I wonder how Tom Watson won the par 3 contest with such an inferior ball.

I doubt the core being a little off has much of anything to do with the balance or playability.

So many questions that probably change nothing for us hacks but , is the core a different weight than the mantle layer ? If not how much would it through off the balance of the mall truly ?  If the ball was cut perfectly in half along would one 1/2 weigh more than the other ? Part of me thinks these are all within tolerance and have such a little effect on anything is just water cooler talk at this point.

Concentric layers are not only important for the balance of the ball, but also, whether it behaves the same - no matter where you hit the ball.

If a layer has a varying thickness, you can be sure, that it also behaves differently - otherwise different layers (and layer thickness) would not work...
I am not saying they don’t but to what degree ? What is acceptable industry standard to where a 10 foot putt is effected to go off line ? Just wondering if this whole thread is OMG let’s blame a ball when it’s just BS concerning any real performance variation

I understand your point.

...but does 10 dimples more, or less make a difference?

...makes a seamless cover a difference?

...makes Graphen a difference?

...makes a 2 layer vs a three layer ball a difference?

...or even a 4 layer vs a 5 layer ball?

It is not that difficult to make a good guess, that probably a +/- 10% difference in layer thickness is not that dramatic...

...but a difference of +/- 50 % has to make a considerable difference - otherwise you could simply use a 1 piece ball.

Earlier it was stated, it would impact putts, so my post was tongue in cheek, as the par three contest relies heavily on putting.

Everybody knows that Tour players get extra-special balls the rest of us aren't allowed to have.

Everything has its drawbacks, as the man said when his mother-in-law died, and they came down upon him for the funeral expenses.

do you think that it true for Mr Watson who at 65 is not going to compete even on the Champions Tour ?  The stock ball probably plays good for his current ability.

Also IMO, the Truvis pattern would make an out of balance ball be more visible to the user when putting as the rotation of the ball is easily picked up.

I am going to take some Truvis I have and roll them on a perfectly flat pool table , if there is an issue it would be easy to see.

I was joking, attempting to poke fun at that old wives tale about Tour pros getting specially juiced equipment and balls.

P.S. The pool table test is a good one and you can take it a step farther (if you like) by improvising a simple ramp of some kind to start the ball rolling. Doesn't need to be an elaborate thing like a Stimpmeter or a Dave Pelz fixture, just a flat bit of something (ruler?) and place the ball top of the ramp then release it. Any "off balance" that doesn't show up in that test is non-existent.

Even an out-of-balance ball will have an equator upon which it is balanced (the whole point of the check-go and/or salt test, and subsequent marking of the ball).  So, to do the pool table test you should find the balance line and then roll the ball with this line perpendicular to the roll line.  That would give the maximum chance of seeing an untrue roll from the ball.  Of course, imo none of this matters as there are so many other variables.  An out-of-balance ball could just as easily help a hack like me by making my mis-read, mis-stroked putt veer back towards the hole.

I did not find any other topics on this so here it goes...

I've been following @golf_ball_guts on instagram and he recently posted photos and video of him slicing a chrome soft truvis in half and discovering that the core was significantly off center.
I wanted to post my own findings after doing some of my own experiments for all the wrxers out there.
I  took one of my own used white/orange truvis chrome soft balls, cut it in half and discovered that it, too, had a significantly off center core. See pic below.

This prompted me to do the epsom salt test on two other chrome soft balls I have (these were found on my local course and did not come from the same package) and found that they were not balanced, ie, the same spot on the golf ball kept rising to the top indicating one side of the ball is lighter than the other.
I tested a ProV1 I have in the epsom salt bath for comparison and found that it was very well balanced.

It's hard for me to imagine that the 3 balls I have and the ball that @golf_ball_guts cut are anomalies so I'm afraid Callaway may have a quality control issue going on here.
I also wonder if other models like Supersoft have this same issue.

I've been marking my balls for balance since I discovered how to do it last year sometime.  I just did about 40 getting ready for the upcoming season.  25 or so B330's were mostly balanced as were the Srixon QStars.  Only the half dozen or so ProV1's exhibited consistent balance issues.

Played the new Truvis for a full 18 holes on Sunday - great feeling ball, received longer than average distance off all clubs and launched and spun predictably and similarly in comparison to other premium balls. It spun well and predictably on the greens, and had the right sound/feel off a stainless steel putter. It showed energy. May be ball of choice in those terms.

Off the putter, it rolled predictably.
