From a selfish standpoint.........I hope these new irons aren't everything I'm afraid they'll be.........because I really like my G irons and don't need to buy another set.........yet
Be afraid. They look that good. Most seamless transition from the I-series to G-series in a long while. Top line is improved.
I just happened to pop into my local golf store today and saw the G400 driver, fairway, hybrid, Crossover and G400 iron.
When I put the G400 down the top line reminded me of the i20. It was much slimmer than the standard G and appeared to have less offset. Sat very nicely behind the ball. The back of the club was the colorway of the driver and had a circular rubber insert on back. Perhaps for sound dampening. Still had the custom tuning port. Very subtle and barely raised off the club. Sort of like the rubber on the back of the Apex. The Crossover appeared to have much less offset, appeared little longer across the face but perhaps that's the colour (versus the black). The Alta shaft looked pretty slick. As mentioned it looks a dark burnt orange when you look straight at it, but as you address the ball, look down the shaft, it appears much darker, black even. Pretty cool. I hit a couple of balls and it felt explosive. Going to be popular I think. The back (not the whole head) reminded me of the iBlade. Very simple.
The driver looked superb. Still had the T&D (turbulators/dragonfly tech) pretty subtle also. Love the shape of the head. I have the G30, and friend has the G25, looks shorter back to front than those. Didn't compare head to head. The shaft was cool too. According to the rep had some serious MOI reading 9500+ (very forgiving I'm told). The smaller head + the T&D means additional/faster club head speed with less effort. Didn't hit it, but both the rep and owner said it was a lot quieter. Golf Pride TV 360 as standard. The fairway and hybrid also looked pleasing. Compact like the driver. The Tour shafts offered are going to be 60g and 75g (as opposed to the 80). Still silver but updated graphics.
I have no doubt this whole line is going to be very popular. Great aesthetics, with (I'm sure) wonderful Ping performance.
