Is Scotty Cameron losing his grip on the putter industry? It seems so. Recent designs have shifted towards large mallets taking after other manufacturers. Even newer versions of classic designs such as the Newport have lost the luster and luxury feel that older models had. Is Titleist/Cameron shifting towards the mass-consumerist approach, chasing the profits and getting away from their roots? They may be chasing the $ now but in the end it may be a fatal blunder. The rise of custom putter companies and competition between them has made them more prevalent and much more popular. Scotty continues to keep putters locked up in the glass at retail stores while the newest Bettinardi line sits out next to it, asking to be tried out. What's the market for a Cameron putter now? Custom market is flooded with highly skilled putter makers alongside equal or greater quality milled putter companies at a lower pricepoint. The mid-price putter market is owned by Odyssey and even Cleveland. How much longer will people pay for the Scotty Cameron name?

No, I don't really think so; after the golf equipment business burns down some more, many of the boutique guys will be gone and Scotty will still be around.

You do know that Don "T" Cameron does not the own the brand Scotty Cameron? If he were to start making putters (I am sure You realice he does not stamp all the putters he sells for several thousands) he could not use "Scotty Cameron" or "Cameron" on any of them?

They sell more putters for more money than anyone else, so I think they're doing all right.

Expensive sunglasses are locked in cases too, but if you ask an employee to unlock it, they're very accommodating.

I personally don't think there is anything to worry about with Scotty.  I am not a fan of the newer products myself but people will always buy the name and the 'prestige' that it brings with.  I also think they do own enough market share that they really don't have anything to worry about.  Who do you think would be there to challenge them?

Regardless of how anyone feels about Scotty Cameron and his business, like Mark Twain - 'reports of his demise are greatly exaggerated'.

There is still no feel like a Scotty when hit in the centre - imo.  The problem is Scotty needs some more innovation.  With groove and face technology all the crazy right now, scotty has not done anything new.   I hit my Newport and still think, damn that is a sweet feeling putter- but I am two feet short.  I hate the sound of o works and evnroll but am in 6 inch gimmie territory.

Scotty will always be precevied to be a premier putter maker by the majority of golfers. Not everyone visits this site.

Scotty has peaked and is on a downhill slide, mark my words. They are just fleecing everyone (the lemmings anyway) now. The best Camerons are the ones over 10 years old.

Yeah I don't know if this is the case at all. It could even be that Scotty is growing in popularity as I'm are seeing more and more of his mallets in the hands of golfers who need some more help than what he traditionally offered. For all the success of the Spider of late I'm not seeing any around in comparison to the new Futura's. I think at the moment the Cameron spot at the top of the market is pretty safe.

I work in a golf shop and we very rarely have someone come in and ask about s scotty when we do though 90% of the time they buy.
We did have 2 tour spider putters in red which both sold the week after the masters. Personally I notice more players using scottys than I do the tour spiders might be because the spiders are like golf dust in the uk. Tmag are sold out till the end of the year.

I prefer the models of Cameron putters that are from 2006 and before.  Anything after 2006 is very ugly looking and over milled.

Every Scotty is expensive and indeed the market that will pay that is limited so I wasn't suggesting there are more Scotty's than anything else. But as you say of the people who ask about a Scotty the percentage who then buy is high which I think reflects the premium segment is reasonably secure for him.

Indeed it may simply be due to availability of the Spider but for raw numbers I see a heap more Scotty's on course than any other premium putter. But overall they dwarf to the larger market of under $250 putters on the market.

To me (and others I'm sure) Scotty has been ho hum since 2007.  There's nothing of real interest coming from him even in relation to the Studio.  This isn't a slam on him, his business model, or anything else, just a casual observation from a regular guy...

Taylor Made's recent success in the Putter market will be interesting to watch. Many of the top players are using the spider Putter, and while its expensive, it's similar to Scotty prices.

Scotty hasn't had any competition because a big name company hasn't made a high end Putter that has been used by a lot of players on tour.

Odyssey has had a lot of success, but they have always been a mid price point company. Many

Many people who purchase a Cameron do so because it's the best Putter that everyone knows about. There are other lesser known companies that make putters that are just as good, but when you're on the putting green with a Scotty, everyone knows it's a Scotty.

But now the top players that used to use Cameron's are switching to Taylor Made. The same guy who has purchased a Newport for the last 15 years, even though he can't break 90, is going to want to be the guy on the putting green using the expensive Putter that DJ, Day, Sergio, Rory etc are using.

He's not going away, but there will be more competition. I would compare him to 3 series BMWs 20 years ago. The dominated the entry level luxury market and still do very well. But now there's more competition.
