In my golf experience, X Hot Pro 15*

Can just agree with you here, when searching for a new three wood a couple of years ago I prety much tested/looked at all alternatives available back then. It came down to either the Callaway or Titleist F-model due to both presenting a nice compact, open head. The Callaway had a more muted sound which I prefer aswell as tighter dispersion. Still loving the club! Easy to launch off fairway/decent rough lies and a monster off tee. Don't really see what could make me look for a new three wood at the moment, more length would just create an unmotivated gap in the bag.

As you can see in my sig, I am all Ping now, I do love the G 15*, it is very forgiving from the turf and off the tee, it is my fairway finder and I can hit it in both directions...

Just picked up a Ping G 3 wood to replace my older G20 that I wasn't hitting too well lately.  The ball seems to come off the G faster and with more pop, plus it's easier to hit off the fairways as well.  I'm looking for an easy 3 wood to hit and one that creates some distance as well and Ping always seems to come through.  Hopefully I'll continue to hit this new club well over the next few months as well.

Too vague of a question.

What are you looking for? Something off the tee only? Deck only? Both? Do you like larger heads or smaller ones? Neutral/open looking face or a closed one?

What ball flight do you need/like? Low launch that runs out or something that gets up high and could maybe stick a green?

All of these questions and more, go into factoring what kind of 3w to get. But, with all that said, buying a brand new 3w is probably a waste of money. 3w technology hasn't changed massively in the past few years so if you need to save a few bucks, going with a model a few years old should be fine.

I'm still playing a R5 3 wood. I want a new one but just can't seem to find something better. This one just works both off the tee and ground

I've tried the the Fusion and the Epic 3 woods and neither would make me kick out the Xhot. I really liked the Fusion except it was borderline hook city. I wasn't wowed by the Epic.

In all seriousness, the best 3 wood is one the one that I leave in my bag when I use something else to lay up to a better distance. I'm not sure why I even have one.

Tour Edge Exotics EX10 Beta. I was one of the contest winners so I got to choose the shaft as well, so I paired it with the Tour AD Di 7-Stiff shaft. I was playing a 913f with a Diamana S+ Blue 72 Stiff shaft. The Ex10 Beta for me is both longer by about 5-10 yards on average even creeping up to, and passing up at times on a real good knock, my average driver distance, which also confirmed my thoughts, that I could get more out of my driver as well with a driver better fit for me and with more work on that part of my game. It is also more consistent than the 913f and is now my go to club off the tee when I want to hit the fairway. The consistency is giving me more confidence to pull out the 3w on par 5 approaches where with the 913f, if I were ever in 3w distance, I would automatically layup with no consideration of going for the green. I will say that I think the Tour AD shaft fits my swing better than the Diamana ever did, I just feel like I have more control over the club, but nevertheless, I love my EX10 and don't see this coming out of the bag for a very long time.

2017 Taylormade M2 Tour w/ Tensei CK Pro White 80TX

Best I've owned by a mile.

A man after my own heart, and the same set up Rory uses. For the stronger player the Pro White 80tx in the 2017 m2 Tour/2016 M2 deep face is a weapon. I'm shocked more power guys don't play this combo. A lot of guys seem scared of the 80 White in a 3 wood but it's remarkably easy to hit and DEEP.

Here are my top 3 fairway wood combos:

- Ping G Matrix Black Tie 80m4:  Easy to hit from the tee or deck, forgiving and consistent.  Not as long as some fairway metals out there but consistency and flight are its strengths.  The low launch low spin black tie shaft is a great combo with the higher launching/forgiving head of the Ping G.

- TM M2 16 or 17 Kuro Kage XM70x: These are longggggg.  I've had times where I've hit these as long if not longer than my driver.  So if you're in the market for distance, these should be the first to try.  I've personally hit both with the KK XM70x shaft and it just works.  Easy to control trajectory and shot shape.  Not as forgiving as the Ping though.  The head is also a little deeper so its a great option off the tee.

- Callaway Big Bertha Diamana White Board 80x:  The feel of a steel face head is unlike anything else.  Just gives you a solid thwack.  Very forgiving and has respectable distance.  Money off the deck.  This was the first 3 wood i fell in love with so i'm a bit biased towards it lol.

