Why DON'T you play Titleist, or other popular OEMs?

After reading the why do you play titleist thread I was interested in hearing reasons why people don't play them. Personally I would happily play titleist for quality, but price and me being a non conformist steers me towards other brands. Same goes for Ping irons, tm and cally drivers and Scotty putters. I don't play ProVs either because they are so popular and it is easy for others to hit your ball, and because I'm not an idiot who likes paying double.

I know the new Wilson irons this year are excellent but I wouldn't game anything Wilson. I just associate Wilson with cheap big box store clubs and it spoils the brand for me.

I guess I like bag appeal? Or maybe I'm just a ****** who knows lol ;)

That is the problem with Wilson since day one when they started coming out with higher end equipment.  No one would pay $300 for a driver, when Taylormade, Callaway, Ping, Titleist, etc. also had $300 drivers!  This was way back many years ago when I was involved in a golf store!  The sad part was they actually had some solid equipment back then.  I don't know if that is the case now cause it has been many years but can't imagine is it any easier selling wise.  I am sure they still make some solid gear though!

Padraig was winning alot and he seemed to be the major Wilson guy then!  :)

I'm brand loyal to the companies who helped me as a junior.

Titleist was not one of those companies.

I don't dislike them, as I've used their products before, but I don't really have a desire to use them.

I carry a Titleist hybrid and usually play used Pro V1s, but up until then:
  • Price. All of their clubs are consistently priced higher than comparable clubs (though they get a pass for this now that PXG is around).
  • While growing up it seemed to be a snobbish brand from my perspective (probably something to do with 1).
There have been a lot of Titleist clubs I would have loved to play growing up. I don't play or try enough clubs to form a real bias for or against any brand performance wise.

I dont play Titleist because the performance, quality and design of them doesnt impress me.  I used to play nothing but Titleist in the late '90s and early '00s but last year I bought a set of AP1s and hated them.

I don't use Titleist either. So much hype amongst my golfing group, but used some ap2, vokeys and scotties and didn't think much of them. Especially for the price they go for.

I don't play Titleist because I haven't found anything that I've tested from them which suits my game better than what I already had in the bag. I did like the 18 degree F2 917 fairway but it just wasn't better for me than the XR16 and I snagged that at half the price.

Love all Titleist products, but because of price, I don't game them. If price was no object, I would go full bag of Titleist stuff for sure! ;)

My irons are not manufactured by a popular/major OEM. I chose them because didn't want a cheap set of mass produced irons.

I don't play titleist because it's overrated garbage. Titleist/Acer IMO. It's a fanboy brand. I sample their new stuff every year and it's nothing to write home about. Vanilla.

Their older stuff was superior though.

I could put the Titleist CB's in my bag tomorrow (they are a very nice club), but they just don't match the performance of my Srixons.

I recently was a Titleist Driver player, but the 917 did not match the performance of the SZ. I do still play a titleist hybrid, it is one of the best hybrids I have played.

As for putters, the Khombi S is just very comfortable for me. But it could be replaced.

So for me it is just performance. For the most part, I think they make great equipment, but it just has to work for you.

I play Cameron putters, but I have never really given them any association to titleist clubs
That said I can't play titleist because they are one of the MFGs that if I play one of their clubs I will feel like I need a full bag of their clubs.
And having a full bag of titleist clubs would make me feel like a super homer.

Also aside from a Cameron putter and vokeys....I can't say that I ever see anyone in real life playing titleist clubs

On the idiot scale, they're probably right next to the people who don't play a particular brand because it's popular, regardless of whether it's the best fit for their game.

Not all that impressed by Titleists tech/innovations over the past decade to be honest. Ever since the 910 series they seem to be behind a bit. The second they come out with a driver or club that is better than what's out there now then I will play them. I do love their branding and the image they have cultivated. The older Scotty's are still special. I have no hate for Titleist or any other brand. I play what works.

Agree. Seems that the real conformist in this situation is the one that knocks titleist because they are not muira or edel or some other obscure brand that is "cool" because it's expensive and wrx raves about it.

Titleist has always seemed to be the player's club to me. I find many of their clubs to be demanding, but of the highest quality. Cost has kept me away, in addition to looking for a bit of compromise on forgiveness.

I used to think Nike was all hype. I remember when Phil said Tiger was playing "inferior" equipment and agreed with him. Well, I bought the last driver they made and now I regret not trying their other clubs over the years.

Right now I'm playing JDM, prgr's. Thinking I will probably go back to the clubs I first fell in love with, Mizzys. But if I can find a decent set of AP2‘s for a great price I may go Titleist.

See i play Titleist but I agree with this. They late innovations have been nothing crazy to me. SM6 are good and the prov1 of course has been good but you are correct nothing earth shattering. Hence maybe why I play 15 year old Titleist blades and get better performance and feel then new ap2 etc? I don't know but I am probably one of the crazy all Titleist fan boys but I would like to see some ground breaking stuff soon.  I've already started to go after from their drivers and scottys. Going to try forged wedges soon so we shall see. Miura blades maybe? who knows

I've never gotten along with Titleist clubs. I'll play the ProV1 and ProV1X without any issues but the drivers just feel dead to me. Could be the specific heads I've hit but they're never in the running when I'm upgrading clubs. The AP2's were nice but didn't outperform my Cobra's or Callaway Apex Pro's when I was testing.

I will play any brand club (OEM/Component), shaft, grip, ball, shoe, tee, etc if I feel it might help me improve. Including price differences with some gear. For years and years too many peoples egos and stubbornness have got in the way of playing/trying certain brands of equipment that MIGHT help them improve. Silly.

I don't play Titleist clubs because I have a slower swing speed and cannot seem to get any distance with their drivers compared to other brands. I like the generally compact size of their fairway woods but they were always too unforgiving on mis-hits for me.

I also avoided Taylor Made during the whole white-head driver fad as I could not stand that color on a club.
