I play once a week normally, twice if I'm lucky. It isn't quite enough but I don't quite have enough time to play more. Even if I had all the time in the world I would probably only up to to 3 rounds a week.

It's funny that the rise in green fees always over and above where everything else is.

I had a discussion with a key member of a local management team ( manage about a dozen golf courses ) , I know the guy from when he just started in the biz, so I was candid about what my thoughts are.
I told him that the green fees is chasing out all the retired folks whom are the root of the support for the golf courses ( they virtually lived on the golf course ).  Of course I got the other side of the story from him....... City and County and the State is increasing "FEES" to the golf courses.  Add on tax, sales tax luxury tax and user's tax...He told me that they'll have go up another 10% in 2018 just based on the mandatory minimum wage increase.  Minimum wage increase is not just effecting the minimum wage earner.  If a newbie makes $15/hr, how could they pay another guy with more experience just a few dollars over that ?
Ripple effect that everyone feels when trickle down through the whole business.  But the tax man does not care because they are facing the same issue of not getting enough for what they spend.

No wonder the prediction for golf course closure continued into the near future with another 3,000- 5,000 closure foretasted.
Like the majority of the golfers, I too, have a budget for recreation.  With everything squeezing in to this allowance, plus the increase in fees,..... I'm not on the golf course as much as I like to.   Soon, unless they invent wheelchair golf, they will not see me on the golf course at all.

My issue is simply one of time.

Golf is very important to me, but it has to come after family and career (which is also golf!), and I need to do a better job of creating time to play.

+1. I also work in the golf business and most people think being a Club Pro means you play all the time lol not always the case but I do usually play at least once a week which is more than a lot of club pros get to play.
As you walk down the fairway of life you must smell the roses, for you only get to play one round.

I'm able to play at least five days a week, as long as the weather is cooperative. I'm divorced and my three daughters are grown.(the younger two play, also) I belong to two courses within 15 minutes of the house and I work Monday through Thursday. A normal week is handicap league on Monday, men's league on Thursday, eighteen Friday, 27 with the crew on Saturday and our normal skins game on Sunday. I'm very lucky. I guess I'm making up for the 15 years of coaching softball and watching kids grow up. Once upon a time, I looked forward to playing three or four times a year.

Been there.  I will not regret family time taking over golfing time.  Kids grow up so fast, I could remember them wearing diapers and training pants.....
Was kind of missing golf but looking back, those were the best of time.

I voted the weather because the courses around here are usually closed mid October to mid April, which equates to a 6 month season.
I tend to overplay in the 6 month stretch of open and then pine away for the winter.
A 9 month season would suit me perfectly, and I will see that in a few years when I retire from work.

Even though my wife tells me play all I want, I feel guilty spending what I do on the game.
Currently recovering from a low back injury from getting rear ended last month, and am planning on my first round since 12/26 on Monday.
We don’t have kids and make good $$, but golf takes a lot of practice time as well.

I went into civil engineering in the Wyoming/South Dakota area. I am still on site during construction season, which unfortunately runs exactly as long as the golf season does. Makes playing consistently difficult.

i'm lucky if I get 20 rounds a year in. Honestly on some level, I enjoy banging balls on the range or putting green a lot more. In 2 hours I can ht major amount of balls at a leisurely pace, get satisfaction and get back to real life fast. A round is a 5-6 hour commitment, when I retire I'll play a ton more and stress about HCP then..

My body just can't do it anymore day after day.

GETTING old and falling apart, no matter how well you eat and exercise, sucks!

One of our pals is 8/9 years older than us. When he needed new knees we ribbed him, as guys do. He said then, " you wait until you turn 55, things start seizing up, dropping off and wearing out " he was right. Healthwise I've been lucky but time will always win.

I love golf passionately but I only end up playing 20-25 rounds a year(I am so jealous hearing about how frequently some of you guys get to play).  I live in Western New York so first off there is the seasonal aspect for me.  I only get to play from April-October.  Another aspect for me is time and finances, I make a modest living but even if I had more free time I don't think I could really justify spending more money on golf than I already do.  Once the season gets here the goal is to always try to play once a week but there are some weeks I just can't get out but at the same time there are other weeks where I am fortunate to get out at least a couple times so it pretty much averages out to be once a week.  The cool thing though about not playing as frequently as I'd like to is that I am very appreciative and "in the moment" every time I do get out to play and it really makes for an enjoyable day.

A knee injury last year limited my golf severely. I have played a little, but have to be very careful now. I hope to play in a few months, the weather is horrible, wet and very cold. The courses have all but shut down for now. Hopefully this spring I can get going again, but at a slower rate. I am not playing until I see 60*F dry weather.

I used to play 5-6 rounds a week (not an exaggeration) because I subconciously used golf as an escape from a bad marriage. Having gotten divorced and now found the right one, I play maybe twice a month and am perfectly happy with that. Saves me money, and I quite enjoy the time I get with my wife.

What about the increase in fighting on public courses?

All of these jacked-up “energy” drinks and male enhancement pills are at least partially to blame, in my opinion.  Take a frustrating game like golf, add in a caffeinated attitude with a dash of synthetic testosterone booster and you have the makings for a fairway brawl.

I usually managed two rounds a week along with all the activities that go with raising kids.  Now that I'm an empty nester,  I'm lucky to get four or five rounds a month.  Seems I'm spending more time doing stuff with my wife.

Even after I left the golf business I was still managing to play more than 100 rounds per year until 2016, and in 2017 I played a total of 5 rounds.  New job wiped out my play during the week, because of different hours and a location that wasn't close to any courses, and weekend play dried up because my formerly regular group dried up due to most of them having multiple children under the age of 5.

Just signed up for a weekly league again, so I should at least get 9 holes in every week this year hopefully more than that.

Generally no one to play with. My Dad has been my golfing buddy, but he gets out 2-3 times a week due to being retired. Come the weekends, he's usually pretty tired or has plans.  I may start going out on my own after work hours for 9 holes during the week, or start joining others on weekends.

At some points, it has been time.  Now, it is health.  It's hard to say that at age 27, but my body started falling apart at 25 (tendonitis) and before that even, I got a nasty enormous cyst in my wrist that required surgery and sidelined me for the remainder of the year back when I was 23.

I normally take A big chunk of December, January and February off.  I joined a private club in January(Great deal) and have met quite a few good folks that like to play a lot!  I have played 7 rounds already so far this year, when normally I am not at 7 rounds until April.

Now it id pretty much limited to weekend rounds.  Most weekends I play 18 - 27 and practice on one day.  I might play another 18 early on the other day depending upon what the wife has planned.  Luckily she is fine with me playing golf, and she knew the deal when we got together.  I explained that once Daylight Savings time hits I will be at the course a minimum of 3 days a week,  most of the time it is 4.  She has me at home the other days, and we still get to go out to dinner, and go out with our friends on the weekends.
