I came here and vented.

I say I don't need to go out golfing with my friend, because I'm happy to spend time doing other things with him.  I don't care what he shoots and certainly am cheering for him to play well.  I'm just pointing out he doesn't practice (ever), nor did we arrive in time for him to even hit 10-12 shots or try and putt prior to the round.  It will thus be next to impossible for him to do anything well.

The equipment he was playing was outdated and I have no problem giving him my old bag (from 2015/16), which is better then his from 1996 (or earlier).

And yes the fact I and others have hosted him golfing and he has no idea as to the cost is frustrating.

I consider that I was generous and was venting about his demeanor and yes probably a $200 day (vs. split the bill when we go out for dinner)......

All said would be happy to have him join me in a scramble if golf was on the agenda.

You vent a lot.

Edit - Does he know that you're paying for him to play?  I've never been a member at a private club, and up until about a year ago, would have thought you could bring a guest for free.  If he knows what you payed for him, then yes, that's an a-hole move to at least not offer to take you to play somewhere or likewise.  But it's entirely possible he has no idea, and won't unless someone tells him.

So just because clubs are newer means he will hit them better?? LOL I wish I could go back to my titleist 990 irons from early 2000s. Those things were amazing and played the best golf of my life. Had to retire them last year. Bought some Taylor Made PSIs. Great iron but it does not mean they are better. Also maybe his old clubs were fitting for him and had the correct length, loft, lie angle, and shaft flex? I have the 2016 m2 and hit the 2017 m2 last month. Hit the 2016 model better / further. You invited him to your club to play. If you wanted him to pay his way you should of told him the price would be $150 for the green fees/ cart up front. I would offer to play my tee time, but some people are not brought up that way.

flat out, that guy shouldn't be your friend. he doesn't need you.

true friends to me mean more than $150 bucks, DOZENS of prov1s, or any other 'fees' associated with joining ME at MY club under MY invitation.

go vent to your cats man -- talking such words of your 'oldest friend' isn't right. even if it is here.

We're not cheap, but yes we have one very generous friend (the other in this group we've know since 12) and I do my best to reciprocate.  My friend sorry has been invited to tournaments and clubs to the tune of $1,000+ and has not done like (and not for any financial reason).

You really think he was fitted for clubs?  This is the real world not golfwrx......

No I hate losing balls and bet each and everyone of you who has handed a friend a mint prov1 that was then lost, expected him to get one from his bag and hand it to you.

If you handed them too a $500 club (because the $300 driver of yours they're using just isn't good enough) that they then hit and left a skymark you'd be fine with it.

Yes I vented.  Figured this was a good place to do so.

As said he's played 5X's and the cost in excess of $1,000 (scrambles & private clubs) and hasn't offered the same.

Yes I vented.  Figured this was a good place to do so.
i'll take my money from that bet right now. IT'S JUST A BALL MAN.

you're 'that guy' in this instance who thinks his friendship isn't equitable. if your old friend hasn't offered the same, why would you expect him to act different now? you're trying to appear like the 'great' friend who invited another to his course and, although it was an invitation -- it was an empty one, or one that had expectations that weren't laid out to the invitee.

a) if you know your friend isn't going to reciprocate and you're that hungup on cash; DON'T invite him. if you do, and can't afford it or want him to pay -- TALK to him about it. (after all, you've known each other since 12...can't be that too uncomfortable of a conversation)

b) don't offer to loan him clubs, balls or anything else if you're fearing for your stuff. not that hard.

c'mon man.

I would take that bet. We laugh when we toss someone a ball and they put it in the water or something silly. If you are really friends it all works itself out.

I lost nine balls in eleven holes and I just took the balls from my three friends bag at that point.   I was just trying to finish the round.  :)  Nobody was talking to me.   Silence.  I think they were afraid it was contagious.   I still get s*** for that miserable round of golf.   And now everyone laughs their a** off about that round.
And no I never repaid them for their balls.    $150 round and you are worried about two used balls?    I'm trying to figure out why you think you are friends with this guy?   Because you give him stuff?

Venting is when you are mad for like three minutes.  You post and then you forget about it.

But you should keep in mind I usually lose about three balls per year on our puttting green.    It's a gift.  I come by it honestly.

I'm amazing at losing balls.  There's a chance I could be the best in the world at it.  Everyone knows if they give me a ball it is never coming back.  :)

Seems like you and your friends aren't the brightest stars in the sky who keep on treating him.

I'll make one last observation/comment.

Yes I do vent, which prevents exploding or having a massive heart attack.

My friendship is strong, but like anything certain things do get to me.  The fact is I am hosting, supplied everything and it is not a cheap day.  The two others are reciprocating at their club and not sure what my friend will do, as he has said nothing and in the other invites concerning golf has not once inquired as to the cost or done anything in return.

The balls and what I considered uneducated comments about the clubs when he has not hit the range prior or at all in the few times he has golfed over the last 5 year, was what set me off......

http://www.golfrepub...-tour-ltd-irons

Sorry to have come here and post my frustration....

Sorry to have come here and post my frustration....

Dude has been mooching off you for years. So it is your fault not his. I have helped in the past pay for my friends tee times, drinks, and etc. and think nothing about it. I am fortunate to do it as I know he does not make good money. Friendship is worth more than a 3 dollar golf ball. Plus getting all pissed off he did not want to hit your golf clubs.. :taunt:  Get over yourself.

Again it is not about not hitting my clubs, heck he hasn't hit his clubs in years.  Just not understanding the physics and technology and throwing out ridiculous statements.

I dreamed as an 11 year old to own a Dunlup Maxply tennis racquet the best in the game.  If I showed up to play tennis and then explained I hit it much better then any 2012 tennis racquet you give me because of the feel, I'd be called an idiot.

Op, you still haven't answered the question - does your friend know you're being charged for him to play?  If he does and he doesn't offer to reciprocate, you've got a legit beef.  Then you decide if you can live with having a mooch for a friend or not.

But the club and ball thing is just ridiculous.  Who gives a flip if he doesn't understand or care new club physics vs old.  Really?

I can't believe you're still complaining about this, days later.  Kind of off point, but yesterday I took a call (I'm a cop) where the guy called 911 saying he needs help getting in contact with adult protective services and mental health services.  He complained and complained about everything.  Even cussed us up and down when all we could do was give him phone numbers since we're not social workers.  Long story short, he was on hard times and basically needed to vent. He mentioned that he ran out of cigarettes days ago and was agitated because of it.  So I left the call, ran to the store and bought him a pack of smokes.  Went back to his house, handed him the smokes and made his day.  And he wasn't even a friend!!!  Now maybe you'll have a better understanding as to why you're getting so much crap about your "venting".

If you're still angry about the balls, PM your address and I'll send you a sleeve of prov's with absolutely no expectations to get anything in return.

I think we got Ye Olde passive aggressive "sorry to have bothered you with my post" since he didn't get a chorus of agreement.

And I second the offer for a sleeve of Pro V's of your choice. PM me your address.

Yes he knows, the cost I'm not so sure.  Certainly knows it is not cheap.  We're all over 50.

And I have more sleeves of ProV's, thanks for the offer, but not the point as I was venting and letting off steam.

Yes I hate losing balls!!!!!  I said it.

So here's a solution.  Carry a sleeve of Pinnacles or Top Flites for the disrespectful friend that keeps losing the pro v's. I can send you a dozen of those or you can search the red, yellow and white staked areas of any golf course to keep a handful in your bag for these very special rounds with your oldest friend.
