I have been playing AP2s since they came out in 2008 and have been playing the 712s since they came out.  I got the bug to get a new set this year and the 716s do not really interest me, however the JPX 900 Forged do.  Looking to see if anyone on here made the switch from AP2s to the JPX 900 Forged.  I'm thinking of going 4-GW in the 900s so I would have to change my wedge set up as well.  If you made the switch, how have the 900s performed versus your AP2s regarding distance, feel, and forgiveness?  The reviews on this site are off the charts for the 900s.  I think the thread is well over 20 pages on them now.  Just wanted to see how many AP2 players made the switch and why,

I have a fitting for the 900s this week both on a LM and outdoors.

Not that much help but i just got these coming form the Cally Apex and love them so far after a couple ranges sessions and 1 round.  Same distance but much better feel.

the JPX forged is a great club. I can't tell you in comparison to the AP2 but I was hitting it this past week with a Nippon 105 t and it felt great, great distance. Good numbers clean contact

I switched from 714 AP2 to 900 Forged (5-7)Tour (8-PW) combo.  So much better.  I loved them so much I also bought a full-set of 900 Forged!  My son who has been in 714 and now 716 AP2 demoed 900 Forged and within 10-12 shots fell in love with them and we have a set on order for him.

So how are the Forged better than AP2?  Well much softer feel, significantly more forgiving especially 5-7 irons, slightly lower ball flight but still no problem stopping balls on the green and probably 1/2 to 3/4 club longer.  I also had no issues hitting some fades and knock-downs with them.  Just as easy as the AP2.

I am flipping between gaming the Forged/Tour and the Forged sets right now.  I think I just prefer the combo set but both are straight up awesome.  The look and feel of the Tour 9 and PW beat the Forged handily.  8 and 7 I could go either Tour of Forged.  Lower than 7 it's Forged every day.

FYI - I have Nippon Modus 105x in my 900 sets.  Great shaft!

Thanks for the replies! Really excited about the fitting this week and looking forward to putting the JPX 900 Forged into play.

I am leaning towards KBS C-Taper Lite, PX LZ, or KBS Tour shafts

Good luck with your fitting.  I have the same 712s and have been looking to make a switch.  I hit the 900 Forged recently and they are really nice.  My one concern is how strong the lofts are compared to the 712s.  I would need to demo an entire set to make sure I wouldn't have to rework my wedge setup.

I am am coming from Ping Anser Forged but here are my thoughts...

I got fit for a set over the weekend and played with a 6 iron in the bag on Saturday. On the LM the numbers were very impressive. Hitting the range balls the flight was very good. The feel was amazing. The look is amazing. Basically nothing not to like and my swing was not 100% this weekend.

However hitting some balls on the course with my Pro V1x the JPX 900 Forged really shinned. Out of rough the thing was amazing. Through very thick wet grass the head plowed through with little problem at all and led to a great strike. Down wind and my ball landed on the green and STOPPED. On a Par 3 same result. Same with out of the fairway. Consistent strike and divot size. The one thing I didn't try was to work the ball (I'm primarily a straight ball hitter) one the course-- I did on the range and it seemed perfectly receptive but the results were not greatly mostly because of the range balls I was hitting. I have no doubt a real golf ball will react exactly how you'd want it too off the face.

Overall: The looks of the club at address are amazing. Chunky enough to give me the confidence I wanted but very appealing to my eye. The feel was fantastic. Center hits were absolute butter but a miss hit will give you the feed back you'd want in a club like this.

Shafts: I hit the C Taper (S), C Taper lite (S), PX 6.5, and the KBS tour (S).  All +1/2"

The C Taper is what I'm currently gaming and what I used to demo the club on the course. Results were a *slightly* more penetrating ball flight.
The C Taper lite and PX 6.5 were very similar. Both Produced great feel and a ball flight that was ever so much higher than the C taper.
The KBS tour was the lightest of the shafts so the ball flight it produced was much higher but still had great feel. My only worry with this particular shaft would be flying into the wind.

I ended up ordering 5-GW with the C Taper S+ +1" (exact same shaft I'm currently gaming--The difference between it and anything thing else wasnt enough (basically nonexistent) for me to want to have to change the shafts in my other two wedges. I've been playing Ping Irons for something like 12 years now. I liked the JPX 900 enough to change with no worries. Though I don't yet have them and obviously haven't played with them yet... I have absolutely no worries about how they will perform when I finally get them.

Hope this helps!

I went with JPX 900 Forged 4-GW with PX LZ 6.0 shafts.  All I can say is that the 4-7 irons are fantastic!  They are more forgiving, longer, and easier to flight the ball than my previous AP2s.  I am having some difficulty getting adjusted to the 8-GW.  I am not hitting them as pure or as solid.  Right now I think it is more of the indian than the arrow but they do play a tad different.

Combined with the PX LZ shafts, these irons are a perfect match for me.  I would highly recommend the 900 Forged to anyone looking for a solid players club that is also forgiving.  The mid and long irons may be the best in the business.

Yeah - I definitely think the major difference is in the long-mid irons.  They are amazing and I agree I have hit nothing better up to say 7 iron.  The 9 and PW Forged while very good - I think the Tour model is much better feel, better spin and really no difference in forgiveness. YMMV.

I thought about ordering the PW and GW in the Tour but unfortunately the Tour doesn't come in a GW... Didn't make any sense to have the PW tour and the GW forged so I kept them both forged.

I have never played a GW that came with a set but I custom ordered one as the 900 forged set I purchased didn't have one with it.  I love the GW on this set.  It is very effective on tight lies around green as the sole has more bounce than my T7 wedges.  Also, on shots 140 yards and in this GW is much easier to hit and longer than a comparable 50 degree T7 wedge.  Been playing my 900 forged for a couple months and I can't find anything to complain about other than my inconsistent swing.  I know some on this site have complained about the looks(satin) of this set but I have never had so many compliments on a set of irons.  I felt my 54's were a great looking set of irons yet they never garnered a fraction of the attention this set of 900's do.  Mizuno absolutely knocked it out of the park with these.

I also haven't played a gap wedge that came with the irons. The last couple of seasons I've started using my gap wedge more and more from further out so I wanted to have it match my set. But I'm quite glad to know that they work well from around the greens as I do use it quite a bit there. I personally love the finish. No glare and I can see them not showing scratches and dings quite as badly.

The one down fall of the MP line is that they are so soft they easily get dinged up and bag chatter galore on them.

Also a complaint I had with my Ansers.... I tried to keep a set of head covers on them but after about a month of the irritation of taking them off and putting them on and them falling off I dumped them.

All forged irons will mark up.  I'd rate the 900F better than average.

Getting fitted tomorrow and these are the clubs I hope to be match up with.
