Hello all,

Thought I'd share my experience yesterday.  I've been playing a cavity or players cavity for the last 5/6 years.
I found a really nice set of FG59s and shafted them up with DG Pros.  I put them up for sale locally, but for laughs, I took them to the course yesterday - and what a surprise.

I found that I could actually hit them.  I was much more careful in iron selection, and shot execution, but I think that was a good thing.

Observations -
  • The Wilsons cut through ground like nothing.  Gotta be really careful if you get steep.
  • They also cut through rough really well
  • You need a firm and committed swing or they will twist.
  • Favourite shot of the day - 555 yard Par 5 yards from the blues.  My second shot is normally a lay-up.  All six rounds this year, I hit the ground and duffed my five iron.   I hit my 5 iron and hit the most beautiful feeling iron with some beautiful ball flight.  Had a 100 yards into the green and had my birdie putt
  • I still can't hit a 4 iron.
Conclusion - I'm going to try them for the rest of year.

LOL.

I laughed so hard at your last two points, especially nested together like that.

"My favorite part was when I hit the most perfect 5 iron in the entire universe and it was awesome. Still can't hit the 4 though."

You are awesome. :)

Good post, OP. What's your HC by the way? So many players think they can't hit blades, when really they can. I am in love with my CG1 Black Pearls and they are WAY more low bounce (even for a MB design) than I would have thought to ever play. They make you a better player. Sure misses are less "forgiving", but I've found that doesn't worsen my score. My score is worse when I miss in the wrong spots (i.e. Short side over a bunker to a downhill pin location), not when my misses are 5 yards shorter than an already short miss.

Blades are a wonderful way to make you focus a bit more. if you're a good consistent ball striker, blades  are a non issue. Enjoy the new sticks.

Regarding misses - what I noticed was that I was paying more attention to what I was trying to do.  The misses were more lateral than front to back.  It really forces me to focus on my target.

They are going to stay in play for the rest of the season.  Will post updates along the way.

I was also using player's cavity irons until recently, then found some cheap blades (Dunlop RG Designs) and decided to bag them for a laugh.

Wow... The feel and control is incredible! Distances are super consistent, which probably comes down to me taking more time and making sure I get a clean strike.

These are staying in my bag.

Sounds like you are on your way to becoming a better striker of the ball. Amazing how a good set of blades makes some improve their game. Keep us posted !!

One can only hope!  I think the biggest benefit is going to be the requirement to really focus.  And that should always be there, but we get lazy.  What i've noticed in the last two rounds is - things usually go well, until I look at my phone on the back 9, and attention is diverted and I never get it back.

I have never played GI improvement irons ever. My first purchase was a Maxfli LTD Cavity back forged clubs, these clubs hurt !! The golf shop was begging for someone to take these irons off their shop. The old pro that worked there told me.......those were the best irons he was selling but no one wanted to touch it.

He also told me, I will learn how to swing the irons correctly......

Since then, I have Mizuno MP-14, 68 and recently purchased Hogan Ft. Worth  irons.

What made me stay playing with blades ? The irons speak to me oh so very loudly. Tells me via the ball flight, the spin of the ball and yes gives me a little nudge to my elbows when I do not strike the sweet spot.

Getting the swing correct is a game in itself....

Lastly, I took some golf lessons a few years back......the golf pro had Wilson FG59 irons !!! (He was an older gent).

So, another round in books.  I shot an 86, but had 7 three putts.
I hit the first six greens in regulation.  Had one birdie.

For the heck of it, put the Ping Rapture V2 back in the bag.  Maybe a little higher spin than the M2, but had a really good day off the tee.

There were two shots that blades cost me, but I'm not sure if the result would have been better with my other set - mid iron from the bunker.  Had this shot twice, and the first time hit a little fat and the ball went 60 yards.  Butchered the hole and walked off with a double.  The second time, picked it up cleanly, but the face was a bit open and flew it pin high, but with fade/slice flight.  Got up and down to save bogey.

