We had our member-guest this past weekend. The tournament is broken into 5 flights of six teams each and you play nine hole matches against each team in your flight. The winner of each flight then goes to a four hole shoot-out where one team is eliminated on each hole until there is a Champion.
The nine hole matches are for points, each hole is worth a point and the match is worth a point. Since the point totals matter, you play the match to conclusion even if you would normally be done in traditional match play.

My partner and I played well, and through 4 matches we were tied for the lead in our flight. It just so happened that we would be playing the team we were tied with in our final match. My partner and I continued our good play and we were 1-under through 9 holes....and lost 7-3. Our opponents went 5-under over nine holes. They birdied the first three to go up 3-0 (we were even par at that point), we eked out 1.5 points over the next two, and then they proceeded to birdie three more in a row. We managed a meaningless win on the last hole.

It was pretty impressive and as the title says, sometimes all you can do is smile and shake their hands at the end of the match.

So nice to hear. Anymore it's almost automatic that if someone shoots a good score ina tournament they're either sandbaggers or they cheated.

Yea, I hate the guys that accuse people of that.  If you have to convince yourself that someone cheated to feel better about losing, then you've got a problem haha.  It's golf, you aren't going to win every time.  It takes courage to not be discouraged and get back out there the next day.

No strokes were involved and we were in the first flight.  Funny thing is, they both individually shot either even or 1-over.  One guy had three bogey to go with three birdies, the other had a couple of bogeys and a double to go with three birdies.  They just managed to avoid having both do it on the same hole except for one.

Also, I know the member well and play with him a lot.  This is exactly his game.  He's the type of guy who will have four birdies and still shoot 78 because he'll have one or two swings a round where the ball goes sideways.

My partner and I are both the opposite.  I will shoot a mid-70's score with one birdie and a bunch of bogeys, but rarely have a blowup hole.  Slow and steady, that's me.

And that's how it usually seems ends in those best ball formats (our Member-Guest is the same format), the erratic teams that can make a lot of birdies coupled with some "others" winning out over the 1 birdie, 2-3 bogie type player.

If the erratic guys mesh well (like your opponents did) they're darn near impossible to beat.

I hate losing as much as the next guy but it is tough to be angry when you just get beat.  The best are the rounds where you just battle it out matching good shot for good shot.  If you get beat, take off your hat, shake hands and enjoy what you have just been a part of.

1st AZ WRX Match Play event. I drew a tough match we battled it out, par or better won every hole no one was giving things away. We get to like hole 14 my competitor looks at the card says cr@p we're all square then proceeds to birdie the next 2 holes and closed me out on 16 ends up shooting even par on a course that got a few votes in the hardest course ever played thread. I ended up playing aggressive the last couple just for the skins game ended up with 75 or 76 would have beat every other player in the field that day. All you can do is say well played and hope they dont remind you about it for years to come.......................... @wcb31

I'd rather lose to someone who lights it up then if we both limp to the 18th hole.

Yeah, I don't like losing where I played bad and lost, but if I played well and the other guy just played better: that's just the way it goes sometimes.  What made me pretty happy was that my partner and I stayed focused on the match even though we went three down through 3 and fought back to get to within shouting distance with 4 holes to play.  It would have been pretty easy to just fold after watching our opponents make 3 birdies to open the match, but we hit back and thought we still had a chance.  But then they went birdie-birdie-birdie again and broke our backs.

Bingo....

You didn't lose OP. The other team quite literally just won it. You can walk away with your heads held high knowing you gave them a battle and if they hadn't shot the lights out the end results would have been different.

Play with this guy whoi takes more risk than me
We are both long off the fairway same distance but he's blocked partial tree and still manage to get in the green and eagle out on a par 5.  Nothing I could do but say excellent play

Had a match in men's league last year and the guy I played shot a 33 (we only play 9 holes)
He had 9 putts total. No matter where he was on the green it just went in

Just gotta shake your head and laugh. Absolutely nothing I could have done that night would have made any difference to the result. Was happy for him as he's one of the good guys.
