Watched him hit both days this weekend...if I hadn't heard about his distance, I would have said he was one of the weaker players on the US squad...btw, all the players kill the ball...there aren't many short hitters anymore!

From my very limited experience watching these youngsters this weekend, I'd put money on Thornberry to make it on tour...homemade swing, lots of grit.  Reminds of Patrick Reed, but hits a fade.  Brief conversation with Spider Miller (team captain) he seemed to agree.

Any thoughts on the two Scottish players, Syme and MacIntyre? Both are well ranked (8 & 14 respectively) and Scotland badly needs a player(s) to transition into the top level of the professional game.

I asked one of the members of the GB&I team who their strongest player was and he mention Syme...FWIW.  Unfortunately, I had a difficult time telling many of them apart aside from the lefty!

Agreed on Thornberry and appreciate that he has his own unique swing.  I think he's going to be a rich man's JB Holmes type of player.

But... but... but... he hits it so FAR!!  He's going to be a superstar.

At least with the WRX crowd.

It's interesting to see how many are consumed by driving distance, and not just on WRX.  The TV talkers are also consumed by it.

Meanwhile, Champ got toasted (6 and 4) by a much shorter hitter as he was six over par for 14 holes.

Champ went 1-2-1 for the week.  Meanwhile, three shorter hitters went 4-0-0.  Go figure.

Bombing the ball is highly entertaining.  But low scores still win.

its almost as if lowest score wins or something? its golf not golf swing. I tell my students that all the time but they still want to try and bomb it or have a "prettier swing". The fact is the more clubhead speed you have the samller your margin for error. A 10 yard push when swinging 100-105mph on a driver becomes a 30 yard push when swinging 120+. you have a shorter club in all thetime but playing out of the rough or from the trees is tough on a tough day especially in matchplay.
Champ has freakish speed and potential and i wish him luck but distance isnt the end all.

Yes, too bad for him that golf isn't a long drive contest.  Low score wins.  Longest drive ...  not so much.

What's in his bag?

-Ping G400 Driver
-Taylormade M2 3-Metal
-Ping iBlade irons 3-PW
-Titlelist Vokey wedges
-Scotty Cameron putter

Anyone have any more details? Mainly just curious what driver shaft he plays....driver stats would be cool to see too. Heard somewhere he's at like a 7* launch and 3000rpm?

He could be. At his speed he can manage launching the ball a lot lower. The high spin wouldn’t be too surprising either since a lot of players actually want to spin the ball a hair more than optimum to keep the ball in play.

And now he's a pro.

His pro debut will be  this week in Mexico.

Good luck to him. Hopefully, he will be an exciting addition to pro golf.
Interesting that Cameron talks about his “slingshot” move. That’s the exact move Tiger has pretty much always used to get distance, and Haney tried desperately to get rid of it. Kind of ironic that Foley, of all people, is doing something Haney would do.

Former professional golfer. Current amateur human being. Reformed club ho.
