Tried again today to jump on the course and play a quick round before I go in. The guy at the desk even told me it was wide open come on through. Sat behind an older group for 5 and a half hours (along with everyone behind me) while they searched for balls and refused to let guys play through. I'm so sick of these entitled guys who I guess have nothing better to do than hide from their wives at the course all day acting like pace cars. I know there's been a million slow play threads but I just had to rant. I think I'm done with trying to get out there this season I just don't have the time

If the course is open in front...skip the hole. You can always come back and play it later. But if a slow foursome "refuses" to let my twosome through...just give them a wave and move to the next tee. Always works for me.

Did that once in NJ. Playing as a single, stuck behind a foursome in the rain after playing 11 holes before catching them. Waved to them as I passed and got an ear full of cursing for going in front of them. Just seems polite to let a single or twosome play through if you are taking your time.

You got cussed out as a single for skipping ahead of a foursome when they wouldnt let you play through?  What is wrong with people these days

Sadly yes. I still have issues with playing through. Some people are just too serious about their round or something.

Got the evil eye from a player last night ... we played past an abandoned cart on the south edge of the golf course on a par 4. Turned out it's owner had jumped the property fence to look for his ball. He came back over the fence as we were on our way to the green. I guess we were supposed to wait behind said abandoned cart until it's owner came back.

Yes, I don't quite understand that. It only takes a few minutes to allow someone to play through, and to back up an entire course is the height of arrogance.

Earlier this week I was playing in a threesome. We let three singles play through. Kind of a no brainer.

ps: if it's a par 3, and I wave someone up, I always stand next to the pin as that is probably the safest place to be. :-)

We're the same way. If I play by myself I usually play in 2:30-3 hours. When I go out with my brother in law, we get stressed if a single is pushing us, easier to let them play through and go about their business.

Taking your idea about standing next to the pin though!

I live and play most of my golf in North Jersey and have never had a problem playing through as a single with a foursome in front of me.  If language is a problem I also just wave and go to the next hole.  If I was in your position I would have called the clubhouse to get a ranger out to force the issue.  Too bad you ran into such inconsiderate golfers.

I always jump ahead when possible. If it's not possible I take it in early. I'm retired and can play anytime so no need to put up with slow play in my case. Last time I truly played a 5 hour round was in a 6 man scramble. I no longer play in those tournaments.

Last round that I played with the old farts (before I became one) it took 3 1/2 hours to play the front 9.

When I went into the Pro Shop at the turn to ask about whether or not anyone was going to try to get the pace of play picked up, I was told: "That is the pace of play. Deal with it."

Obviously, I didn't deal with it too well, as I never played with the old farts again, and haven't played that course again since...about 8 years now.

I just don't get it, except for the fact that most of these (slow/rude/obnoxious) guys that hold up play are retired, they don't have anything to do all day til dinner, and they really don't want to spend time with their wives, so they just make life miserable for anyone behind them, and don't care.

I think that this is more of a problem as to why golf is seemingly dying, since nobody wants to play behind people like this...anywhere, anytime, any how!

I once played through a foursome on the 17th tee. They told me I was the tenth group they let play through that day and apologized for their slowness as they weren't very good. I told them as long as you get the etiquette right, you're welcome to play here anytime.

The foursome in the original post should be banned from golf for life.
swing is irrelevant, score is everything

Funny, the "old farts" at my club are some of the fastest players. We have a foursome of guys in their late 70's/early 80's that are always in under 3 hours. I've played with them a few times, its a pretty quick pace.

What I don't understand is who set the arbitrary 4 hour round? A foursome should easily be able to play in 3.5 hours. Why doesn't that arbitrary number be set at 3.5 hours?

Kind of a nasty attitude by the pro shop.

I am one of those retired guys...but I move quickly...play ready golf...and am always aware if we are holding someone up behind us, and letting him play through if we are.

Just because I don't have anything else to do, doesn't mean the folks behind me don't. Fortunately the guys I usually play golf with move quickly as well, so it's never really an issue. We are usually the ones wishing the pace would pick up. :-)

All this can be fixed if the course actually enforced a slow play policy. It should be established at check in and enforced by Marshals so that there is no confusion.

It's very rare for a marshal to enforce slow play. In my experience they drive around and avoid eye contact with anyone.

