What's the big deal? Golf isn't basketball or Nascar or football. It's based on a rich tradition steeped in class. People who yell out statements like "get in the water" should be flogged with a 3-iron repeatedly...I'd be first to volunteer. As an aside, I don't particularly care for VJ, but come on...
You know you must be really lame when you are called out for being weak by golf announcers...what a total tool. I hope he was escorted into the middle of the lake by the gallery.
I thoroughly dislike Singh - but there's no doubt whatsoever that that shout was classless and an appalling thing to hear on a golf course.
Matt, I never really like Singh either,
But on hearing certain stories lately he does seem to be a decent, classy guy. http://www.golfwrx.c...amp;hl=St.+Jude
Shouting 'Get in da HOLE!!!' is bad enough,
I really don't understand what made the fan say 'get in da water'.
i think there is a small group of people that think vijay is a cheater and always will be one...he does so much outside of golf that i for one can forgive him and hope others like that guy can too and give the guy a break instead of yelling
The PGA needs to print on the tickets: "If you shout "get in the hole" or "you the man" at any point during the round you will be ejected from the premises."
Quite aside from the cheating incident there is a personal experience (something I witnessed) a few years back that forever left me (and a lot of other people, I suspect) with a dislike for Singh. I don't think it's appropriate to relate it on a public forum like this, but it was absolutely deplorable and deeply offensive to many people.
Many of the stories I've heard since, via the press, have bolstered my dislike of him and confirmed much of the impression I gleaned from that incident. Admittedly, what you read in the newspapers isn't always 100% accurate, but the stories of rude and inconsiderate behaviour seem to too plentiful and too frequent to be exagerated in every case.
I'm sure he does a great deal for charity, and he's an accomplisehed player; but I don't like him. I'm sure he's able to crack on with his life and career regardless of what I think though.
As I say, having segwayed from the subject of the imbecile in the crowd at Bay Hill, it was an appalling thing to hear on a golf course and the halfwit should have been unceremoniously hoiked out of the gallery and thrown off the course.
yeah, my post was more a reaction to the act itself, regardless of the player it was shouted at.
again, moving away from comments about Vijay, remember; this was the defending champion of the event itself (irregardless of who it was) who was hitting a shot into 18 that still might have ment something, at that point of the tourney at least.
personally, I just couldnt believe it.
Ive been away from golf for a number of years (+17) so im glad to see that this hasnt somehow become the "norm".
We don't know ANYTHING about these golfers frankly. You rarely know a person's true character until you've been around them for at least 2 months. To expect to like/dislike a person based on what you see on TV or for a few minutes in person at a golf tournament is like figuring out a car's handling based on TV ads.
VJ is VERY old school. It's easy to judge him wrong.
As I say, it was something I witnessed that left a sour taste. I may be wrong in my opinion of him; I may not. Either way, I'm sure he won't lose any sleep. It wasn't an experience on TV either. It was from about ten feet away at a golf tournament, along with a few dozen other people.
What's 'old school' when it comes to manners and courtesy? I'm not sure I understand that. Whatever school it was, what I saw (and what I've heard reported since) was, and were, downright rude and discourteous.
But, like him or like him not, he shouldn't have to put up with that mug in the crowd.
It has always been said that he keeps most at an arms length away, until he trusts you then he is a great person and friend. I think a lot can be said by his regualr playing partners in practice rounds, could these guys be anymore different?

This also says a lot about the man he is:
Vijay Singh Charitable Foundation
Vijay and Ardena Singh's goal within their foundation is to distribute money to help underprivileged women and children and to hopefully share some of their good fortune with others. Thanks to the AstraZeneca Company and the Crestor Charity Challenge, Vijay earned this contribution at the 2005 Mercedes Championship. Vijay and Ardena feel strongly about benefiting local charities, thus the very generous contribution to Make-A-WIsh, Hawaii.
There is also a big article aboutt him in the latest Golf Digest.
I do not know of a guy on tour that nore resembles the everyday man as much as Jerrry Kelly, and the fact he says that Vijay is the most generous about helping others with their game on tour says a lot about his character.
As I say, it was something I witnessed that left a sour taste. I may be wrong in my opinion of him; I may not.
Why don't you just tell us what happened? It if was something done in public, by a public figure, it's fair game. I don't think Vijay is going to track you down and toilet paper your house or something.
I'm loath to start muckspreading on an open forum about a pro golfer, since it's not really my place to start quoting what was said, and I'm sure I would rightly incur the wrath of the moderators since it's not in keeping with the standards of the board.
Suffice to say it was an offensive comment made in front of several dozen people and directed towards a member of the gallery at a large golf event some years ago. It was utterly classless, insulting, and was roundly condemned by those who saw and heard it as being breathtakingly rude and insensitive. I'm sure most of those people probably still feel the same way I do.
Ever since that incident, I've never much cared for him.
To be honest, I'm sorry I mentioned it now; apologies to the OP for drifting away from the original point of the thread - which was the cretin in the gallery. I've no qualms about criticising him whatsoever - along with the rest of the world who heard his idiocy on their TVs.
If only I could find a clip of the moment when Greg Norman turned to a fan behind the tee of a par 5 who had shouted 'Get in the hole!' after his drive, and said 'What a stupid thing to say. You must be an absolute moron' or similar...
If anyone's got the clip, the cash is here waiting.
this is the same clip that was posted above, just embedded. it was during his backswing, right before impact. total jackass move and the "fan" should be banned from attending any future events.
edit: i have to mention that Vijay still pulled off a great shot...too bad the putter let him down today.
I wish they would have flashed the camera over to the general area, there had to be fans around this jack a$$ that would have singled him out, I know that I would have been all over an idiot like that, I mean WTF was he thinking, Vij should have taken a B-line strait over to the guy, and really singled him out. PGA Tour should get all his information and black list his a** for every Tournement till the end of time.
I have no problem with anything said after the ball is hit such as you the man tigerrrrrrr or get in the hole (as long as it is reachable) But that guy should be lynched.
