I have too many nagging injuries that prevent me from playing too often. If I didn't have a bunch of nagging injuries, I would be playing and pounding golf balls way more. Instead, I practice putting and chipping much more because it is less strain on my body.

It's simple. I can't afford too. I don't make enough extra to join a course I really like. I'm not wasting money playing cheaper courses I hate. I'm lucky to play 2 to 3 times a month. Someday when I get ahead maybe I'll join a nicer course.

Often...it's because the thought of a 4.5+ hour round is not appealing to me.  ex. I'm sitting here wanting to play at the moment and checking available tee times in my area.  One place has a lot of ridiculously slow players.  It's a nice course, so I guess people want to take their time and get their moneys worth.  Both of my six hour rounds were played there.

The other place is an executive course.  The price isn't bad, but the reality of it is that I'd really only get nine holes in (when you make the turn, you always hit congestion at the 1st/10th tee box).

So this leads into my typical reasons: I'm not paying ~$30 to play nine holes (quitting and going home at the turn) at the executive course, I'm not paying $40+ (at the nice course) to play three hours on the front nine and then bail, etc. The reality of it is that I'll likely still be sitting here 2+ hours from now, because I'm just tired of rolling the dice and hitting traffic jams on the course.  If I wanted to sit in traffic just for craps and giggles, I'd fire my truck up and go sit out on I-95 south.  I can do that and it won't cost me $30+.

Lack of time due to work and family activities having raised 3 daughters.  I also will try to fly fish a few times if the water conditions and insect activity are promising.  I added weather as a factor since at age 65 I no longer have any interest in playing in the rain or in temperatures below 50F.  Last year I played about 20 rounds and have never played more than 30.  I hope to retire in about 18 months and hope to play 60+ rounds/season if my health allows it.

None of the above.

As below, not in any particular order.

1. Slow play between shots:  If the pace of play is good but it takes a long time to play a course because of difficulty, then I'm ok with the overall time.

2. Course conditioning:  It's unenjoyable to play a golf course with poor turf conditions, and far too many tracks just don't have the necessary budgets anymore.

3. Course layout:  I find too many tracks have multiple ill-conceived holes that make the course "rinky dink", by my definition.

4. Playing Group:  I'm probably too particular about the other players, in an effort to shield myself from "one of those guys" that are of great annoyance to me.

I used to play more prior to retiring from the Army...WHAT!!!, yup, very true, not that I am retired I can only play on Saturdays, maybe practice once a week prior to playing...I work in DC, traffic is crazy and it takes me forever to get home...now that the days are longer I have been able to hit the range for 45 minutes at least once a week...

hmm tough question, let me guess:

8-5 work schedule
Part time Online degree
10 month old new born to family
Wife working on her professional degree full time and comes home only on weekend

yeah... I feel lucky that I can get out at night and practice at the range @ 10pm after my kid goes to sleep...

Once a week seems to keep the game fun and me looking forward to Wednesday, golf day. Sometimes throwing an extra round when needed maybe once a month. My game will never be as good as the 3 to 4 rounds of my youth but it's not as boring either.

I work for UPS and for a call center in the afternoon.   I have been averaging 16 hour days for 18 years.   I fear when I leave this grind I will no longer have the distance to make playing the game enjoyable.  Prior to this I retired from the Army.   I am 58 now.

Play Fri afternoons and 1-2 w/e a month. With work, wife, and a 2yo can't squeeze anymore course or range time. Decided to put a simulator in the garage to replace range time, or lack there of. Best decision ever.

Generally play as much as I want, weather permitting.  Occasionally family and work obligations get in the way, I'm retired (still working part time), but my wife is not, so weekends are normally reserved for her, apart from an early morning range sessions.

I've played since I was a kid so I've been through different stages of playing.  We spent the whole summer playing golf as kids.  I stop playing that much after high school.  I didn't play often in my 20's, just once or twice a month.  When my kids were little I was lucky to play every other Saturday.  Now I play on Saturdays but I've never played again on weekdays.  I'm lucky my wife comes from a golf family and when we started dating I was already an avid golfer.

For me it is a combination of family and time.  I usually play every other weekend while I'm working.  I'm a teacher so during summer I try to play a couple of times a week.

I dont play more because I dont really like playing the same course time after time which would be the case if I joined a club. That is boring to me.   I like to mix it up and usually play 2 different courses a week which require at least an hour or more travel time, just to get there.  Rarely do I play a course more often than once every 4 or 5 weeks except for league play every Thursday.

Biggest issue for me is purely time.  I've got 2 kids at home (5 and 2 yrs old) so getting out for 18 holes is practically impossible these days.  I play in about 1 tournament a month, though, which took some negotiating with the wife.  Aside from that I will typically play Friday afternoons during the summer (usually just 9 holes) and will go play 3-5 holes super early Saturday morning.  I can knock out a few holes before the kids get up and around on Saturday so the wife doesn't mind and I've still got the entire day to hang with them and get stuff done around the house.

Thankfully both kids LOVE golf and like to go play the 3-hole First Tee course with me every so often.  I'm planning on getting my daughter into the junior program when she turns 7 and hopefully that turns into more playing time.

I can't complain too much, though.  I'm playing enough to wet my appetite and hopefully we get more course time as a family in the next few years.

I only have time to play on the occasional weekend, and I don’t have regular playing partners, so when I do go out it’s usually solo.

My goal is to play at least one round of 18 a month. That’s a lot for me.

Havenít really played on course the past few months, but Iíve hit the range up a couple of times. Iíve learned that Iím happy as long as I can get a club in my hand, no matter where it is. Iíve been putting and chipping around at home lately and Iíve been satisfied. Also plan on figuring out a nice backyard setup for pitching and chipping. Iíve fallen in love with the short game and donít plan on turning back lol.

If not for the "18 hole round" specification, I probably would have checked that I play as much as I want. The other factor that I would have checked is crowded conditions.  I play off peak times, usually at the end of daylight.  The course I play is conducive to hopping around and skipping holes to get around traffic.  80% of my play is 9-13, not necessarily consecutively-numbered holes instead of teeing off on one and holing out on 18.  Again, this is a reason to not belong to an upscale course.

I'd play every day if it weren't for:

1. The necessity to go to work Monday - Friday
2. I'm also a full time student (Master's)
3. Winter

I play every Saturday and Sunday spring - fall, but I have to devote time on weeknights for study, so I don't play much during the week.

Already play 5-6 days a week.  I'd play more but there are only 7 days in a week.

The only thing stopping me from playing more is having to work. I have moved courses so that I can play more within reason. The wife is understanding and has no issues with me playing as long as we don't have other plans. This year I plan to play a lot more, hoping for 3-4 times a week.