Cobra F6 and F7 have been a pretty good balance between ease of use and distance for me.  I picked up the F6 purely for tee use on a handful of holes at my home course, but have slowly started using it on occaison from the deck and, just as slowly, I'm becoming more confident.  I was able to trade for an F7 head and I'd say it's just a little easier to hit off the deck with the same shaft and settings, but no major difference.

One I really wanted to get along with but didn't was the Tight Lie Ti.  It was so easy to elevate from the deck but an absolute hook machine.  5w was the same.  I fight outside-in but it usually manifests as a controllable draw with my F7 3w and F6 Baffler, but the Tight Lies Ti was always an off-the-chart 25-50 yard hook no matter what measures I employed to correct.

The two 3 woods that have worked for me are the RBZ Stage 2 Tour with a GD ADDI 7X and the 2017 M1 with the Oban Tour Limited 70.  The M1 3 is my favorite club in the bag.

Playewd the xr #3 and it worked good. Changed to a tour version of the 2016 m2 to match my driver. Feels really solid. I dont think you will notice much dif. between the brands and models if the lofts are the same. I prefer hitting it of the deck or of a hack in the tee.

Try as many as you can and go with looks, feel and perfomance. I've hit the m2, m2 2017, ping, m1, Epic, XR and they are all within like 5 yards in distance and pretty much the same in flight, spin etc. as well.

But what do I know, I only play stiff shaft and hit my #3 240-250 yards.

I have struggled finding a good 3 wood for many years. I played a TM r7 for what seems like a 100 years because I just couldn't find anything that suited my eye or played as well. That said I bought a XR16 3 wood and paired it with a diamana white at 82 grams and it flies. The head is a little larger to my eye than I like but can't argue with the results. I haven't had a chance to hit a epic 3 wood yet, but I am really happy with this combo right now.  FOR ME this is the best one I've found so far. Really interested in the epic though, I have a SZ driver and it's the real deal.

It really is amazing how easy it is to play the M2 Tour w/ Tensei CK Pro White 80TX.

Sometimes I make a smooth pass at the ball to hit a soft-landing 240-250 yard shot, and the shaft feels amazing.

Sometimes I power into a high draw trying to bang one 280+ yards, and the shaft feels amazing.

To me, the characteristics of the shaft (the soft butt and very firm tip) are much more apparent in the driver shaft, whereas the 80TX in a fairway wood has more of the linear-loading that just feels complete.

I got mine for $160 on GolfWrx buy/sell/trade. They're also on eBay for $240 uncut in all weights - if you look for deals they're certainly out there.

Your shaft test posting and continuous praise of the M2 + PW shaft is starting to temp me a bit...
I'm already searching for tensei shaft to try on the m1 head but now the 3 wood itch is starting

You can find those 80's cheap on the for sale area because they are often short and tipped, which is perfect for a fairway wood. Street price on the new ones is $325-350. If you are going new, do yourself a big favor and buy from someone authorized who can warranty the product if there is ever an issue. Well worth the piece of mind to me.

I like Pro White in the 3 wood much more than the driver. I feel like the Pro Orange driver/Pro White 3 wood set up is outstanding. You couldn't buy my 3 wood out of my bag if you offered me $1000 for it. It is, hands down, the best 3 wood I've ever owned. Massively long off the tee and easy to get up off the deck. I normally am not a big distance bragger type guy, and outside of Trackman data you will rarely hear me mention distance in a thread, but to make my point, the first time I hit it on the course, I drove a 294 yard par 4 over water. Very small landing area just short of the green with OB right and bunkering left. High risk high reward. The ball hit pin high, hopped and rolled into the back fringe, 317 yards lasered back to the tee marker. The FIRST time I hit in on a golf course. My objective was to land it slightly SHORT and have it kick on. It was 15 yards longer in the air than any 3 wood I'd ever hit on that hole before. It hasn't left the bag since. Also, like Bomber said, you can shave off 15-20 yards but just hitting a high fade with it. Turn it over and it hits and runs. I've seriously hit no less than probably 400 3 wood set ups with different heads and shafts in the last 5 years. ONE club was close, 2017 M2 Tour head with the same shaft. That's it. Nothing, and I mean NOTHING else can hang.

The best I've ever had off the deck AND the tee was a TEE EX9. But like a dummy, I traded it in for a M2 2017 3 wood. It's ok but the lie angle is weird on it. For me the EX9 is longer and more forgiving....which is why I just ordered one from the bay and will be looking to move both my M2 3w and 5w very soon.
