I was just reading a thread here about ball-hawking.  I search for my own ball in the bushes a lot.  (My game is really, er, inconsistent.)  And i occasionally(!) find a lost ball or two.  I never keep them.  I believe I need to stay with one brand, the same model, of ball to dial in my game.

Do any of the rest of you feel like I do, or do you happily play your found golf balls?

I usually give them away to other people in the group.

Exceptions are if it's a new pro v1 (the ball I play) I'll keep it because you might as well right? Or if it's in good shape and something I want to try I might use it for a few holes.

I typically am the same way. If it's a nice ball (pro v, chrome soft etc) in good shape, why not keep it? Any others and I'll give them to a group member.

I used to play any and everything I found, and it didn't really matter what it was. Now I like to play one golf ball for a consistency effect. Routine is important in the game of golf, doing the same things over and over again when it works out well for you. I really think that most golfers could use any and all golf balls they find, but for the sake of the mental part of the game one golf ball is a good thing to do.

I play found balls if it is something I would normally game. Cally Warbirds, NO, as an example. Basically, anything 'cheap' and are rocks not going to game them. Usually throw them some where someone else can find them so they might have a chance to play them?! ;)

I'll play some found balls as it gives me an opportunity to 'try out' a ball I would not usually buy.

Like most others, it depends on the ball.

I'll pick up just about any found ball, then either wack them away, or give them to my one buddy who lives to hit extra balls into the abyss.

Even with that disposal method, I end up having to purge my bag every couple of weeks to lighten it up. Those extra balls go into a milk crate (#2) in the garage.

Like new premium balls, or strange balls that must be demoed, will get played until lost, damaged or shanked.

I will play an as-found ball on holes with high risk of being lost..but generally no. Only because I don't know if the previous owner fished it out of a lake.

This 'fished out of a lake' or 'depends on the condition' does interest me.  I read on this site somewhere that if a ball has been in the water a week, it's toast, basically.  So, how long does a ball play well if it's been subject to the elements in the bushes?

And, to open another can of worms, I often buy recycled balls of my model on the -bay.  How am I to know if there isn't a lake ball in my AAAA or AAAAA rated selection?

I tend to keep them and play them as backup balls only. ex. If I'm having a rough round and I've lost a few that I paid for...I'll start using those.

Used to use all found balls all the time as I would lose a great number of them.

Now that I'm four years into the game, I have two or three I like to consistently play (B330 is my go to)  but will keep a decent non-callaway ball when I play in the weekly scramble.

It makes a difference, this I'm sure of, just not sure the interval needed to impact this. AND there is no way to know how long a ball has been underwater before the "recovery team" extracts it for re-sale. When people talk about consistency, water would have a larger impact than credible variations in material properties. Second hand prov1's for somebody who has the game to "demand constancy" is an interesting thought, IMO

Pretty much the same here. I'll bounce around from ball to ball in the same general category, but when i find balls I know are abandoned, I'll give them to my son.

I'm always cautious though, I'm still stung by the bozo who waltzed into my fairway to pick up my Duo Spin last summer and then tore off when we started yelling that it was my ball. I guess even if I find a ball in the woods I'm half expecting some guy to pop up and start yelling that I touched his ball.

I play Srixon AD333 Tour, but to everyone else its just Srixon. I often get given Srixon Distance/Soft Feel golf balls.
Partner plays Yellow or PRO V1.
Partner 2 plays anything 'decent'
Partner 3 players callaway.

Based on this depends who get the found ball.

If you took the Pepsi challenge and removed the logo off all balls you probably couldn't tell the difference.  Find'em and play'em.

I tried a Volvik Vivid I found last week.  Learned I don't want to buy them.  Too high, less distance.

I'll play something I find if I like the ball.  If not I chip it to a lake or something.

Some of the new ones dissapear into oblivion on their very first flight as well.  😆

I play balls that I find that appear to be in mint or very good condition.  Balls left in freezing woods or ponds would lose their specifications over time.

If the ones I find are in decent shape I toss them in a coffee can I have in the back of the car. I used those when I play practice rounds where I have the time to hit a couple balls off each tee. This is how I find out if the ball could fit my game or not. I have found a decent amount that I would play if I would find them at a decent price.

If it's a ball I know I don't like I will leave them behind , usually in the cup for the next person to see if they want to take a whack at them

Depends on what ball I find. I sometimes give them away and sometimes I play them.  I found  TP5X and decided to play it... without doing that I wouldn't have found out how awesome they are-- not a TM guy but have to give credit where credit is due.

Personally, I have never found a golf ball that seem to be affected bye laying for an extended period in the elements of weather. I usually don't play found golf balls unless they are the high-quality urethane balls like the Pro V1, Bridgestone b330, Etc. I would like to know, if anybody who cares to respond, that has played a found golf ball that they feel has been compromised by the environment in which they founded in? I'm not talking about golf balls that are missing part of their cover or whatever, I'm talking about golf balls that look good when they're cleaned up.

depends. I sometimes play with someone who doesn't care about the ball so he'll get all non-premium balls I find. the good ones I'll keep for my shag bag to practice.

I will put a found ball in play periodically. Played a scramble recently and found a new Nike PD Long with the red logo. Put it in play because I figured I might hit it longer off the tee. Ended up getting my first ever Albatross with it on about my 3rd hole using it. Ball was a good bit longer, but also a bit straighter than my normal ball.

If you took the Pepsi challenge and removed the logo off all balls you probably couldn't tell the difference.  Find'em and play'em.

Until I blast some rock hard no spin ball 15 yards over the green, that is.

Even my wife can tell the difference between urethane and non-urethane around the green.  Put all the urethanes in a bucket and you might have a case.

That said, I keep every ball I find, just so I can hit them into the rotation of balls on my league course, since the average range ball seems to be from the LBJ Administration.
