Hey guys, new to the forum and need some assistance picking clubs.  I just got back into golf after about 7 year break.  I have been playing a used set of Strata Ultimate.  I picked up a new driver and 3 wood, Cobra King F7 with XLR8 Pro 61 shaft.  The stiff shaft hits way better for me then the Strata driver ever did.  My swing speed is around 102MPH.  I want to upgrade all my Strata clubs with stiff clubs, but i'm not sure what to get.  I want to keep my iron purchase around $350.  I am looking at some used sets and not really sure what would work best.  I don't track my handicap, but usually shoot around 45-50 on 9 holes.

Thanks,

Couple of options (there are many).

- Mizuno jpx ez forged (look on ebay for seller ksouth9) - going for $325 to $350

- Maltby TEs or DBMs - Come in club paks will assemble per your specs.

Bridgestone J15 Cast, Cobra F6, Taylormade Aeroburner, Callaway XR, Wilson C100/D100, just to name a few.  All can be had for your price range brand new from ebay.

Try searching and set your parameters: $350 max price, stiff shaft, iron set, etc.  Once you find some sets that look intriguing then come back here and search for info on them.  If you still have questions, then post up some specific questions.

For looks alone, not knowing anything about clubs and shopping on ebay.  I like the Nike VR Forged Pro.  Anything wrong with these?  I don't like colors on the irons.  I know that sounds stupid, but not knowing about clubs much can I just go by looks?

IMO, clubs have to look good to the eyes but unfortunately, can't be the only criteria.

I have to second the Wilson FG line for being a good value. I think you could easily find some Bridgestone old JPX mizunos in that range that would fit the bill nicely.

OP,

I played Mizuno MP irons for years.  Also had the S55's.  Truth:  get the Wilson FGv4's new on ebay auction.  Can be had for around $300 in am auction.  Look nice. Play great.

The $49.99 set of Adams CB with Project X 6.0 shafts I was set to win today on ebay until the jerk seller sold them locally via Craigslist...I'm still peeved about it!  :-)

Liked the Cobra F7's -- great price on those.

Hi Chev, and welcome!  I suggest you start by figuring out your irons shaft, then look for a nice used set in your price range with that shaft.  Go to any shop with a demo cart and a launch monitor, working with a fitter would be a big help.  But you'll know it when it feels right, and it may be the shaft more than the head.

If you end up in S300s, you'll have a lot of options, recommend Mizuno MP-H5s or older Titleist AP2s.  If it's something slightly lighter, like KBS Tour 120s, look for RocketBladez Tour, JPX-825 Pro, or Srixon Z 745 (...if you really luck out, those are as good as any irons out there).  Project X 6.0 might mean something Callaway, like an older X Forged.  And don't shy away from trying X100.  Finally, I really improved my game with Ping S56s and they're still really solid and affordable.

Cheers!

After my ten year golf layoff I got back into the game with the ping g series (g30 at that time) and could not have been happier. They got me back to being able to elevate the ball and get my basic feels back. Had them for about a year and a half before moving on. I know that the g series can be found used online as well as probably every golf store in the world with multiple shaftnoption at multiple price points.

If you're still scoring that on 9, where's your weak point? Going off your 9 hole scores you posted, Callaway X series, all the way back to the 12s would work. Also anything in the Ping G series would be good. You don't need the latest but with a $350 budget, lots of options , just have to find what fits your eye. Get on global golf and look at all their used irons. Best of luck in your search.

Great value can be had in finding a gently used set for pennies on the dollar.  With the number of club Ho's around, and I include myself as Chief among this tribe of sinners, you should be able to locate yourself a prized pig for peanuts.

So many options for that kind of budget... or even 1/3 of that.  As mentioned before, assess what you need help with and you can get more direction from the group.

As for blind suggestinos, JPX EZ Forged in the $350 range has already been mentioned.  For something easier on the budget, I had really good luck after a 4-5 year hiatus with Ping i15s... they were easy enough to hit yet I never felt they were "too GI" and preventing me from improving in any way.  I paid around $125 for the set, pulled and sold the KBS Tours for $50, and put in a $25 set of Dynalite Gold pulls making the net cost $100.  Even when I decided to go forged, I should have kept them in my second bag instead of selling them on.

Ping Eye 2, Zing or Zing 2.

Find your color code, then find a set a on Ebay. They are nearly indestructible, and the tech holds up really well. The shafts are solid, too. A new set of grips and you're good to go.

Mostly my mid game.  Iron's and Hybrids I don't hit so well.  I am not very accurate direction and distance.  I really have convinced myself it's the clubs(it's probably not) they feel flexy.  I hit a good tee shot with my new driver, usually about 270 and straight.  9 Iron and wedges hit well and I could use some work on putting.  I fixed my slice and have an occasional muff when I don't keep my head down, noobie amateur stuff really.  For the most part I strike the ball well.

If you're still scoring that on 9, where's your weak point?

Mostly my mid game.  Iron's and Hybrids I don't hit so well.  I am not very accurate direction and distance.  I really have convinced myself it's the clubs(it's probably not) they feel flexy.  I hit a good tee shot with my new driver, usually about 270 and straight.  9 Iron and wedges hit well and I could use some work on putting.  I fixed my slice and have an occasional muff when I don't keep my head down, noobie amateur stuff really.  For the most part I strike the ball well.
Based on this alone, any Ping G, older to save some cash, or current models. Also the Adams Blue would be a wise choice. Do a search of reviews on the Blue, they get good reviews.