The foursome in front of our twosome this weekend should be videotaped and made a model of showing you can play decent golf quickly. We waited on every shot (so did they) and played in sub 4 hours They were being held up by two separate twosomes in front of them otherwise they could have been done close to 3 hours. They wasted zero time, maximum efficiency, Player A dropped player b off at their ball while player A proceeded to his. No excessive practice swings, J Day visualizations pre shot, or hanging around chatting with each other watching each guy hit. Just step up hit it and half the time they were back in the cart before the ball landed. Helps that it looked like they all hit similar distances and had similar shot shapes, They even had music on which could only be heard by their immediate group. Seriously if you could design a model 4 some for pace these guys would be it.

I am an old fart but play very quickly with my 2 old buddies (I had to train one who used to take too long over the ball until I started calling him ANZAC - explaining that apparently there had to be a minutes silence while he addressed the ball) - that did the trick.

The slowest players at my club are young guys in carts! Why would a 20 year old guy get a cart at a beautiful course? They all think they are in the Masters - way too many practise swings and far too long to read putts. Also waiting for greens to clear on shots they will maybe make maybe once in 50 attempts.

Not playing through situations are SO stupid.

I used to play with a guy originally from Chicago that said you had to be invited to play through.  No, get the F outta the way.

I'm 50.  3-4 years ago playing as a single at muni, I caught a foursome of old guys.  After 2-3 holes, they let me play through, I was walking, they were in carts, so I couldn't just walk up and tell them I was playing through.  Anyway, they finally let me play through.  As I walked with them on the hole, one of the old farts said that a single has no status on the course.  I told him this is the 21st century, things change.  OMG, just let me play through.  I DON'T CARE IF YOU OWN THE COURSE, I PAYED MY FEE, LET ME PLAY.

I play at public courses which are privately owned, not munis, which I agree with you have feckless marshals. But where I play, they will push,  because they are paid employees instead of volunteers looking for free golf.

I've only seen two types of marshals. The ones that drive endless loops and wave at everyone, and the ones that give you crap the second you aren't pushing the group in front of you. Nothing in between.

I would have skipped.  End of drama.

Not easy to do on that course, and I was walking...

Why didn't you skip a hole?  These guys must have been 3-4 holes behind.

Not to say we play fast but we've played through groups on the range.

I was in it last night in a league.   9 holes 3 hours.  I left at the turn.  Wish I could have seen that coming.   Next time i may just forfeit that opponent instead of dealing with the torture.  Hard to tell some players how slowly they play .  I respect my elders and cant critique them without feeling guilty of insulting them.  All I can do is help them find their ball

We lost a ball once and took the 5 minute max searching for it ... ended up playing through ourselves on the back nine. We're that fast.

We played through Jimmy Johns one time.

@Ijrad1995
I wish courses would hire Police to work secondary employment. Not to Marshall, but rather to be on hand when the Marshall's get a hard time for doing their jobs. I have nothing against beginners or high cappers etc.., but slow play to the point of causing a huge log jam is just unacceptable. Slow play is bad for business in an industry that is already sufferings. It's a sad state of affairs when I even have to suggest having Law Enforcement on a golf course.

I feel like courses really need to spell it out to people with a clearly written and posted pace of play policy. Slow play is an issue that needs to be confronted. You may lose some customers, but you'll gain more in the long run when people can count on playing 18 in a reasonable time at your course. We all play badly at times, but that's no excuse to play slowly. Hit it and get it.

I had a bad experience yesterday at one of my favorite local course, Walked on at 1:30pm. Was told it was wide open (rained in the AM and still cloudy). Got through the first 9 in an hour and fifteen minutes. Get to the 10th tee to see 4 groups of middle school aged boys jamming up the course. Parents and apparently coaches were present and walking along. Low and behold, I had run into a school Championship. No mention of it at all from the pro shop. I was pretty pissed off as they weren't the least bit interested in letting me play through. I had to play the front 9 again. The shop should have said something from the get go. I would have started on 10 myself and gotten to play the full 18. Complete BS in my opinion. If courses have those types of things scheduled it should be announced.

I called ahead once drove 20 miles got there and saw a packed parking lot with 3 4smes at 1. I chewed out the GM as he was the idiot who told me they were wide open.  Hasn't happened since then but i did skip the course that summer.
