver. Rest of my clubs D3 is fine, D4 even for SW and LW.

I think the weight listed is including the adapter. Would have to check with ping but 208 is quite heavy for just the head alone

Wow, since I hated the original Alta from last year.  Who is the OEM, UST, Aldila or ...?

I play more on feel than on a particular swing weight - but I don't like the head to feel noticeably heavy.

At the length Ping is offering the stock shaft, it would appear to warrant it.   In the past the tour shafts haven't been counterbalanced, but they're also heavier and 1/2 inch shorter.

I made a point to say warrant rather than validate because for me at least whenever I've yet to enjoy a demo of a driver with a counterbalanced shaft.

I wondered the same thing.  I actually didn't hit the Alta from last year, I had a premium shaft in my G.  I did hit the Tour shaft with in both the 65 and 80X and hated it.  Hated the TFC shafts.  So, I was shocked when I actually not only liked it, but preferred it.

What makes the Alta CB counterbalanced?  I have the G400 with the shaft and it appears to just be a normal shaft.  No counterweight of any kind

I have hzrdus yellow in my g400 and it is Perfection!

i think the counterbalance is key with the heavier head myself

don't like them in lighter head drivers, but the g400 is a great match

Most reports I've seen have Aldila as the primary maker of the Atla shafts and UST for the Tour shafts.

But it doesn't really matter since they are both made to Ping's specs - they are not just one of the OEM shafts that has been rebranded.

As for the question of counterbalanced shafts or not - it largely depends on the playing length you want to play it at and what SW is a good fit for the given length and shaft weight.   Some counterbalancing might certainly helpful for the longer lengths.
