Hey guys.  My family will be visiting Bay Harbor Michigan in Mid July for a family vacation.  There will be 4 of us guys who love golf and we will be playing.  Unfortunately during our time there Bay Harbor golf course will be closed due to a tournament.  We have played it before and enjoyed it.  We are playing crooked tree the first day as a warm up.  We are searching for a premier course for day 2.  We don't mind driving an hour one way.  We do have some connections and can get in to some private clubs.  We have already played Arcadia, Forest dunes, lochenheath and bayharbor, and also we have played all the Tree Tops courses.  And would rather not play those again at this time.  Thus far its between True North and Kingsley club.  Unfortunately we can't get onto to Crystal Downs, as that would be a no brainer.  So my question is what do you guys recommend between True North and Kingsley?  Are they even worth the price?  IS there a better club you guys recommend?  Thanks and feel free to add any other suggestions!

Wow.....those are both amazing tracks.  Kingsley is a better course in my opinion but not by much and its alot farther away.  Kingsley is more wide open and plays really fast and firm.  True North is alot closer and is cut through the woods with lots of elevation change.  Both are great courses so I guess it depends if you really want to drive all the way to Kingsley from Petoskey.

One last option you may want to consider is Black Lake in Onaway Michigan.  Its probably a 40 minute drive from Petoskey and is a top 5 public course in Michigan.  Its cut through a thick woods and is one of the most beautiful courses you can find in Northern Michigan.

If it were me I would drop Crooked Tree and either play the Arthur Hills Course @ Boyne or the Heather at Boyne......as both are far better than CT.  Little Traverse bay is another course that is awesome.  Enjoy!

Kingsley 100 times over and twice on Sunday.

And also agree, drop the round at Crooked Tree and add a round at the Arthur Hills course at Boyne or at Belvedere in Charlevoix.
If you are staying at Bay Harbor, you are basically half way in between Belvedere and Boyne Highlands.  Drive time to both would be comparable.

The bear is brutal and is one of the most difficult courses in Northern Michigan.  It feels to much like a resort course to me rather than a Northern Michigan course.  Its fun but its way to difficult for the average golfer.

Bear sucks - they should start over with that land.  It was a cash grab at the time and it worked for a while.

Thanks guys for all the comments.  Kingsley sounds amazing.  Im also going to consider Black Lake.  We actually have a 3rd day in which we could make that happen.

Drop Crooked Tree and do something else. Played it several years ago and it's not terrible, but nothing close to the others mentioned.

Little Traverse Bay Golf Club.  Played it last Friday.  Awesome topography and was in fantastic shape.  Great little track that can become challenging depending where you put it on the green.

Kingsley Club, no debate necessary.

Belvedere Country Club in Charlevoix is worth your time in looking at too... really solid track. Used to be the host of the Michigan Am

well the only reason were doing crooked tree as a warmup is that we are staying in a condo there and we have 4 complimentary rounds there.

No one has mentioned Forest Dunes or Arcadia Bluffs? It's been awhile, but I don't remember them being too far from Bay Harbor. Definitely worth the drive for either one. Also, both in greatest 100 public courses list.

Kingsley has a big-time wow-factor. Little Traverse Bay is a blast, but the conditioning won't rival Kingsley. I think they re-did Crooked Tree recently, so hopefully it's better than most people remember it.

I'm taking my wife and kids up there in July as well and we're playing Crooked Tree, the Heather, and the Ross Memorial. I've played all of the Boyne courses previously and most in northern Mich, but I've never played Crooked Tree. If nothing else, the views of the bay should be great. I actually like the Ross and Heather better than the Hills.
