  • Race to the CME Globe: 500 Points
  • Format: 72 holes
  • Purse: $2,000,000
  • Location: Blythefield Country Club, Grand Rapids, MI
  • Par: 71
  • Yardage: 6,451
  • History: In 2016, on the first playoff hole, Sei Young Kim stuffed her approach shot from the left rough to three feet and calmly tapped in the birdie putt to defeat Carlota Ciganda and capture her fifth LPGA victory at the Meijer LPGA Classic for Simply Give. This is the 3rd year for the event.
Coverage:
  • Jun 15: Golf Channel 4:00 - 7:00 pm (EDT)
  • Jun 16: Golf Channel 4:00 - 7:00 pm (EDT)
  • Jun 17: Golf Channel 3:00 - 6:00 pm (EDT)
  • Jun 19: Golf Channel 12:00 - 3:00 pm (EDT)

Hmmm, it appears that the final round coverage will be delayed until Monday. I assume this is because The Golf Channel will have wall-to-wall coverage of the U.S. Open on Sunday. Check your local listings and DVR settings.

I think this will be a three way shootout between Lexi, Lydia, and In Gee. Lexi won the event in 2015, and finished 4T last year. She's coming off a strong week that she should have walked away with the trophy. Lydia also finished 4T last year, and should be itching to reclaim the #1 spot. In Gee finished 3rd last year, and has two 2nd place finishes in the past 3 events. That said, I wouldn't count out Ariya.

It's tough to go up against the US Open, but it speaks well for the LPGA that can do so.  Up until last year (if I remember correctly), this had always been an off week.

Looks like a pretty good field as well. Should be some great golf, maybe enough people dislike Fox's coverage and will switch over to watch this tournament on GC instead.

Actually the final group should be done by 3pm eastern, about the same time as the final group in US Open tee off. ( according to TV schedule)

Thanks to Lydia we get the live GC feed here all the time so even when you get delayed coverage ours is usually still live. I know MW is still a popular player and recently been showing some better form and now is just back into the RR top 50 but is it fair to all the other players who work just as hard off course to improve their play that she gets privileged groupings to start the tournaments? Sponsorship is no doubt easier if your being covered by the broadcast and being able to play with much higher ranked players is always good for experience so is the LPGA being fair to lesser known and even higher RR players by favouring MW in the pairings? I am sure some the younger up and coming LPGA players would love to be paired with Lydia and Lexi this week but realise it just isn't going to happen and for them I feel the LPGA is not doing them justice.

GC and LPGA just care about the american market and making money. They do not care about the game or the players at all. So Yeon top 3 in the world is regularly paired with the scrubs. Same with Sung Hyun who is top 10 in the world. She never has a chance to make it to TV unless she is leading deep into the tournament.

It's crazy how bad they treat top players who don't fit the mold of what they are looking for.

I'm not losing sleep over the lower ranked players. An occasional appearance on TV isn't going to attract sponsorship. Playing better, making cuts, and finishing high are going to do that.

I do believe the higher ranked players would have a beef, though. As ingeeisgod notes, numerous high ranking players get crummy pairings, and rarely see a TV camera. When is the last time we saw Mirim Lee or Amy Yang, currently 12th and 16th in CME points?

Michelle attracts crowds and TV audiences, regardless of how she's playing.

That's BS. Give one example of her being paired with scrubs this year.

I would never call any player a scrub.  I figure they're all awesome just to make it this far.

That said, I found So Yeon's positioning at the Shoprite just downright mysterious.  If she'd won that tournament she could have been the new #1 in the whole world.  Major news.  And she got kind of buried, at least time-wise.  Like burying the lead.  That one did have me wondering what was up and why?  (of course So Yeon then goes and misses her first cut in ages and gets outperformed by that very pairing, so it just goes to show!)

Back to the present, a Lexi - Lydia - In Gee showdown would be another amazing finish, just like last week.  (Wish that Sudden Death Arena Gladiator Match had lasted longer, it was such a great grouping.)  This season we've had such a wide field, and now it feels like a wide ranging battle up at the top 5.  I hope Lydia is feeling ok about the ranking change.  Will be good to see her back well rested.

I'm cheering for In-Kyung as always!  I also have a simple, not-huge hope that I'm really hoping for and don't even want to mention.  Thinking as good thoughts as I can send.

Hopefully this is another fun one, and everyone gets some neat food too.

Here comes another birdie fest. Three players at -5 after 7 to 9 holes. Of the 72 players out on the course, 57 are at even par or better. It's still early, but it is telling.

Not sure how the Ladies do it but the mens is based on wins-not rankings.  Bunch of top 10's do not get you featured pairings. First two rounds this week SH Park is paired with Lincicome and Salas. If she wants to get paired with the other top  players she needs to win on the LPGA.
As to TV time that is ratings-and US ratings at that when blaming the GC. So yeah, they will show the US ladies disproportionately for ratings and favorites like Wie get more time.

Lexi still has her foot on the gas. -8 after 14 holes. 'Pretty impressive stretch of golf these past few weeks.

Lydia is off to a great start at -6 after 14 holes. Hopefully she's changed her tactics and dumped the slow-and-steady-out-of-the-gate approach.

Here's this morning's trivia quiz:  Jerry Foltz mentioned yesterday that of the ten players who've ever been number one, six are in this field.

Looking only at the leaderboard, who's in and who's out?  I know the four who aren't in, and I've got five who are.  Middle-aged brain strikes again.

My answers below, in white font.

Out:  Annika Sorenstam, Lorena Ochoa, Jiyai Shin, Ai Miyazato

In: Lydia Ko, Aria Jutanugarn, Inbee Park, Stacy Lewis, Yani Tseng, and ???  Was Cristie Kerr ever number one?  Na Yeon Choi?  Who I am missing?

Stacy seems to have cooled today. She was -7 yesterday, but only even par after 13 holes today. There are a number of players at -4 to -6 for the day, so the course doesn't appear to be playing that much harder.

That's been her modus operandi lately. She always seems to have a ho-hum round in her bag during the course of the tournament.

'Nice round by Moriya. The focus is clearly on her younger sister, but Moriya is quietly putting together her best season yet.

Sung Hyun in the hunt (again). She has to bust through at some point.

'Nice round by Moriya. The focus is clearly on her younger sister, but Moriya is quietly putting together her best season yet.

Sung Hyun in the hunt (again). She has to bust through at some point.
I agree on Moriya.  She is spending a lot of time on the first page of leaderboards this year.  You get the feeling a win is coming soon for her and I hope so.

Hate to say it but this is the week I'm watching the men's tour over the ladies.

It was nice taking a break from the US Open coverage and seeing the ladies play.

I'm pro-Moriya too!  It would be great for her to get a win.

I'm happy for Brooke to be seeing the top again.

I'm cheering for MJ!  I hope we get to see some of her.

I'm happy Sei Young made the cut since she's defending.

Most of all, I'm super happy Hee Young made the cut!  Thank goodness, I was very much hoping.  Like a cloud lifting.

The first cut she has made since the Bahamas.
