I've been trying to buy a driver on eBay, but I keep getting outbid at the last second.  I'm doing OK, then all of a sudden literally at the last second the price get run up by someone who hadn't previously been bidding.  I've never successfully bought anything on eBay before, so I don't understand how this game is played.  Any tips?

Some folks use what's called a snipe/sniper program - it bids for you just seconds before auction ends.  Here's one example program below:

https://www.gixen.com/index.php

JPX-900 driver, 3 wood, 4 hybrid
900 Tour 5, 7, 9, PW irons; T7 SW & Mizuno Bullseye Flange
WITB

This is dead on OP.

When you setup your snipe just make sure you have maxed out - whatever you would bid max if you were live and in-person, set up the snipe. And don't forget to read the terms of the sale with an emphasis on shipping charges.

Last, but not least, see if you can find your driver in a Buy It Now auction at or under the price you are willing to spend. And I would also look here for it on the BST. Bargains to be had there and you could also post a "Wanted To Buy" in there with your exact driver and see if anyone has one at your price. Just be sure to ask for actual images from all angles. And DO NOT gift any Paypal payment - period.

My method:

1. Determine the maximum you would pay for the item
2. Bid that amount with 2 sec left
3. Live with the result

I always put a massive bid in with about 30 seconds to go and hope no one else has the same idea or you will pay the massive bid price.

Its an auction sniping account, you get 5 bids a week at no charge.  I have used it for years.  Drops your max bid 10 sec before the end.

I do basically the same thing except I don't bother to wait until the last second.  If I see something I like, I bid my max.  If I'm outbid right away I move on.

If I can't wait for the end of the auction, I look for BIN auctions or used club sites.

Haha, people give me the eye when I say I snipe at 6 seconds and here you're
doing it at 2. I don't like auto sniping either; it's more fun to snipe myself. It's fun
to hit that button in the last few seconds.

If I am really interested in something I'll do the same and set an alert on my phone then see what things look like in the last minute.
To the OP, sometimes you can fall victim to shill bidding. I won't out the seller, but a few years ago, a well known pre-owned club dealer was definitely engaging in the practice. I had a friend once ask me to bid on his item to drive up the price. I refused.

i was trying to bid 31.69 for a driver head once and ended up bidding 3169 dollars on accident.  Luckily you weren't bidding because i only ended up having to pay 65 + shipping for it...

Gixen works well from what I have heard.  I usually wait until 2-3 secs left and put in a bid.  If it doesnt work, I wasnt meant to have it.

How a snipe works is you send me money and I keep it.  That's equal to 1 point.  10 points is a Big Snipe and 100 well that's a vacatio... Errr I mean a Super Snipe!

I allow 4 seconds as there have been times at 2 that I miss getting the bid in at all. But yes, same method for me too.

My last two auctions were BIN with a "Make Offer" option.

In both cases they accepted my offers. One putter (Versa 9 in awesome condition with HC for $50 shipped) and a hand wrap that was listed BIN for $9.95 plus shipping and I got it for $10 to my house.

Just another nice option for making purchases on eBay. So long as the offer you are making is reasonable considering their asking, odds are pretty good they will accept it.
