I've holed 3 bunker shots in the last 2 years and probably around a dozen chips. Mostly really short nice and flat ones that are little more than putts that I happened to hit with a wedge.

I would say I hole out a green side chip once every 6 rounds.    Bunkers, maybe once a year.

Because we have fantastic sand on our course and because I am familiar with the lines out of the greenside bunkers, I will hole out maybe two to three times a year and get probably as many "pick it ups" as well.
On a few of our holes, I would prefer to be the sand rather than chipping because the sand shot tolerates, for me, a harder swing--more of a commitment to the shot than a chip.  It is easier for me to judge distance and line with a sand shot.
I am a poor chipper of the ball--just don't have the feel that I have in the sand.
I'm sure it is another one of those "mental" things that waft thru this damned addiction that we have with golf.

Speaking of hole outs: I have been playing scratch golf for about 25 years. I have exactly one hole-in-one.

But... I have holed out from the fairway from 100+ yards more times than I can count. At least 30, and probably closer to 40.
My longest being 208 yards many years ago.

My old home course was just perfect for my wedge game. The greens were always very receptive, and my wedge play back then was aggressive and very sharp.

God I miss that course. LOL!

Maybe more if I am on the green less often or less if I am hitting more greens or getting the speed wrong. All in all, if you try to make every chip you look at you're bound to make a lot more of them than if you don't
Again how long does that takes (and how far off the green)?

My bunker play is pretty good most of the time. I'm not really sure why. Until last year all I could claim was that I'd usually get it out of the bunker on the first try but it might only make it to the fringe. Then something changed and I now get the ball well out and on narrow greens actually have to worry about hitting it too far or it bouncing across and off. I read somewhere that pros actually like being in bunkers because it's a consistent surface. I'm not sure about that but I don't consider bunkers hazards any more and I'm happy to send a ball toward one. I can almost imagine using them as a way to stop the ball in some situations.

I don't think my technique has changed much:

* Ball off front foot.
* Open stance.
* Open club face.
* Full backswing.
* Aim to hit in front of the ball.
* Full follow through.

I often start the down swing by muttering 'If you don't want to lose golf balls, don't play golf' as a way to encourage myself to follow through. That's actually in reference to an infamous shot I mentioned in another thread when I sent the ball 90+ yards out of a bunker and off into the blue yonder :)

Out of the 10 rounds I've played this year, I have 2 chip ins.  I average around 1 hole out from the bunker per year.  Any time I hole out its usually the ones that are going 20 feet past the hole if it doesnt hit the pin :dntknw:

Practically never.  Very happy with any up and down.

However... two weeks ago had 70yds to elevated green.  Could see top 3rd of pin.  Partner hits nice shot from 80, can't see result obviously.  I hit slightly nicer shot from 70.  Walk up and only one ball on green a few feet away from the pin.  Yep, mine was in the cup.  Too bad it was for PAR.

I've never holed out from a bunker but when I played my old Hogan blades I would hole out a lot chipping from the fringe or just off it with an 8 or 9 iron. The clubs I use now its few and far between hole outs but attempts are down too which is better for me. I once chipped it in 3 times in a 9 hole round with that old 9 iron but these wide sole clubs make it a little trickier.

Rarely hole out from the sand -- maybe once every 60-80 rounds (two years).  Chip in from less than 20 yards fairly often, usually at least 5-6 times a year.  The sand is inconsistent at the two courses I play most often -- some is hard, some fluffy, some hold more moisture, there's a lot of hit and hope.

From sand-never...but our "traps???" are likely amongst the worst in the world.  They are there, they have something that looks a bit like sand in them but very hard packed.
Chip ins...last year 1 per 6 rounds...previous year 1 in 32 rounds.
Hhmmm.  I'm not as good at chipping as I thought.

I usually hole out one bunker shot a year, and I've already spent that one 2017.

My guess is that I hole out once a month from off the green and checking my scorecards that is the case so far in 2017. (4 total)

Probably 3-4 times a year.  I holed out a wedge from off the green the 4th hole I played this year, this after just having open heart surgery 8 weeks or so prior.  I had been practicing my short game a bit and was went out with my buddies  for my first 9 . ...., just kind of bunting it around.  As I walked to the hole they said "well nothing has changed"  LOL.  I have always had a good short game, now my ball striking on the other hand...

I don't... I mean it depends on the situation... If I am a yard off the fringe in the rough/fairway with a putter and like 15 or so feet from the hole.. I expect to get that down in 2.. I don't really count that as a hole out... Now if I am in the same situation but 40 or 50 feet away.. yeah that's a hole out...

Im consistent in my inconsistency with how I track those.  Basically, if I am on the fringe or a hair off the fringe and close enough or left myself with a putt where I expect to 2 putt it, I mark it as a 2 putt.  But if it's really far away and it's a hard 2 putt, I count the first one as a chip.  But that's my personal way of keeping stats.  I do it this way because sometimes I will bail to a certain side intentionally to leave an easier putt... sometimes that results in being on the fringe or just off but that putt, even from a yard into the rough, is easier than being in the middle of the green, on the other side of the hole.   I don't want to penalize my GIR stat when I hit the shot I wanted on the approach and put it where I wanted.  If it takes me 3 to get that one down, then I blame the putter and take 3 putts.

I just went to the Callaway CF16 APEX and those bump and run chips from just off the green with a 9i (or PW, 8i, etc) are so much different than with my previous AP2s.  I have resorted to just using my old vokey PW for these bump and runs as I can control the thin sole a lot easier.

I would say chips -  two to three per year. Bunker shots - one every three years.

I've played for about 25 years and I doubt I've *hit* 50 bunker shots, much less holed them.  Munis around here just don't have bunkers.  I've been a member at 3 different courses and there's not a single bunker on any of them.

Chips and pitches I used to hole fairly regularly.  A few years ago I had 3 on the front-nine (one from about 50 yards).  Still barely broke 40 with two birdies and an eagle.

Lately I'm not guaranteed to even hit the green from 10 yards though.

If I'm around the green I try to make almost all of my chips. I usually lip 2-3 out a round and make 1 every 5 or so. I've hole 3-4 shots out of greenside bunkers. The first one was during the first round I ever played. Who cares if that was for 8 lol...got me addicted to this dam game.

Right there with you. I've done really well this year with chip ins. Been practicing short game much more this year and you know what... PRACTICE WORKS. Had one round with 2 chip ins a few weeks ago. Probably up to 5 or 6 this year, which is a very good pace for me. Out of a bunker is exceedingly rare. I'm pretty bad out of the sand compared to other 3 handicaps, so i avoid them like the plague.

I feel like I hole more bunker shots than chips in general. I do consider bunker play one of my strengths though. This year (15 rounds) I have holed one chip and two bunker shots.

I've holed maybe a couple of bunker shots in my life. I holed one last year in a buddy weekend round that won me some $.

I hope chips and pitches way more frequently. I'd guess that about every 3rd round or so I hole one of these shots. Maybe every 4th round.

All in all, if you try to make every chip you look at you're bound to make a lot more of them than if you don't
Again how long does that takes (and how far off the green)?
I try to make the shots range from 10 yards (severely shortsided) to 45 yards (lots of room but longer distance) and everything in between. I just get aggressive and it takes me an hour and a half or less usually as I go through stretches where I'll make a couple in a row or something like that. I don't think it's fair for people to expect to make chips when they don't practice them.

Tapped one off the pin out of a bunker today. I would say it was the customary "you should come back to play again" shot of the day

The number in the picture is my balls speed