I've played with blades since mid to late teens and never once thought blades were hard to hit
Compared to Ram cavity back that i hit at one point of time, they're all very easy to hit. One thing to note is that i hit anything and everything high. Long irons, fairway woods, driver, etc

Also Razr X MB seem to be quite forgiving on the slightly off center hits. Clubs will tell you that you caught it slightly off center but the loss of distance is very minimal and direction doesn't vary much either

A lot of people cannot believe this - myself I lose 90% of my strokes off the tee ... it is my short game and irons that keep me alive during a round. I'm now finding others using my lost balls - I pay my dues to the tree gods almost every round, multiple times. When I put the 32s in my bag this season I noticed that I was paying more attention and gained a benefit in my woods (nice surprise) too. With the new MP-18 series driving irons coming out - I may be able to ditch my fairway woods (if I cannot control them soon) and have all irons and either a driver or 2/3 wood for the long game.

I found the same thing. More focus on the iron swing benefitted my driver swing as well. I found the sweet spot much, much more. Wasn't nearly as loose with it.

Great inspiration. I can fat or thin any iron, blade or SGI, and similar to a few other posters I lose more shots off the tee or on the green than anywhere else. A month ago I went for a Mizuno fitting and loved the mp5. I bought a demo mp4 6i to see if I could hit something smaller and even more beautiful and............I now have a mp4/54 set on their way to me. I play off 16 :)

If they work keep them in the bag. A Wilson Staff blade out of the sweet spot is a match for anything from Japan.

I just recently purchased some 712 CBs for a good price with some modus 120s.  No course use yet but I think I need a reshaft with higher trajectory shafts.

Either way, I am trying to jump from SGIs to the players CBs because they force you to focus on that strike.  And when you hit one clean, nothing replaces the sound and feel

I have played Titleist since I was 12 bc I thought thats what I needed to play. Played 690mb's in high school and immediately want to AP2's after high school. I played 710mb's then 712cb's then 710 AP2's the moved on to 714 AP2's until last year. Sold the AP's to get the 716 AP2's but ended up buying another gun instead. That left me nothing but my old high school blades (690mb's) which I have been playing for over a year now (by default). From what I have learned, blades make you a better ball striker. Are they for everyone, HELL NO. But the compact head with less offset gives me a sense that if I can hit them, I can hit almost anything. I have played more golf this past year than I can ever remember but have also played some of my best golf the last year with the blades. That being said, I am currently looking for a set of Srixon 565's or 545's :)

Trying this same idea as of late... picked up some 695 mbs.  Came with PX 6.0 but my first round out with them, I could tell those shafts just wrest for me so I popped in a set of 5.5s I had laying around and last round was a great ball striking round.  I have them bent a degree strong and they are performing better than I could have expected.  Off center, they really don't feel any worse than my CB iron sets I have been gaming and haven't been punishing distance wise. Really like the way they get through the turf compared to some wider soled irons, they just seem to give me more trouble.  Excited to get them back out on the course again.

I have the Srixon 965 5-P and a 565 4 iron. No problem at all playing them. Very nice irons with great feel and playability. Granted, these are musclebacks with some forgiveness features, but I don't get any advantage with CB irons.
Current lineup:

TM M1 440 Tour Issue, 10-degree, Diamana B Series X,
67g.
Nike Flex 3 wood, Diamana S-70 stiff
Callaway Epic 5W, Hzrdus T800 S, 65g.
Callaway Apex hybrid, 20 degree, Kuro Kage 80HY stiff shaft
Mizuno MP-59, 4-P, PX 5.5
(Coming: Srixon z565 4 iron, z965 5-P, C Taper Lite X.)
Ping Glide 50, 54, CFS wedge shafts
Fourteen RM12 58/12 sand wedge
Edel Rogue putter (thick blade), 34 inch.

I was really close to pulling trigger on z945 3-PW.  Haven't hit 965 but if they feel anything like 945 they are good!

Ended up pulling trigger on some Edel Forged CB instead.  I just LOVE the grinds and higher bounce.

Hit me well boys!

One more round.  Shot an 83, but blitzed the back with a 37.  Driver killed me on the front.
I could think of one shot that on the front 9.  163 to a back pin, and took out a 6 iron, and just yanked it left and I ended up in a grass bunker 30 yards short and left.  Was able to save bogey.

Initially, I thought I was going to be shorter overall playing blades, but what I have found is that I have the same distances as the cavities.  Got two rounds this week - Friday and Saturday.  We'll see how it goes.  But, to be honest, most consistent ball striking I've ever had with irons.
