I'm not opposed to paying extra to play famous courses and have done so to play Sawgrass, Pinehurst #2, Kiawah Island and a few others. received an email from PB for a summer special. 2 nights in the Inn at Spanish Bay, one round at PB and one round at The Links at Spanish Bay for the low price of $2295usd. In Canadian pesos that's a $3100 special at today's exchange rate. Yikes!

One of the nicest hotels in the country, in one of the most expensive parts of the country, on one of the most famous, sought after, golf courses in the country...

I fail to see the surprise here.

Don't think so. Just what I listed.

I've already written off Pebble.....heard from friends who've played it just wasn't all that great.....sure the seaside holes are beautiful, but the 6 hour rounds due to everyone taking 'bucket list' photos, lack of local knowledge making putting silly difficult sans caddie (or even with a caddie).

I'd rather play in Scotland, and even without staying there, don't know if even possible, but green fees were like $600....

Just not that important to me to play it.

I agree. PB is not on my bucket list of courses anyway, for many of the reasons you cite.

Skip staying at Spanish Bay and playing there and your cost with caddie will be closer to $600.   There are lots of cheaper places to stay and better courses than Spanish Bay.

And yes, it's worth $600.

I've played it 15 - 20 times with a caddie and never had a problem reading the greens. The caddies are usually quite good.

I played pebble when I was 16 or 17 (I'm 30 now).  I still remember almost every shot I hit that day.  I remember the cold swing, gross triple on #1.  Draining the long birdie on 5.  Hitting it to a couple inches on #7 for another birdie.  An out of body experience up and down from behind the green on #8.  The blow up on #14 from the fairway bunker.  And ending it on a great sandie par on 18.  It was an incredible day spent my parents (father playing, mother walking).

I've had the incredible fortune of playing many of the great golf courses around the country.  Pebble is right up there at the top of the most memorable and special rounds which I have played.  For me and my father, it was worth every penny to make those memories.

Everyone has their favorite courses that suit their eye, shot making skills, and wallet.

I think your more surprised by the exchange rate between CAD/USD, the CAD has fallen slightly relative to the USD following recent cuts in oil production, but I think it shouldn't drop much more.

My father has played there 2 days in a row before the US Open there, he shot a 130 then a 82 or something, he loves telling the story about the 82

Pebble was never that appealing to me other than a couple of holes. Given the price it won't make my list. Next I need to go to Bandon or Scotland.

I have played it once, it is a great experience.  A caddie is very helpful.  I have described the course this way.
6 of the greatest most memorable golf holes in the world-most famous course would be happy to have 1.
6 great golf holes-Holes that would stand out on most courses.
6 mediocre golf holes-holes that if they weren't at Pebble you probably wouldn't remember them, but they aren't bad holes, you are just staring at 10 million dollar mansions instead of the Pacific.

It;s like the holes start out mediocre, keep getting better till you get through 10, then get worse, and worse till 17 and 18 which are worth looking forward to.   4-10 might be the best stretch of golf in the world.  Walking off the green at 3 you see all the beauty of what is to come and it almost takes your breath away.  You turn around and 17 and 18 are right behind you and you know how you will finish.  The only dull stretch is 11-16 which are good challenging holes, it's just that after what you went through it is kind of a let down.

I think their going rate for a dozen ProV's is $90 a dozen.

Even if I had the money I wouldn't play it. It's the principle of the thing. I am all for the capitalist system, but I find gouging people to be an odious practice. I am sure PB could still make plenty of money with green fees at half the cost. Just because they can get the money doesn't mean they have to. People go to loan sharks, but that doesn't make what the loan sharks do right.

I mean c'mon, $500 for a round of golf?

I totally respect that line of thinking, but it is a once in a lifetime experience for some people.  But what's worse playing $500 for PB or paying $200 for some resort course most people have never heard of on vacation?  I would rather pay for PB, not that I could justify it all the time.....

I get that it's Pebble and yes, it's beautiful...but.....As other said, I would rather go to Scotland/Ireland and play 3 or 4 rounds over there on not well known links courses that 1 round at Pebble.  People are willing to pay it, that's fine, but I'm not one.  Plenty of other iconic courses for far less.

I really couldn't afford it.  But I'll never forget it. I think it's been seven years or something and I can still remember every shot. And that feeling on the first tee that I was actually there.

I can totally understand the OP question about this and see both sides of this.  In 2003 I made the trip out there and experienced it for myself, it was world class, a true once in a lifetime moment!

At the time (in 2003) the going rate was just $350 versus the previous year of $325.  I struggled with that until I came to the conclusion that it will never ever get cheaper and sometimes you need to live life a little.  For me personally I would rather have those great life experiences than the latest TV, car and high value material things etc.   Like many of the posts here by some people they can still remember each shot and how it felt being there, to that I totally concur!

A couple of cool things I witnessed there:

1)  Actually had a guy offer me $600 to have my spot that day since he was travelling through and didn't make a tee time

2)  Hitting your drive on the first tee can be a real pressure cooker, had 60-70 people milling around the first tee ready to go after our group, various people going in and out of the pro shop than stopping to watch.  It can be a little nervy when your not expecting it but when you pull off that drive perfectly you feel on top of the world, one of the best 5 wood shots I ever hit!

3)  So many cool things about the course but when your walking up 18, all the patrons in the restaurant watching you, the people standing around the 18th green taking pics and just knowing that its one of those moments that will stick with you as you gaze out at the Pacific ocean, just epic!

It's not cheap, but from the East Coast, it's on par with any resort destination. I did a hell of a trip for like $3,000 a couple of years ago. With the exchange rate where it is right now, it should be at the top of everyone's list.

i totally understand the OP's feelings on this...

but i believe those who will balk at the steep price are really not the market PB is targeting...

there are some who can easily afford it and some who will even save up for it...

You don't have to stay at the hotel. I plan to play it someday sans hotel. I don't think I'll ever be lying on my death bed thinking "I'm so glad I didn't play Pebble"

I played there many years ago, and agree with many of the assessments written above.  6 great holes, 6 good holes, and 6 mediocre holes.  What I do find telling is that I have never had a desire to spend the money going back to play it again, while there are many other courses where I would willing to do so.
Callaway Epic 9 degrees with Tensei Pro Orange 60 stiff shaft
M1 fwy with Tensei Pro Blue 70 stiff shaft
Ping Anser 20, 23 hybrid with Veylix Rome 988 shafts
Callaway Apex Pro 5-PW irons with Steelfiber 110cw stiff shafts
Yururi Tataki 50.5, 56.5, and 60.5 with Accra Tour 105 shafts soft-stepped X2

Played in Jan. 2015 when they didn't require you to stay at the resort. Took a cart and my wife rode for 45$..I think.  Probably would never have played if it wasn't for the hotel exemption. I'd gladly go back and play it again...the key is to stay in the area for a few days and really soak up the Monterey Peninsula. Pebble will be the icing on the cake of a great vacation

IMO it's more about the experience. This isn't your weekly local course. For most, this is a once in a lifetime experience.

Myself, I'd gladly spend the $500 for PB, and then drop the extra $375 to play Spyglass Hill.

Crazy? Maybe, but again, it's a once in a lifetime experience. Hard to out a price on that. IMO it's more than "just a round of golf."
