From a selfish standpoint.........I hope these new irons aren't everything I'm afraid they'll be.........because I really like my G irons and don't need to buy another set.........yet

Be afraid. They look that good. Most seamless transition from the I-series to G-series in a long while. Top line is improved.

I just happened to pop into my local golf store today and saw the G400 driver, fairway, hybrid, Crossover and G400 iron.

When I put the G400 down the top line reminded me of the i20.  It was much slimmer than the standard G and appeared to have less offset.  Sat very nicely behind the ball.  The back of the club was the colorway of the driver and had a circular rubber insert on back.  Perhaps for sound dampening.  Still had the custom tuning port.  Very subtle and barely raised off the club.  Sort of like the rubber on the back of the Apex.  The Crossover appeared to have much less offset, appeared little longer across the face but perhaps that's the colour (versus the black).  The Alta shaft looked pretty slick.  As mentioned it looks a dark burnt orange when you look straight at it, but as you address the ball, look down the shaft, it appears much darker, black even.  Pretty cool.  I hit a couple of balls and it felt explosive.  Going to be popular I think.  The back (not the whole head) reminded me of the iBlade.  Very simple.

The driver looked superb.  Still had the T&D (turbulators/dragonfly tech) pretty subtle also.  Love the shape of the head.  I have the G30, and friend has the G25, looks shorter back to front than those.  Didn't compare head to head. The shaft was cool too.  According to the rep had some serious MOI reading 9500+ (very forgiving I'm told).  The smaller head + the T&D means additional/faster club head speed with less effort.  Didn't hit it, but both the rep and owner said it was a lot quieter.  Golf Pride TV 360 as standard.  The fairway and hybrid also looked pleasing.  Compact like the driver.  The Tour shafts offered are going to be 60g and 75g (as opposed to the 80).  Still silver but updated graphics.

I have no doubt this whole line is going to be very popular.  Great aesthetics, with (I'm sure) wonderful Ping performance.

You hit balls with the g400 irons or the crossover?

Crossover.  Didn't hit the irons as I was simply listening to the rep and didn't want to impinge on the rep and owner's conversation.  I was offered the Crossover so hit a couple with the Alta shaft.  Quite light but it felt soft when pured.

Weird that people have mixed reviews with the offset of the irons. Some say it's the same amount of offset compared to the G. Others say it's less.

How do you think the crossover 4 would blend with your i irons? I'm about to pull the trigger on a set of i200 and am thinking of getting a crossover 4 iron

I may have been wrong, but I held each iron side by side with its current G equivalent.  The offset and profile looked the same.  MAYBE a slight tweak to the topline.  Even my rep (and all the literature) said nothing about the offset being reduced or the head shape changing significantly. Just that the face was a bit thinner, and that there was some increased design in the CTP in the back of the cavity.  The current G is a great iron.  Very few ways to really improve it, except making the face even thinner.

He said it was awesome.  Also said the new graphite shafts for all clubs have color changing technology. Looks like a different color at different angles.  Not sure I'm a fan of that.

Color changing shafts too?  Doesn't sound like Ping.

They look copper when they are hanging on the rack, but when you set it up to hit it at address the color changes to almost completely black.

Pretty cool.

If the iron finish looks similar to the i200 I will be tempted to order a 3 and 4 then using 5-PW with the i200.

If you can figure out how to get a 3 iron from Ping in the G series...let me know.  I haven't seen them offer one in a while.  I recently bought 4-PW in the G irons as a second set...and they didn't offer a 3 iron in that model.

Hmm, didn't know they didn't offer a 3 in the G. Maybe crossover, 4 iron, then 5-PW then? I like my hybrid I just have to crank the loft way down to get the face to look right to me at address and that messes up my gapping at the top.

Some people are more visually sensitive to it than others, and some of the things the manufacturers do to influence how we see the club work for some, and not for others.

I know everyone's eager for information, but in the end it really should only matter how it looks to you.

Look at it this way.  If I'm someone at Ping, if pics had been released this week some of the buzz would be diluted by the Titleist 718 leaks.   Next week they can have it to themselves.   From where that Ping person sits, it probably couldn't work out better.

Not to be rude but isn't that saying Ping views themselves as inferior to Titleist?

I don't think so.  Every company wants their brand to have their moment in the sun.  Every company tries to time their release to where they get all the attention.  Titleist usually makes the Quicken their intro to new stuff.  It wasn't a shock that they did it.  If PING already stated that mid July is their formal intro date, the other companies will step back and let them have their shine.  It's professional courtesy while they try to beat each other's brains in in sales.

I am looking at new irons and have been hitting different irons to get a feel of a wide range of irons before I go for fitting ( I want to have it narrowed down before I go into Cool Clubs for fitting.  I hit the i200's today. I Really liked them, ALOT. Any thoughts on how the G400's may be compared to the i200's and if it is worth the wait for the G400's to come out. I hit the G's, but liked the i200 more. Any thoughts are appreciated. Thank you.

I think if you've hit the current Gs and i200s, and like the i200s more, you should probably go with the i200s.  The G400s are going to be a lot like the current Gs, with maybe a slightly hotter face/more distance.  The feel and ball flight characteristics will be similar to the current Gs.

Great. Thank you. More distance isnt really what I am after, rather more consistent yardage/accuracy and feel. That does help. Thanks again.

Yeah the name G was the worst product name for ebay/google searching in recent history. Now when I search ping G on ebay to look at clubs, I have to also see every G10/15/20/25 and 30 every  made, too? Geez.

So G400 is better now that only that stuff would pop up. I would assume then new revs would be maybe either G4XY or G500 up to G900? Who knows but I think Titleist is about the only company who did it right.

Crossover.  Didn't hit the irons as I was simply listening to the rep and didn't want to impinge on the rep and owner's conversation.  I was offered the Crossover so hit a couple with the Alta shaft.  Quite light but it felt soft when pured.

How do you think the crossover 4 would blend with your i irons? I'm about to pull the trigger on a set of i200 and am thinking of getting a crossover 4 iron

From memory, I think ok.  The colour is similar, and the numbering on the sole is like the new Glide 2.0 wedges.  I think it had a '4' and maybe the degree '22' towards the toe.  The back is very simple.  The Crossover is still a hefty club but behind the ball it's not intimidating a there is still quite a bit of club.  I prefer the look of the new one over the old.

Weird that people have mixed reviews with the offset of the irons. Some say it's the same amount of offset compared to the G. Others say it's less.

I must admit I played the G, but my instant reaction when I put it down by the ball was how thin it was for a G and how it reminded me of my i20.  Certainly not as small as the i series, but definitely a step in that direction from previous iterations.

The headcovers weren't amazing.  Black and orange I think, and the orange was a lot brighter than the accents, and colors of the shaft.  Similar style to the G.

I'll probably continue to play my i20's, but always nice to take a look at possible replacements (even though I am unlikely to change anything).

Same steel shaft options as current PING irons.  I think the lofts are the same as the current Gs, along with the additional power spec loft option.

I hadn't realized that Ping offered "power spec" lofts for the 2016 G irons. Yikes - 6 iron loft of 25.5*.

I would love to get fit for the new G400 irons at Ping's headquarters in AZ. Ping doesn't appear to be doing demo/fitting days in my area.

I once had a one hour fitting session with a Ping rep who knew what they were doing. At the end of the session, it gave me confidence that I was ordering a set of Rapture irons specifically to my specs (both static and dynamic).

Has anyone gone to their headquarters for a fitting? Was it worth the trip?
