Ok so I am going to visit a buddy who is at Naval Graduate school in Monterrey.  While he is in class Mon-Fri, I plan on playing golf and travelling around the area.

My plan is to fly into SF and then drive down to Monterrey.  I would imagine it makes for a good road trip.  Roughly 7 days in California.
Besides Pebble Beach what courses do you recommend playing?  Any hidden gems?  Never used a caddie so that would be interesting.  Restaurants?  I am seafood lover.

You have lots of good public courses well worth playing but, besides Pebble, the only course that most likely falls in the "must play" category is Pasatiempo.

Must Play = Pasatiempo

Should play= Bayonet, Spyglass, Poppy Hills, Blackhorse,

Hidden gem that is not really a hidden gem. Back nine at Pacific Grove at sunset.

Read this as it's very informative about some of the golf courses on the Monterey Peninsula and Argonne69's reviews. http://www.golfwrx.c...ey-trip-report/

A HUGE vote for Pasa. Place is unreal, and if you are somehow able to play early, the greens are the craziest putting challenge I've ever had. Possibly the greatest collection of Par 3s anywhere.

For seafood restaurants I like in no particular order, Stillwaters Bar & Grill at Pebble, Monterey's Fish House, AW Shucks Cocktail & Oyster Bar, Passionfish, Mission Ranch has a great scallop dinner and is owned by Clint Eastwood, Sea Harvest in Monterey and Carmel, The Fishwife. You could also check out the seafood restaurants on Cannery Row, Fisherman's Wharf.

It's been a while but I recall Carmel valley ranch and Quail lodge being very nice..

I personally think Spyglass is a better golf course than a Pebble strictly from a design and layout standpoint, but of course Pebble is Pebble.

It's sort of golf heaven on earth. If you had to pick just one it would be no contest, but you may not be able to get on Pebble.  I imagine  you know by now that if you aren't staying on property there are no tee times for non guests anymore. I believe the policy is something like first come first served for walk ups. No pre booking. You may want to look into booking a room if you haven't already. This close to sept it may be too late.

The last trip I took with my father a year before he passed away was to Pebble. We Stayed in the lodge on the second floor behind the 18th green for a week.  Played Pebble, Poppy, Spanish Bay, Spyglass,  Carmel valley ranch and Quail lodge in Carmel.
The trip of a lifetime to say the least. Very fond memories.

Have fun out there.

I'm finishing up my last couple months at NPS...are you active duty too?

I'd second the recommendations for Pasatiempo and Bayonet Black Horse.  Are you playing golf every day?  And why does your friend have class on Friday?!

In the past, at around this time of year, Pasatiempo will let everything get brown. I understand why they do it and am sympathetic. They will usually reduce green fees when they do. Just a heads up in case you come all this way and expect everything to be lush and green. I would check with them first. Also, courses around here punch greens and fairways in late August....

You should be fine by Sept though.

Pasatiempo during the draught had very brown fairways as Santa Cruz limited their water usage but I believe that they implemented a water recycling system which should keep everything green.

Pasa secured a water supply last year so no worries.  Post #3 sums it up.  Gotta play Pasa, then there's everything else...Bayonet/blackhorse...Poppy Hills for sure like Pasa.

For food, I can't believe no one has mentioned Phil's Fish Market in Moss Landing (locals know this is the place).

Pacific Grove is known as poor man's Pebble, it's worth the time.  Twilight rates are your wallet's friend.

There's a nice little restaurant a short drive down Hwy 1 called Rocky Point Restaurant  http://www.rockypointrestaurant.com/.  Not a shill for them but its right down on the water so you get some great views and you can walk out on some of the rocks by the water and get some great pics.  Food was good too.  My wife and I enjoyed it.

I'm not sure I would pay $70 to play Harding.  The back 9 is pretty good (layout wise, but it was in horrible shape 2 years ago when I played it).  I thought the front 9 was terrible.  The layout is boring, jam packed and the holes were on top of each other.

Make sure to join the NCGA before your trip. Theres a deal right now that's only 25$ to join through the rest of this year. https://ncga.org/membership/join-us/ It will save you big $$$ at poppy hills and most of the other courses in the area

Aw shucks for seafood

If your not from Cali eat as much Mexican as possible!! Ask around.. Most places off the the beaten path that are full of Hispanics are usually a sure bet. Try the different civiches Taco trucks also for burritos and tortas wth different meats,
Cabeza, el pastor, carnitas, etc

Good call on joining NCGA as you do get huge greens fee discounts at Poppy Hills but none of the other Pebble Beach courses are offering discounts in September. You can get NCGA greens fee discounts at Bayonet & Blackhorse in Seaside and also Quail Lodge in Carmel Valley.
