Maintaining Triangle Without Tension

Working with a pro who prescribed the classic headcover under the arm pits drill to keep my arms more connected and maintain the triangle. However, I find this almost impossible to do without adding tension in the swing, which I have also always heard not to do. When I get to around 9 in the 9 to 3 drill and my right arm is at 90 degrees, I feel a lot of tension in my right bicep.

Has anyone ever had the same issue? How did you reconcile?

it helped me to think about it more as a semi-circle rather than a stiff triangle... gotta keep it supple

The way I approach keeping the triangle intact is to simply keep my arms straight as long as I can while turning back, but understanding that I need to simply let the right elbow fold in response to the tension. I'm not using my right bicep at all; it simply folds as I turn while keeping the left arm straight. if the tension seems problematic, you might simply stop the swing the swing there: if you're loaded into your right side and have some wrist c0ck, that's probably as much as you need to turn (assuming you've kept the club wide, which is promoted by focusing on maintaining the triangle).

There's no way to hit a ball without tension when you are holding things in your arm pits.

Should be the triceps muscle, which has to be more tense. IF you want to keep the triangle intact. I would assume that tension is felt for a couple of weeks till the muscle gains more strength and subconscious control.

Sounds like a flexibility issue. I used to have significant problems keeping my width in the backswing until I recently picked up the Most Important Stretch in Golf (MSIG) tool. Can't recommend it highly enough.

I think he is trying to ingrain a feel of staying connected, obviously you can't swing in exactly the same fashion.

Keeping my arms straight for too long is part of the reason why my coach put me in this drill in the first place. My long, low & slow takeaway was pulling my arms away from my body in the the backswing (the first move of my hands was further away from my body than at address) and pulling my head down. At the top, I would be too far inside.

You would probably be better thinking elbows rather than armpits

Stay loose and try the following to see which works best

Elbows point down

Elbows come together

Or soft ball between elbows or forearms depending on size of ball

Thanks for the insight. I haven't really checked to see if I'm doing something similar so it would behoove me to look on video. My assumption (hope?) is that my right arm folds in response to the tension in my arms, and as the right arm folds, the tension releases and my arms rise a bit. It's a work in progress.

Could being too inside when keeping the arms straight be more due to a shoulder turn that's too flat? Just a thought from someone who has made huge progress thanks to the keeping the arms straight feel

I find that drill terrible.  It makes the swing, tense, stiff and over connected.

Put a ball between your forearms.  That works a lot better.

Alright, spoiler alert, it will make you way inside both back and through.  You'll be inside out and hit hooks/pushes.  You won't overswing though, so you will have that going for you.  if you are an overswinging slicer it might actually be fun to go get your Zach Johnson on for a little while.

Yeah, I never liked the headcover thing.  Monte's ball idea is great as always.  I just try to imagine keeping the hands/club in front of my chest.
